having read through this excellent website and especially the colombia safety guide there was a section of not putting yourself in certain bad situations that may lead to you being robbed or worse.....dont give papaya.
i have also learnt quite a lot of other colloquisms from my study of castellano/collaquiel spanish here in london and my summer in mexico last year :
1) me pone como un tomate - i feel/look like a tomato when you are feeling nervous/embarassed.
2) tengo mala leche - i have bad milk when you feel uneasy about something or a situation you are in
3) me senti como un cocodrilo en fabrica de carteras - i feel like a crocodile in a wallet factory for when you are frightened.
4) me pone como una sopa - when you arrive home or to meet someone and you are soaking wet, maybe you have experienced - que tiempo de perros -what basd weather
5) ser el ombligo del mundo - someone who thinks they are the centre of the world or bellybutton of the world.
6) estas en la luna - are you en the moon ? when you think someone is loco/tonto or chiflado - crazy for a moment.
7) me sento como pez en el agua - i feel like a fish in water ie. you feel very contented or at home.
what i want to know from PBH members is anyone other similar expressions that people have come across with the meanings too if you have them. im particularly interested in ones revolving around the food type or animal theme.
mucho gracias todos

Juanes says on Aug 18, 2006, 06:37: los siento para mi gramatica espanol - a veces thanks kat for providing the minor alterations. i was just recalling them from one of spanish lessons in london some 4 weeks ago and i remember most of it. there are also a lot of others which are common still in both spain and latin america. it is right about llegue como una sopa cos its when you arrive late somewhere having suffered a tormenta and you are soaking wet. im fom london by the way but have been learning the old spanish for 4 years and had 3-4 intensive last year in mexico and cuba where i managed to pick up a hell of a lot of street slang con los hermanitos y cuates en las calles. http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Juanes/ |
