Everyone recomends finding a good attorney, but.............HOW???????????

Hi I have had an attorney here in Cartagena who was recomended by a american woman living here with a succesful business for about 25 years. He speeks english and has a good reputation. But I have never paid any of the taxes described here for four years. . (the one for property over 80 million or so) I do of course pay my property taxes. He never has told me anything about them. Now I am trying to get things straigtened out here in Cartagena and also trying to buy a house in Medellin. Anybody have recomendations of a good attorney AND an accountant that THEY have used and have had good results?? One in Medellin would be most helpful. Best if they speak english but not necessary. My spanish is alright. Thanks in advance.

Are you American? If so, another route is to contact citizen services at your embassy... they have a list of Colombian attorneys that they will provide you.

They will be unwilling to recommend one over the other, or be involved in any way. However, they do rift attorney's from the list who are shown to give poor service... so there is an incentive for those participating attorneys to be honest and competent.

Hola!

I got 3 names at the local bar association in USA when I was looking for an attorney here. The bar association referral meant our initial consultation was $20, instead of $220 an hour. I visited 3, but one was unavailable. I based my judgment on which of the two impressed me most with their knowledge.

I would find a similar association where you need your attorney and try 2 or 3!
