For what its worth... My experience is that many Colombian universities advertise such programs, and they'd love to give them.

But when it comes down to the wire... they just don't have enough applicants to support even one class.

So before I put my faith in the Javeriana at Cali, I'd want to ask some very specific questions about the odds of it REALLY happening.

Javierana I took the beginning course four years ago. We had only 7 people in the class, but the program is very good, Unfortunately I had to return to the states and did not finish, but I would like to see a simular program here in Cartagena.

it is excellent but expensive...I had a class with just 2 others, heard of that happening often. But can be as many as 8. Excellent teachers in every class from what I could tell.

They have a website with dates etc.

I have not heard of them cancelling a class for lack of students, although i'm sure it happens. Less likely at La Jav than other schools I would say.

Universidad Javeriana .. one of the best in Colombia-wife graduated from Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. Know people who have taken the course abd said it was excellent but expensive. You might also check Centro Colombo Americano

considering USC

There are also Spanish for foreigners programs at Universidad Santiago de Cali:

SPANISH FOR FOREIGNERS

The Santiago University of Cali offers to the interchange students a complete program of direction, that centralizes aspects like: knowledge and location of the university, the country and the city. Same Asi, becomes jumbled and instructs the interchange student that does not dominate the Spanish language in intensive courses to reinforce the same one

THE INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGES

The Institute of Languages was founded in July of 1995. It is celebrating its tenth year anniversary this year, offering English, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish for Foreigners courses.

The Spanish for Foreigners courses are offered in the regular resident program, by semesters, January to May and July to November. There are intensive Spanish for Foreigners courses in July, August, and September, for those students who are visiting our city on vacation. We are currently developing a virtual Spanish for Foreigners course intended to start in the year 2006. This course has three modules focussed on developing basic oral and written skills, supported by the following principles:

Learners learn the language through using it to communicate.
Authentic and meaningful communication should be the goal of all course activities.
Fluency is an important dimension of communication.
Communication involves the integration of different languages skills.
Learning is a process of creative construction and involves trial and error.

For further information, you may contact us at inidioma at usc.edu.co, or at mmolano at usc.edu.co

2. Application for other courses in general(for foreigners):

Yep... that's what the website says. ... and I'll bet you a round of beers, bjorn, that when you apply, you'll find it's been cancelled - again - because there aren't enough interested foreigners in all of Cali to support the program.

If I'm wrong about that, I hope you'll come back and tell us. It sounds like a great program if they can deliver. Think of all the friends you could make on that campus...
