El negocio de mi suegra revisited

El negocio de mi suegra
view edit

Of all the ideas that you see gringos coming up with to make money in Colombia, you never see this one mentioned. My mother-in-law just bought a cock-fighting arena along with the restaurant that caters to the cock-fighting patrons.

My brothers-in-law have always been into cock fighting. They have fighting birds and are somewhat successful at it. Now the family is heading into the business full-fledged with the arena and the restaurant. It's out near the Monteria airport and you can imagine what kind of joint it is with the drunken spectators hollering and swilling aguardiente and the vallenato music blasting while dust and blood fly through the air. It's gotta be a corroncho's dream.

The beauty of having a restaurant there is that you can butcher the losing birds and then feed them to the spectators, or even their former owners, fried up. Did you lose your paycheck betting on that cock that couldn't fight worth a damm - now you can eat him!

The U.S. venues are not fixed locations.

You surely notice the rapid deterioration of Colombian cultural traits. There are those who wish to subjugate Colombians to more closely adhere to their beliefs, not through physical force but defining what is politically correct and massive propaganda to sell it to a population without regard or thought toward possible outcomes.

I never understood why cock-fighting was considered cruel, when ringing a chicken's neck was acceptable. Watching a cock-fight wouldn't be my thing, but I personally have no problem with it. If that makes me a barbarian, so be it. Bull fighting is OK? Fishing and then cleaning caught fish? Hunting? Eating any meat? Spraying mosquitoes with bug killer?

Anyway, good luck to the family Utopiacowboy. I doubt you'll have any problems with PETA in Colombia. I hope the business is successful. I am off to TGI Friday's for some chicken fingers and beer.

Cock Fighting is Big All Over
Filipinos love it as well.

Few people knew that cock fighting even existed here in bucolic BC until 2 drunken Filipinos were arrested for fist fighting in the street in a quiet suburb one evening.

Upon investigation of a nearby yard Police found a complete permanent fighting ring/cages for birds the whole works.

The Filipinos in charge-who were charged with animal cruelty and some other Bee Ess-were adamant that the birds had been imported legally from the Philippines 'for training purposes' and that nothing unlawful was going on(!)

I think they paid a fine for some Parking Violations and that was that.

Monteria is a happening town a place I quite like-even if it can be a violent dusty redneck shit hole at times-no place is perfect after all.

More on cockfighting in De Banana Republic...como Colombia Cockfighting's days may be numbered

On any given weekend, nestled away in the quiet corners of Acadiana, crowds of spectators pack into warehouses, gather around a circular pit and watch two roosters fight it out with metal razors attached to them.
Most times, that fight is to the death.

While the battle rages, spectators place bets on the chickens, attempting to weigh the outcome of the match.

Cockfighting is illegal in every state except Louisiana, but the days of roosters fighting for sport in a pit soon may come to an end here.
Several legislative bills have been proposed in the state Capitol, all with the purpose of banning the bloodsport. One federal bill banning the transport of the fighting birds across state lines already is sitting on President Bush's desk.

Donald Cravins Sr., mayor of Opelousas and former state senator, always has voted against a ban on cockfighting, but even he admits Louisiana's pastime may become a thing of the past.

"I was always opposed to the outlawing of it," he said. "But it appears the bill to outlaw cockfighting will pass."

(Men introduce their birds before a cockfight in February during the annual Grande Boucherie des Cajun at Magnolia City Park in St. Martinville.)

Legislative movement
Cravins Sr. said while many may consider cockfighting to be a ruthless bloodsport that exploits chickens, it has been popular in South Louisiana "forever and ever."
Acadiana is home to two well-known cockfighting arenas - the Sunset Recreational Club and the Atchafalaya Game Club in Breaux Bridge, both of which hold large chicken fights near the end of every month, mostly on Fridays and Saturdays.

From an image standpoint, Cravins Sr. said he can understand why many politicians may want to outlaw cockfighting.

"A lot of people are probably thinking, 'Why are we the last ones standing with cockfighting?' " he said.

In March, a ban on cockfighting in New Mexico - leaving Louisiana the only state to allow it - may have sent a message, Cravins Sr. said.

Marie Centanni, Gov. Kathleen Blanco's press secretary, said Blanco is opposed to cockfighting and will support any legislation to outlaw the sport in Louisiana.

U.S. Sen. David Vitter is one of many spearheading legislation to outlaw cockfighting. Recently, the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill would make it illegal to buy, sell or transport across state lines an animal used for fighting.

Anyone caught sponsoring or exhibiting an animal in a fighting venture could receive up to three years in prison, based on the proposed legislation.

The bill received unanimous support in the Senate and is in its final stages.

"With cockfighting being identified as a possible outlet to spread the avian flu and its link to associated violent crimes and illegal gambling, we have all the more reason to crack down on this cruel and dangerous practice," Vitter said in a written statement. "This federal law increases the penalties for those who participate in animal fighting, including more jail time."

Cravins Sr.'s son, state Sen. Donald Cravins Jr., has been vocal in the debate, saying he will oppose a cockfighting ban.

Three bills are being brought before the legislature, said Elbert Guillory, state representative for District 40. Two of the bills would ban cockfighting immediately while another would phase out the sport gradually during several years, he said. Guillory said he is against all three.

A question of image
Guillory, who makes no secret about frequenting cockfighting matches, said most people think those who participate in cockfighting are "hillbilly hicks."
But that's not the case, he said, adding that most people who enjoy cockfighting are professional business people.

