Enough with the England bashing

Jeez, this is supposed to be a forum on Colombia, reading about how much England 'sucks' is getting annoying.

It's call envy ;)

their blue passport and dollars don't impress the girls here, hehhee,
In Colombia they believe they are god gift to women but here they are just another kid from the block.;))

They don't like Argentineans either.... why? because those guy are
GORGEOUS....

On the othe hand there are some nice Americans , here were I live there is one, good looking, wealthy about 45 looks good for his age,and you don't see him on the bars pretending he is the best and a God. when I talk to him he is soooooo different from "some" pbh Americans, you would have thought he was English :))) that's when I think well I should not generalized, there is still hope in the country :)))

Don't mind the propeller boys A lifetime ago I worked in the States. I met some bad Yanks; but, on the whole, they were a pretty decent bunch. I recall one occasion, drinking beer with my boss in the garden, when a neighbourhood kid came up and started to insult England. A most odious child, with his smug and squeaky voice, wearing one of those vari-coloured skullcaps with a small propeller sticking out on top of it (actually he wasn't, but I could have easily imagined him with one). At one point this little turd said: 'Lady Di's a whore.' This enraged my boss, who on my behalf (and in the interests of Anglo-American relations) offered to shoot the brat there and then on the spot. So there you have it. The two sides of the nickel: The rude child and the true American gentleman.

And PBH is like that: Lots of gents from the Land of the Free and minority of propeller cap boys.

And we shouldn't worry about the latter too much. Basically, they're literary creations- to be read for entertainment value. For example, Elmo is essentially a Dickensian character. A sort of Micawber of lust; a Pickwick of desire, as it were.

Morphus is a cartoon character. Based loosely, perhaps, on the 'Flash' Thompson character in Spiderman- the burly lout who tormented Peter Parker so. I can also equally imagine him in a comic strip set in the 50s; appearing as 'Moose' and going on panty-raids, wearing a leather football cap (a natural progression from the propeller one)and generally making a nuisance of himself.

So please don't worry about the England-baiters. I think they're funny. Self-parodies really. No more. And without them, this place'd be as dull as some other sites I could mention.

Great Comment Kalder
Care to describe some of the others here on PBH? There are also others here with feeble minds who like to bash Canada. Funny how they get all up in arms when the bashing comes there way. There are some here that have nothing better to do than critisize others or their countries. Sad but true. You are not supposed to say anything bad about the USA here or Colombia but is seems everything else is fair game.

i dont really care what people say about England. Im not so insecure that I get upset about it. Most people that do comment havent been there and dont really know too much about it. A lot of tourists, especially Americans, take a vacation in Europe and do 2 days in London, day in Paris, 2 days in Spain blah blah and then say they have seen Europe.

When I visit America or Canada, everyone thinks Im Australian. They can tell from my accent apparently and my looks. I had one American guy tell me I cant be British, coz im fairly well built.

Many of our elder viewers love that boring chit. Anyway lots of English walking around and they’re all very nice chaps.

DonGringo Canada had a population of 11 million people in World War II. So, relative to that, 40,000 dead servicemen is a hefty enough sacrifice.

Canadian involvement may not have been a pivotal factor in the overrall result of the War; but we can only speculate about what would have been the outcome without them. Though their numeric contribution was smaller than that of the US and UK, it can be argued that they were a vital component of the larger war machine. If they'd been taken out of the equation, who knows how different the assault on Fortress Europe would have been? What we DO know, was that they played their part with as much determination and vigour as any of the Allies.

I've never heard Canadians boasting about what their country did in the War. Over here in the UK, you tend only to hear about the contribution of 'The Big Three'. I think it's worthwhile speaking up about what the Canadians, Aussies, West Indians, Poles etc. did, more often. So whether it makes you laugh or not, I still say 'here's to 'em'.

candian contribution.. i forgot what the actual numbers were.. from 1939 on, RCN(royal candian navy) handle convoy escort duties almost 50-50 with RN. Most of time convoy escort was boring/dangerous works, but it was a important contribution, allowing precious naval assets to be used elsewhere. Even after US invovlement 1941.. CAN(with the use of US/UK equipment) were a significant part of the North Atanlic convoy protection, providing both naval and air(anti-sub patrols). Allowing valuble US naval/air assets to be used elsewhere(ie, Pacific).

PLUS, prior to US involvement, Canada served as a major logistical center for supplies going to Britian AND a valuable training base for commonwealth soldiers(especially aircrew).

Battle of Dieppe, candian ground forces were slaughter, i believe losing more than 2000 men. BUT it was not in vain, the lesson learned a Dieppe allow ALLIED planners to fix lots of problems that would have been distarous if allow to happen at DDAY. So while CAN contribution was small compare to US/UK/Russia, they still earn a rightly significant place in history books.

