FARC wants to meet Daniel Ortega to talk about "war and peace" (is anyone surprised?)

He's pretty much the only leader who explicitly and openly sympathizes with FARC's struggle in the region by now.

Even Chavez and Correa have publicly criticized FARC and rejected the armed struggle, but Ortega...honestly, whatever one may say about Chavez at his worst, he's almost looking like a saint compared to Ortega's recent outbursts.

No, the war in Colombia is not "black and white", but neither is it "white and black", to provide a subtle hint.

FARC's communique is supposedly dated June 26, btw.

Las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) expresaron al presidente de Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, su deseo de reunirse personalmente con él, o con un delegado suyo, para hablar sobre "asuntos de la guerra y de la paz" colombiana.

A través de una misiva, fechada el 26 de 2008, la guerrilla de las FARC agradecen la posición asumida por el presidente nicaragüense "en momentos tan difíciles para nuestra organización como los asesinatos de Raúl e Iván Ríos, y la muerte de nuestro Comandante en Jefe, Manuel Marulanda Vélez".

Además, en la carta, dirigida al mandatario nicaragüense, halagan la decisión del Gobierno de Nicaragua de conceder asilo político a las guerrilleras Susana y Diana, sobrevivientes del ataque que el ejército colombiano perpetró, el pasado 1 de marzo, sobre territorio ecuatoriano.

"Muy valiente su decisión de concederles asilo político a las guerrilleras Susana y Diana, sobrevivientes del ataque artero de Bogotá y Washington al campamento transitorio de Raúl, cuando la hipócrita política antiterrorista del imperio intenta chantajear el decoro de gobiernos independientes y satanizar las luchas de los pueblos", dice el texto.

En la carta las FARC reiteran que su "alzamiento armado está tutelado por el derecho universal y plenamente justificado como respuesta legítima a la violencia del Estado", al que acusan de desatar, en la década de los 50, el conflicto armado colombiano.

"Las FARC surgidas del ataque militar a Marquetalia en 1964 son una respuesta popular legítima a todas las violencias del Estado. Mientras se mantengan las causas políticas, económicas y sociales que la generaron, la lucha armada nunca perderá vigencia. Nos alzamos en armas por la paz con justicia social, y triunfaremos. Habrá nuevo poder, Nueva Colombia, Patria Grande y Socialismo", expresan.

Asimismo, ratifican su disposición para realizar el acuerdo humanitario, que permita alcanzar la paz en Colombia, pese a que -aseguran- el presidente �?lvaro Uribe "no está programado por los gringos ni para el canje ni para la paz".

"Sólo un nuevo gobierno, verdaderamente democrático, surgido de un Gran Acuerdo Nacional, podría retomar el camino de la búsqueda de una solución política al conflicto social y armado que vive Colombia", concluyen.

Hacemos extensivo este sentimiento a la militancia revolucionaria del Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional y al pueblo heroico del comandante Carlos Fonseca Amador.

En estos tiempos en que se pretende relegar a planos intranscendentes este principio distintivo de los revolucionarios, hemos sentido con fuerza su cercanía y voz de aliento. Gracias Comandante Daniel por su compañía en momentos tan difíciles para nuestra organización como los asesinatos de Raúl e Iván Ríos, y la muerte de nuestro Comandante en Jefe, Manuel Marulanda Vélez, ante quien hemos jurado vencer, y venceremos.

Muy valiente su decisión de concederles asilo político a las guerrilleras Susana y Diana, sobrevivientes del ataque artero de Bogotá y Washington al campamento transitorio de Raúl, cuando la hipócrita política antiterrorista del imperio intenta chantajear el decoro de gobiernos independientes y satanizar las luchas de los pueblos.

Nuestro alzamiento armado está tutelado por el derecho universal y plenamente justificado como respuesta legítima a la violencia del Estado. El Libertador Simón Bolívar nos inculcó que "la insurrección se anuncia con el espíritu de paz, se resiste contra el despotismo porque éste destruye la paz, y no toma las armas sino para obligar a sus enemigos a la paz". Y también nos dice que "aun cuando sean alarmantes las consecuencias de la resistencia al poder, no es menos cierto que existe en la naturaleza del hombre social un derecho inalienable que legitima la insurrección".

Bien lo saben nuestros hermanos sandinistas que enfrentaron la barbarie de Somoza, que los revolucionarios no escogemos la forma de lucha, sino que ésta la impone el enemigo. El Estado colombiano es hijo de Santander, el falso héroe nacional que confabulado con la Secretaría de Estado de los Estados Unidos mató a Bolívar y destruyó su proyecto de conformación en este hemisferio de una gran nación de repúblicas. De Santander desciende el actual régimen de las oligarquías que masacró a más de 1500 trabajadores bananeros en 1928 en defensa de los intereses económicos de la United Fruit Company. Esta oligarquía liberal conservadora desató en la década del 50 la violencia partidista que asoló campos y ciudades produciendo la muerte de 300 mil colombianos; aniquiló toda una generación de revolucionarios barriendo a tiros a la Unión Patriótica, movimiento político alternativo al que le fueron asesinados cerca de 5 mil de sus dirigentes y militantes en los años 80; ha disparado sistemáticamente contra dirigentes sindicales y populares, y ha adoptado el paramilitarismo como estrategia contrainsurgente del Estado ejecutando espantosas masacres de ciudadanos y provocando mediante el terror el desplazamiento forzoso de más de 4 millones de colombianos.

Las FARC surgidas del ataque militar a Marquetalia en 1964 son una respuesta popular legítima a todas las violencias del Estado. Mientras se mantengan las causas políticas, económicas y sociales que la generaron, la lucha armada nunca perderá vigencia. Nos alzamos en armas por la paz con justicia social, y triunfaremos. Habrá nuevo poder, Nueva Colombia, Patria Grande y Socialismo.

Siempre entendimos la concreción del acuerdo de canje humanitario como un paso inicial hacia la generación de un ambiente propicio para hablar de paz, pero se ha demostrado hasta la saciedad que Uribe no está programado por los gringos ni para el canje ni para la paz. Sólo un nuevo gobierno, verdaderamente democrático, surgido de un Gran Acuerdo Nacional, podría retomar el camino de la búsqueda de una solución política al conflicto social y armado que vive Colombia.

Sobre estos asuntos de la guerra y de la paz desearíamos hablar personalmente con usted, o su delegado.

The only thing that surprises me is that our current administration in Washington, as of today, is STILL sending Ortega's Nicaragua MILLIONS in Aid. Cano has made it very clear in this communique that the farc does not want peace. He claims that they will only negotiate with a "democratic government" brought about by some "Grand National Accord", whatever the hell that means. Well, for better or worse, Colombia does have a democratically elected government which represents the people and is the legitimate authority for the country. In any case, they have shown in the past that their negotiations are nothing but a cynical farce. If the farc don't want peace, then the only option is to exterminate them completely and without mercy.