"I'm no hick, and I enjoy chicken fighting. People who come to see the fights are educated and upscale," Guillory said. "Major business people come to see the fights. Doctors, lawyers, teachers. I personally know two clergyman who frequent the fights."

Jerry Domengeaux, 58, who has lived in St. Landry Parish all his life, agreed.

"The people who do this aren't bad people," he said. "Business people are involved in this. It's a sport they enjoy, like football."

"That blows my mind," said Dan Paden, a representative with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. "What gentleman would choose to be found gathered around watching animals tear each other to shreds? Cockfighters look with glee at animal suffering and bloodshed and keep going back for more. I think that speaks to a true sadism."

Spectators at cockfights often bet on the outcome. While Guillory said he keeps his bets to $5, he said there are other spectators of the cockfights who will bet large sums of money.

"There are persons who engage in very high bets. I would imagine that thousands of dollars can exchange hands in the course of one match," he said.

Paden said the betting makes it worse.

"This is all for some sick form of entertainment for a few dollars," he said.

Cruelty debated
Many critics have said the biggest argument against cockfighting is the barbaric nature of the sport.
Sharp, metal razor spurs are attached to the legs of the birds, and two chickens are placed into a small pit, where they fight, surrounded by dozens if not hundreds of people.

Vitter recently decried the sport publicly, saying the practice of cockfighting fuels "a negative image of our state," while others have simply called the sport horrific and cruel.

Guillory said opponents of cockfighting need a reality check.

"We talking about chickens here," he said. "We know that chickens slaughtered by Kentucky Fried Chicken are kept in far worse conditions as they are raised and prepared for the slaughter."

He added that more chickens probably are killed every year by large fast-food corporations that those killed in cockfighting matches.

Guillory also said nobody forces the chickens to fight - they do it instinctively, and sometimes to the death.

Changing environment
Even without a cockfighting ban, some parts of the state are taking action against the sport.
In Bossier Parish in North Louisiana, the police jury changed the standard of its cruelty to animals ordinance to include cockfighting, said Walter Altimus, parish administrator for the police jury.

"If you have two fowl fighting, it's cruelty to animals," he said. "We added the word fowl to the ordinance and effectively banned cockfighting in Bossier Parish."

Before the ban however, Altimus pointed out that anyone wanting to fight chickens within Bossier Parish was required to have a permit to do so.

He said cockfighting isn't as big in North Louisiana as it is in South Louisiana, but still thought the ban was necessary.

Paden said the lack of a ban in Louisiana on cockfighting shows inconsistency in the law.

"I think it's important to point out that Louisiana has a 10-year prison sentence for people convicted of fighting dogs. Cockfighting is no less barbaric than dogfighting and deserves the same standard," he said. "It's among the most sadistic and violent forms of cruelty to animals in America."

(A rooster is fitted with spurs, which are used during cockfighting, at the annual Grande Boucherie des Cajun in St. Martinville.)

Economics and industry
The economic impact of a cockfighting ban on certain areas in Louisiana could be severe, Guillory said, especially in rural areas of South Louisiana, where cockfighting has been around for years and some businesses have come to expect the revenue the bloodsport generates.
"It's no question that the economy of St. Landry Parish would be hurt by a ban," Guillory said. "Veterinary offices, feed stores, barber shops, lumber yards, hotels, restaurants - those venues would suffer because of a ban. People who raise the chickens, their families, they're dependent on the chicken fighting industry."

While he couldn't cite specific numbers, Guillory estimated cockfighting may bring in upwards of $1 million per year for St. Landry Parish.

The revenue primarily is generated by individuals who come from out of state and frequent local establishments, Guillory said.

"These people come into our community. They spend money in Opelousas. They spend money in Lafayette. They're reputable people who come here, and they bring their money with them," Domengeaux said.

Area residents who participate in the sport buy items from local feed stores and frequent veterinary hospitals, bringing a consistent flow of cash to area businesses.

Cravins Sr. agreed.

"In the rural areas of our state, places like feed stores will be affected by this bill to outlaw cockfighting. This bill will have a significant impact on these businesses," he said.

Domengeaux's own lumber yard in Sunset profits from the fights and those who raise chickens, when people purchase construction materials to make chicken coops and other fortifications.

"The ban won't put us out of business, but it's nice to have that extra income," he said.

Bob Odom, commissioner of agriculture and forestry, said he supports a ban on cockfighting that is gradual, not immediate. His reasoning is that those who have a financial interest in the sport would need time to pull out their financial resources.

"You need to give anyone who has an investment time to get out before you just outlaw it," he said. "I think for any business, if the state is going to do something to change something, they ought to give them the chance to pull out."

'A way of life'
In rural areas of Acadiana, raising chickens and fighting them is a not a fad. Cockfight-ing has existed in St. Landry and St. Martin parishes for generations, with locals in the area describing the sport as a way of life.
"This sport has been in the community for many, many years," Domengeaux said.

However, Domengeaux, like Cravins Sr., said it's only a matter of time before the South Louisiana pastime goes the way of the dinosaur - or dogfighting.

"It's inevitable. They'll outlaw it. The handwriting's on the wall," Domengeaux said. "It's just a matter of when. Cockfighting is on its way out."

Domengeaux speculated the cockfighting way of life may not end with a simple prohibition of the sport.

"I'm pretty sure there's still dogfighting around and it's illegal, so if they outlaw cockfighting, I'm sure it'll be around," he said. "It'll go underground."
