FARC Conversations with locals

So what's the story with bringing this up for conversation with local people, bad idea or an interesting topic? I suppose not just the FARC but other groups aswell...

For what it´s worth, my own experience of this is it depends who you talk to. Most Colombians I´ve soken to about FARC detest them with a vengeance. Some can see their arguments but disagree with their tactics. ALL have very, very strong opinions.
But it´s okay to mention FARC and politics. Just be ready for a heated discussion. Oh, and don´t offer your own views unless they´re the same as who you´re talking to.

Also depends on where you are. And what your own views are.

It's really easy to step in dog shit and really hard to clean it off your foot once you've done that.

You 'll have to remember that many Colombian families have suffered much and have lost beloved family members due to FARC terrorist tactics and kidnappings. It's not an easy subject to discuss, but can be done, if you approach it with delicacy and consideration.

I have discussed the FARCs and the other groups with some fairly conservative people in Colombia without getting into trouble, but as the previous posters have already stated it depends on with whom and what your ideas are too. I've experienced that in academic circles and with people with higher education the topic can be approached without getting your head chewed off.
