El editorial del periodico Liberal - "El Tiempo" de Bogota le dice "SI" a la reelecion de Uribe.

Así las cosas, y a la espera de la Corte, la realidad presente es que hay una reelección aprobada por el Congreso y una campaña política con los motores ya encendidos, en la que se vislumbran numerosos aspirantes a la Presidencia. Una nómina tan lujosa como variada, que demuestra la capacidad colombiana para producir líderes de nivel. Carlos Gaviria y Antonio Navarro, por la izquierda democrática; Horacio Serpa, Rafael Pardo, Rodrigo Rivera, Andrés González y Cecilia López, por el liberalismo; los ex alcaldes Antanas Mockus y Enrique Peñalosa... En la nómina figura, por supuesto, el presidente �lvaro Uribe. El líder que, sin restarles méritos a los demás, nos parecería el mejor calificado para gobernarnos en el cuatrienio que viene.

En la Colombia de aquí y ahora, �lvaro Uribe es un mandatario difícilmente reemplazable. Más allá de su estilo personalista, de su inquietante neopopulismo o de las prevenciones que despierta el cambio de las reglas del juego a su favor, es el que más le conviene al país, que tiene en él a un conductor capaz, firme y responsable, con el don de mando que la gente reclamaba. Uribe interpretó el profundo anhelo colectivo de seguridad ante la violencia y el crimen. Y lo sigue interpretando, con un compromiso y una dedicación –y unos resultados– que opacan los lados más cuestionables de su gestión. Condiciones que no se improvisan, ni se encuentran a la vuelta de la esquina.

Con �lvaro Uribe, Colombia ha recuperado un valor supremo: la confianza en sí misma. Y, también, la del mundo exterior, como lo demuestra el creciente interés en el país de los inversionistas internacionales. Todos estos factores hacen que sea difícil mirar el abanico de presidenciables y no inclinarse por Uribe.

No significa esto que al Presidente haya que girarle un cheque en blanco, ni que este diario vaya a suspender las críticas a su gobierno, o romper el equilibrio informativo en el cubrimiento electoral.

Durante tres años, desde estas páginas hemos analizado los actos de gobierno con beneficio de inventario, aplaudiendo aciertos y cuestionando los que consideramos desaciertos. Al punto de que abundan los lectores que tildan a EL TIEMPO de antiuribista, como no faltarán los que ahora lo tachen de lo contrario. Lo único que podemos garantizarles, a unos y a otros, es que, de la misma manera y con igual espíritu crítico, seguiremos los pasos del futuro Presidente-candidato

It was expected that this paper would throw its support to the current administration; after all, Uribe's VICE-PRESIDENT Santos is the son of the newspaper owner (Talking about independant media..hehe). But that aside, this is why Uribe MUST NOT be immediately reelected: An immediate reelection would only evidence that Colombia has not stopped being a THIRD WORLD BANANA REPUBLIC in which the country's people put pressure on the independant judicial body of the Supreme Court, and rally behind a CAUDILLO or mesianic leader (think of Bush??? hehe) to solve their problems. A solid and stable democracy is only reflected in the ROBUSTNESS of all its institutions which will be around in the long-term, but not on the lifetime and power of a CAUDILLO. That's a little sophisticated and short-termed solution. The thing is that Uribe knows it but he'd rather opt out for maintaining power. A more intelligent and strategic way to continuing with the Colombian economic and security momentum is to have an election in which URIBE is NOT a candidate but in which he could be could present another candidate of his own party for reelection. Now, for the period 2010-2014. Uribe should run; this would REALLY and GREATLY strengthen all institutions, the rule of law and the understanding for long-term solutions. DEMOCRACIES SHOULD NOT rest on the weak shoulders of a person, but instead on the solid foundation of the democratic INSTITUTIONS. NO A LA REELECCIÓN DE UN CAUDILLO, S� A LA SOLIDEZ DE LAS INSTITUCIONES DEMOCR�TICAS!!! 0 funny, 0 helpful.
