Emeralds (Gringo looking for Green)

Any advise, direction in buying a Colombian Emerald from the US. Online Jewelers? Ebay? I am looking to spend around $1000 US for an Emerald Solitair. Would prefer one from the Muzo mine.

you are lucky..salsaboy if you live near vegas, you can visit the best pawnshops
in the world, take your time, and maybe get lucky.
they are pros,they buy well.
you can take the time to look, compare, and bargain in
your own language.for 1000 you should get something nice,
but not big.1-2ct.
emerald buying over the net is not recommended,
you really need to see and compare emeralds in person.
suerte...

Thanks OldGringo Vegas is a short trip for me so I will try there. I did see a lot of emeralds on Ebay Jewelers but I think you are correct....it is difficult to judge from a jpeg.

I may not be a neutral party on this subject....I sell emeralds online via www.embassyemeralds.com. But I agree there are some benefits of buying in person. Obviously. But if not online.... most people really have limited access to good emeralds. If you can't come down to Colombia.... what are your options? As a dealer, I feel its safe to buy online as long as you're dealing with a reputable person on the other end. How do you know?..... well if the website you're looking at takes the time to make a nice site with all the security features you expect from a reputable business and they take the time to educate the customer (which is necessary when you're talking about emeralds).... send them an email. Often the quality of their response (and perhaps their grammar) might tip you off if the person on the other end is some hack selling junk. If you have trouble looking at a .jpeg and deciding.... just write and ask more about it.

Also, I wouldn't discourage you from looking at emeralds from other mines in Colombia.... Muzo has the name, but the others produce some pretty spectacular stones as well. I've seen great emeralds from from all of the emerald mines you're likely to ever hear of.

There are occasionally some deals to be found on ebay, but beware. There is a lot of junk there too. We've had people steal images and content from our site to lend their really bad emeralds and other stones credibility. Its illegal, but it happens. Also if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.... how else can someone sell you gems for $0.99.

Good Luck!
