Extracting the blood from the umbilical cord and freezing to save for later?

Has anyone ever used the services of this company? Does it seem like a worthwhile thing to spend 5 millon pesos on?

For some reason I can see "Banco de Células de Colombia" getting involved in some black market for stem cells.

Yes yes and yes...for your baby's health it's definitely worth it. If by any turn of luck he or she might need a bone marrow or stem cell transplant later in life, they can obtain it from the sample of the baby's umbilical cord. And keep in mind, with the speed of scientific development nowadays, they will find cure to most cancerous and infectious diseases by studying these stem cells. It's not so much money if you think of all the potential benefits it can bring. Good luck!

Bisk......... Not just private. There are public banks for cord blood, and some good stories of it's usefullness in certain circumstances. Having it stored privately is considered useless by all the experts in the field. There are a few recent articles in the New York Times and in the New England Medical Journal on the whole subject. There are also Internet forums dedicated to the topic. Interestingly, on these forums, there is a vicious reaction to people who want to bank their offspring's cord blood privately. Some of the back and forth, would remind you of a good battle on PBH.

Anyway, o/p....... If you are interested, I can PM you some links to useful info. Right now I'm sitting on a bar stool in sunny south California........, so, give me a lite time to get back to you.

there shouldn't be any 'extra' blood in the cord. it should all be worked down the cord and into the child at birth.

oh, have any of you eaten placenta stew? a bit odd, to say the least, but it's the only meat you'll ever eat that some one is born for and didn't have to die for. eaten it twice.

there's no foot race on to cut the umbillcal cord. and both books that deal seriously with natural childbirth...'the birth book'and 'special delivery' both state that the blood is to be worked down the cord and into the child. i've been the delivering party at three natural births and have a good idea of the sequence of events in childbirth. two of the children were mine and one was that of a tenant. i should point out that pretty much, attendants do precious little....the mother does it all. there's no cheering for the bystanders. rather awe at the divine design and the mother's incredible ability to address and deal with the discomfort and pain.

the recipes for placenta stew are published. i do admit that the 'wierdness' of eating it (for lack of a better word) interferred with my ability to enjoy it. nuff said.
