Faster commenting

I know the comment button gets slow sometimes, so I made it faster: now you can comment on a post and it should show up very fast. Try it on this post :)

2) I am experiencing problems with numbers of comments and new comments, on the active threads page. Have to refresh many times. My comments is seen as new comment and i have to revisit the page to make it disappear.
3) Sometimes I am being logged out. I refresh and I am in again.

Problem with cookies or the zend module?

Wait... from the symptoms, i imagine what you're doing to make it faster. I wouldn't do it.

I wonder why criticts of PBH were wondering why Peter would not use some of the other more widely used tools to create community forums. PBH is working great.

Thanks for your job.

Poor but snappy

robi666 says on Oct 12, 2007, 09:24:

No, i do not mean a "push" technique. I mean:
1 - you are on the page
2 - someone post
3 - you post
4 - you see your post being appended at the end, but the other's one?

Wait, I'll try it using two computers...

"I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present."

Peter (Moderator) says on Oct 12, 2007, 09:25:

Ah, no, it doesn't do that either. If you're on the page, you won't see other people's new comments since you arrived on that page. Until you refresh the page. Leaving a comment doesn't do it. Why, are you having problems with that situation?

Poor but snappy

Peter (Moderator) says on Oct 12, 2007, 09:26:

I could probably make it do that if I had another 4 hours to program it, but there are other more important things to tend to :)

Well, tried it...
yes, it is a BIG problem, for what I think.
I use to have many page folders open, with the thread I am interested in.
You stay on a page and comment... I see my new comment and I miss all the comment since I came in but I do see my new comment. If i see my new comment, i just think that the page is up to time...
Quite strange don't you think?
When i saw it, i knew what you were doing and the danger of it... ;-) sorry (to be a pain in the ass) Peter I was into this business for so many years...

I liked the old way better anyway!

Robi: I'll see if I can fix it. I see the problem with your workflow. I think there's an easy way actually.

As for the login problem, I'm getting it too, I'm looking into it.

Poor but snappy

robi666 says on Oct 12, 2007, 10:50:

Ok, more for Peter.

When someone makes a new comment, you post the comment to the server, wait for a return code, and then append the comment at the end of the page "client side".

Now, you give the illusional idea that it is faster (because you do not force it to refresh), but the page is not actually up to date, and one has to refresh it anyway to see the comments that have been made before the last.

More and worse, one can think that he's seeing an up to date page and it is not!

Now, what's the difference with the old way to do it?
Did I explain myself?

"I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present."

Peter (Moderator) says on Oct 12, 2007, 10:53:

Yep I understand robi :) I'll try to make it so it shows *all* the latest comments, also the ones made in the meantime. Good point :)

Robert Jorge says on Oct 12, 2007, 11:13:

I get logged off about 30% of the time now when I click on the new comments number for each thread. I then have to go back to the sign in page, click on sign in, and I am automatically logged back in without me having to put my handle or password in. What's up?
