I just returned from visiting a Caleña I met last summer. I’ve been cautiously optimistic about our chances until reading some of the posts here lately. Dan in his “A Number" thread looks like he met the devil herself and Igpaa in “HELP!!!" doesn’t seem much better off. Unfortunately, none of us here at PBH know the full story, maybe the girls had their reasons or were honestly not players at first, but got twisted up by our great American "society" and "family values", but with all this talk of betrayal, revenge, retribution and I-864 obligations of support …You guys are really bumming me out.
As for my chica, we've gone out a half a dozen times and always had a good time, but like some dumbass teenager (even though I didn’t call her for months before), now I can't stop thinking of her. (I suppose, in a week or two, as I get back into my “normal" life, she’ll fade into the background again.) I met her in working in an almacen, she looks great and seems to have a good personality and we laugh alot together. I really think she’s a sweet-heart.
But, of course, there are the obvious differences:
I'm a New England Gringo, my Spanish seems to be getting worse with practice... (why any language needs 14 verb tenses, I'll never know)... I can’t dance Latin to save my life. I’m a tech-nerd Engineer who works all the time and I tend to be quiet and reserved by nature… not what most Latinas are looking for, I’m sure. Hell… I’m not even sure I’m a nice guy and deserve a great gal anyway. Also, I'm almost positive she told me she was 25 last summer, but when I was down last week, she said she was 20. (I told her I was in my mid 30’s, but I lied too, I’m over 40.) So age is another difference… for a long-term relationship at least.
I visited her house, she still lives with her family in a typical little house in a poor/dangerous area of Cali. The receptionist at my hotel as well as the taxi driver himself advised against my going anywhere near the place, but, to be honest, I didn’t think it was so bad. I commented on how much bigger it looked inside (it looked smaller from the street), she commented how much bigger mine must be... maybe she thinks I live in a mansion.
She seems to be very reserved as far as physical stuff is concerned… maybe I’m used to Party-Girls and Pre-Pagos… but crap, all we’ve done so far is kiss for about two minutes (a very cool two minutes though). As we rode back to her house on my last night, she “had a headache" and just gave me a kiss on the cheek when she got out. That bothered me so the next day, I called from the airport and asked if there was anything wrong… if she was trying to tell me that she just wants to be friends. She said everything was fine and that I was wrong, she doesn’t want to be “just friends". It’s not that I care so much that I’m not getting any… I can wait, but I just want to know if she’s got the brakes on because she’s not attracted to me or has another guy or is religious or what.
Anyway, now I’m wondering all the stupid crap guys like me do in this situation:
Do we really have a future ?... Is she too young ?... I’m I too old ?... Does she actually like me or does she just want money, a good time and a way out ?... Should I head right back to Colombia to see her ?... Invite her to the States ?... Write her a love-letter ?... Call her every day ?... Ask her to marry me ?........... blah, blah, blah.
Hopefully, I won’t be writing another post here in a year or two about how I just walked in on the love of my life in bed with my best friend… or how she raided my bank account and took off… or any other of the countless miserable variations on broken dreams and lost love… I think I’d rather just get shot in a Colombian street-fight.