PS. of the commonwealth nation, Australia came out of WWII, little bit embittered with England and no love lost between Australia and CHurchill(who many australian blame for losing two of their precious professional division-one a tobruk and the other at signapore).

I agree About the bashing being lame. If you don't like the country, fine, everyone can have an opinion. Just seems uncalled for to bash a country that the US has historically had a "special relationship" with.
As for Canada's contribution to WWII...In numbers it does not seem that great in comparison to the US. But as someone pointed out earlier, if not for them, someone else would have supplied the troops. If their contribution saved 37,000 US soldier's lives, I say thanks to them.

Goye says on Mar 20, 2007, 15:25:

Perhaps people here pick on England because they don't tolerate cultural differences.

In so many ways, people are used to defend and stick to their customs and impressions, thinking that what they think and doing what they do is the "right" way of doing things.

Since English have these slick, "suave" manners that definitely contrast with American manners (rude, bulk, straight forward and right to the point), usually all of those native Gringos, Colombian "gringo-wannabes" and else find it irritant and annoying.

I must say that I find some accents from the "Rainy Island" quite difficult and almost impossible to understand, but, at the same time, with an ounce of patience and some looking-forward to a better constructive relationship, I can mingle with English just fine.

Cockney (My appologies if I wrote it bad) accent is a one of those examples. It's so undecypherable that most of us simply can't grasp a darn thing. But, other Enlgish fellas really sound "chévere" when they use their accent and their charm.

Simon says on Mar 20, 2007, 15:28:

Of course they have a special relationship, England is their 'madre patria' (mother country). If England didn't exist, the US would not have existed either. It's like the relationship between Colombia and Spain.

Statistics and damn Statistics Canada lost 37,000 soldiers.

This is a minor point because I don't have a problem with the list in general. The figures I've seen are a little higher, maybe 4,000 low to 4,300 high.

A good list is at World War 2 casualties. Best breakdown I’ve found.

The numbers are more telling when looking at the population numbers in relation to the losses. Civilian deaths were numerous in many countries.

Also who helped with the effort and their location? For instance no Canadian civilians were killed in Canada and Sweden and Cuba both lost zero. OK if not zero then essentially zero because Cuba lost 100.

Another interesting fact is that the French, under their Vichy government "leaders". Racical leaders? Killed over 2000 allied troops during the African Invasion AFTER leaflets were dropped ASKING THEM NOT to fire on the troops. Where were the FREE FRENCH anyway? Burning cars? Great place that France. No wonder they score 63 on the “happiness list and Colombia 9.

Don Gringo and Canadians This is just what I am talking about. You cannot judge all Canadians by one person just like you cannot judge all English by one person's actions etc.. It is obvious that this guy did not know what he was talking about even though he was some kind of important guy. Hell you can ask almost any "English Speaking" Canadian on the street and they will tell how important it was for the Americans to get involved in the war. If a ship from Mars came down and looked upon us do you think they could tell the difference between an Englishman, Ausi, American or Canadian? You have much more experience and knowledge then most Don Gringo. I am taken back that you would think all Canadians share this fools thoughts about the war. The Americans may have come late in the war but the war may not have been won without them. They really saved the day. I personally think when you insult or bash another person's country it is similar to a personal attack.

Did you know that Canada was attacked by a German submarine on the St. Lawrence River. Here is an article if you care to read it.

Don Gringo I guess I cannot convince you. This guy does not represent "all" Canadians. He obviously had his head burried up his butt.

Here is a comment that I found on the internet today written by a Canadain:

"In WW2 they played a pivotal role. If it weren't for the USA's contribution to the Africa campaign Monty would have had a hellish hard time getting to Sicily. And the pressure from North Africa kept precious supplies from the eastern front. The landing at Normandyserved the same purpose, not to hold back Russia from advancing into Europe, but to speed Germanies collapse. Everyone can second guess what may have happened but the truth is, how would the war have progressed is Germanies ally Japan had proceeded unchallenged and been able to press out of china into Siberia and Russia. If Russia had been forced to fight a two front war. In the pacific the rest of the world's contribution bordered on Token. A few ships from Britain like the Repulse and the Warspite. A few ships from Australia, the De Ruyter from Denmark. The USA can proudly claim they won the war in the Pacific almost single handedly.

And if it weren't for the industrial power of the USA being shipped across the Atlantic Via Halifax the second world war would have had a much different outcome.

All in all this whole "I'm better than you" routine serves neither side. We are alike, we are different. Some things one does better, some things the other does better. Get over it"'

This is what was written. I believe there is allot of truth in what he said.
