or patacones on the coast Kernow is right-on the the greasy-spoon kiosks will be your most affordable source of fat-drenched fast-food. Have you tried Wimpy or other local "fast-food" chains?

PS as for "good" Pizza, I know many North Americans who will turn their nose up at Pizza in Italy, even Naples. Go figure.

How long have you been out of Colombia? My wife must know every commercial jingle ever produced in Colombia. In fact she sings all the time.

Why are Colombians (Gomez excepted) so happy all the time?

Don´t agree. In Medellin the Empanadas are good and not expensive. Arepas de Choclo con Queso are excellent.

Pizza in Colombia is not great, I think it´s the cheese they use.

Natalia, he said he wanted "cheap" fast food, El Corral is hardly cheap, and Wimpy sucks ass.

Just go for the cheap neighborhood fast food places. I've seen plenty of places where you can get a burger, fries and coke for 3 milqui - 4 mil.

Mr. Hollywood says on Mar 17, 2005, 07:11:

Presto "good fast food" is a bit of an oxymoron, but Presto is quite cheap and is your basic burger and fries joint. El Corral is $10,000 for a "combo" with a big hamburger, fries and a drink, which isn't hugely expensive to a foreigner, especially one spending British Sterling.

Since when was pizza "fast food"?

Lauthra says on Mar 17, 2005, 09:03:

oh yeah... El Corral is quite expensive indeed, but so it's Presto Mr. Hollywood and half as nice!
William is right, street vendors is the best option, if you don't mind having dubious meat...

Easter Weekend The Cartagena McDonalds in Boca Grande is the place to see and be seen. Don't miss it,, great ice cream bar. Crispys is the KFC of Colombia.

Forget pizza,, for some reason they all serve small thin pineapple pizzas. Hummm, generally you can forget fast food in general, at least as it is known in the US. If there is a Hooters in Colombia it must be a tax write off used by the executives as an excuse to visit.

why is it called Comidas rapidos Comidas Rapidos??

It takes half the time to get a full Almuerzo than it does to get a slice of pizza and my local fast food joint.

Who said anything about dubious meat??? Now, you're just putting words in my mouth.
I've never gotten sick after eating anything from the street. However, I have gotten sick after eating in some pretty respectable restaurants. So using my logic, street food is safer.
My favorite is the little arepa, chicharron, patacon, morcilla combo that they sell downtown. Also, you just can't beat the arepas rellenas, covered with butter, stuffed with meat and cheese and cooked over the bicycle grill. Mmmm...
Anyway, I trust street food more cause I can see them preparing it right there. If you go to a restaurant, who knows what they're doing in the kitchen, hidden from all prying eyes.

And there's just something about standing around the bike grill with 10 other people eating arepas on a cold Bogota night. It's a community thing, bonding with fellow street food lovers.

Lauthra says on Mar 17, 2005, 18:54:

Not dubious? I must admit I have no problem eating from the street vendors, but when they flog burgers with a drink for a 1.000... does not compute :P

Another one I thought of (it's not related to Colombia, however):

In a fancy restaurant they call it "polenta", in every good southern home they're called "cheese grits". And they always seem to be a little burnt. Who wants to eat burnt cheese grits?

Tinto (Moderator) says on Mar 18, 2005, 15:36:

You will, when you see Juliette Binoche make polenta in the film "Horseman on a Roof" ;-)

Come to think of it, the corn-based polenta and all the different things people put on it, reminds me of an arepa.

i agree that the street vendors--when you know them--are... great. however, they are hardly a replacement for a fine restaurant. let's be honest withourselves.

i like the grits from the streets as much as the next guy/gal. but better than haute cuisine...not today my friends, and not tomorrow.

a burger at presto or corral is not filet mignon at any of the fine restaurants in poblado or las palmas. and chuzos in the street can be beat. trust me.

this is a tale i related on another thread. a friend of mine and i were nursing an early morning hangover about 3:00 a.m. in rio negro. maurizio said why don't we eat a burger from one of the street guys. great...so we walked up the little alley where they were all cooking away in their self alluminated carts.

we ordered a couple of burgers and some minutes later there they were. we each took it and i took a bite. and taken aback, i just stood there with this dreck in my mouth while i watched maurizio bite into his. moments later, he, too, stood there unable to swallow this wretched grool.

i looked down and saw some skinny, starving bitch (dog) hanging around the food stands and straight away i gave her my burger. she came up nudged it with her nose, looked it over and walked off.

ummmm

you probably gave that starving bitch of a dog the outer part of your burger. Dont you know dogs only eat the inner part? ;) ;) ;)

my short term experiences on food
Hmmmmm...well I haven`t been here that long (this weird keyboard is freaking me out) and from what I get about the food....

the comidas rapidas...are ok but it seems like the locals I was with didn`t like to eat at them...and they said they rarely eat at the street vendors (if ever). We ate at some restaurant tonight it was funny, a couple of guys came to us, obviously high on coke (I can tell the signs) asking for a colombian potato and got shooed away from us by security at this outside restaurant with tables. The set meals seem good, but are very cheap, nothing tasty really they said. Just to eat, ya know.

Find that there are many places to spend money here (5-10 dollars a drink in la zona rosa? come on!!!) but its hard to make a lot of money.

'obviously high on coke (I can tell the signs)'....thats exactly the reason why I wouldnt allow the sales of Coke or Pepsy anyway. Its not healthy. Too much sugar, caffeine....
