Employment section

Hi moderators, Desidera, Tinto and whoever else. How about putting a section for EMPLOYMENT in Colombia? For Job seekers that are going to Colombia or already in Colombia and employers wanting to advertise their help wanted??

Cool... Anyone know the going rate for teaching in Colombia? Someone told me about $400 a month..Just wondering...I'm referring to teaching children in school...not really business folks...

I know from my US point of view, it would be helpful in locating computer and IT-type savvy people in Cartagena...not to say there is no talent to be found there locally, but it makes is alot easier to search via the net....less time consuming to find leads for longterm employees....i vote for it!

and Mario, that would be so cool to telecommute! best of both worlds!

Just my opinion...and brought to you by the lowest of the low, and foul

Your sister-in-law sold the apartment out from under her sister? At the risk of sounding like a PBH fool, that sounds like a very un-Colombian thing to do. My sister-in-law lives in my wife's apartment and I doubt that she'd ever sell it out from under her.

I hope it works out with you, Mario. On my next trip i need to start off in Bogota to meet with some military people there. Probably be about a week at the most. If you are there, i will treat you and your family to dinner at Carbon de Palo on Ave 19...i just love that place, the music, food, ambience....keep us informed about if they let you go....

If That Ever Happened We would have a bunch of people with no education related degrees, credentials or professional teaching experience, lining up to be "teachers" in Colombia.

I've said it once and I'll say it again because it bears repeating. If you speak English, but aren't credentialed, or you don't have a education related degree, you are a hack and have no business "teaching" anything related to English acquistion. You are doing yourself and the people of Colombia who want to learn English a disservice, by pretending to be something that you are not.

When I retire to Colombia I've earned the right to teach because that's what I do professionally here in the states. If you are serious about teaching, then go to school and learn how to teach, earn a credential and then, most importantly, get in a classroom and get a few years experience under your belt. Then and only then, can you call yourself a teacher.

Anything other than doing the above, and you are a hack, plain and simple.

But if you want/need to stay longer file your marriage with the notary there in colombia. Take a trip to bogota and you'll get a marriage visa for a year. I'm no expert, though i've a very good friend that just went through this about a year ago. He did not have to leave the country and got the marriage visa in bogota in a 2 day trip. I think he has to renew every year??? THey did it without an atty. I was impressed

Nice website Mario! Once upon a time I went to college to be a commercial photographer. I helped pay my way through school doing digital restorations. But sadly, I found it too difficult to make a living in the photography field.

Strobers I have to disagree with you. There are many cases here in the US alone where those with out a degree in education teach, one just has to look at those who teach in Hospital Doctors, and thos who teach in Nursing programs, one has to look at those who teach IT course. I would also argue that a degree in education doesn't mean one can teach.

Sorry to hear that man! I guess he's the boss and its his decision, but it still sucks. I was pulling for ya.....have a few extra after work beers tonight! Hopefully the time you got left will go quickly. About six months or so you say? I haven't really followed your CR-1 progress in the visa section, why is it taking so long for you?

whaaaaaaaaaaahapen? Mario - I thought your wife was in the US? What happened? Also do what I did - offer your boss work at home, don't tell them that it's Colombia, Tell them you want a change of scenery near the mountains or make up some crap. Keep a US address in a state far away and tell him you'll come in on demand. Do direct deposit, get VOIP with a phone number in your "new city" and because your company is small they will never run a check to see the inbound IP's, regardless of the version of VPN - so they will not know you are in Colombia. Also, the deal maker is cut your salary in half in order to gain the "telecommuting" priveleges. Companies love getting six figure, proven workers fo 50K and 50K in Colombia is sweeeeet even if the peso hits 1000.

Colombia will have no idea you are working in the US and all your banking and affairs is done over the internet with US accounts. Of course you still pay uncle sam. Everybody is happy.

Lastly as you know some of the food that is shot in the Kitchen is fake (stuff added like shellac to make it shiny etc...). I had an old girlfriend who worked for a food magazine. One night someone broke into the office and stole a bunch of computers. Before leaving they ate "the food". The criminals were caught because they all ended up in the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Hysterical.

MARIO...Boooooo... I had my fingers crossed for you all along. I'm just about to start my own "Visa Journey" and I've had many a fantasy on how I could wait it out in Cali while pulling a U.S. salary. I was all set to live vicariously through you! It's really too bad, all along I thought that since it was a temporary situation you were requesting it would be granted.

Honey & Mario There at least 4 posters between here and the other site working for the US via PC in Colombia - actually one guy is working for an Australian company. I'm one myself, however my boss is in India for some problem and I'm stuck in the US for another 2 months. # at &% at !.

Mario - You never said your wife was in the US - I just thought the plan was visa to here after marriage. I don't always get here and go months without PBH, so I was out of the loop. The tunnel client is on your PC/Laptop and the host doesn't care where you are as long as it's really you and your PC that is logging in. With later versions of VPN there is a "where is this connection coming from" feature that may or may not be looked at. I doubt a Photo company is going to look at that as much as say, a Government Agency or SEC firm (yeah, they want folks logging in from Afganastan). Just mentioning this in case you decide to go to a different company.

My boss is in India now logging in every other day, not a problem. Folks go on vacation and take their laptops and log in from everywhere - no IP configuration on the host or client necessary.

Maybe you can tell your current boss how much moving means to you and that you will cut your salary and fly into the office when needed. Can't you just FTP your work to a server or send stuff back and forth in Email, using Photoshop and such on your local machine? Also your email at work could be forwarded to an outisde account (hotmail) and you wouldn't need to be on the company's network. Just wondering.

Also older, les expensive versions of VPN allow you to "bridge" from another PC. You terminal into your VPN PC at your aunt's house in Florida from your external PC in Bogotá. VPN server thinks you are in Florida. Again, this only works with older versions of VPN.

Just throwing stuff out there as working from CO with half a US salary is an awesome way of life. Returning to the US every other month for a few days allows one to visit their family and pick up supplies etc...

Good luck and wishing you the best.
