PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
This is for anyone who is bringing a Colombian spouse or fiancee to the US and lives in an area whose Latin population is predominantly Mexican. I would encourage your spouse to network with the Mexicanas. Those women really stick together and look out for one another, whether it's child care or food or employment. She may see herself as different and yes she is but they do share a language and a similar culture. They knew my wife was looking for a job and thanks to this network she landed one today. Viven las Mexicanas!

kernow62 says on Oct 3, 2005, 06:26: Good point UTC. In Orlando the Colombian community does tend to help other Colombians with employment, however they also are only too happy to take advantage of their countrymen by paying them crap wages. Of course a low paying job is better than no job.

I also have couples Colombians friends who are here in Texas under the same circumstances as I am. We support each other in many ways. For example; in employment, babysitting, bottom line we care for each other.

utopiacowboy says on Oct 3, 2005, 18:52: Vega28, you must be living in Houston or some other area where there are a lot of Colombians. My wife is the only Colombian in our town an hour outside of San Antonio. When it comes to Latins, it's the Mexicanos or nothing. Which was the point of my post. RUV says on Oct 4, 2005, 16:23: Utopia You and Aztec are correct. I am first generation Mexican American and have seen both sides. When my parents first came here they moved into a Hispanic community. My mom never learned English. Why, because she did not need to. My dad only knows some words, but sure as hell can curse. This is the reason that we get along so well. It is the language problems they have when they get here.
