Ecuador Attack Linked To Reelection Bid

Correa has boosted his popularity in Ecuador with his tough stance against Colombia.

"Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa has boosted his standing at home and abroad with his firm response to a Colombian military raid in his country"

"Ecuadoreans will unite to support Correa's firm leadership against a foreign threat ... this will put a rubber stamp on his re-election," said Paulina Recalde, a pollster with Perfiles de Opinion (Opinion Profile) in Quito.

For those that have been following Uribe's reelection bin, what's the chance that crisis atmosphere created by the attack will help push his reelection through?

Don't think so. Correa was only took office last year, that means there'll be a good 3 years till the next election. Then again, 2 years to election campaigns. . . Possible, I suppose. Bit dubious, though?

like Thatcher and Uribe, shoot me down as I excpect, Thatcher started a war to get reelected, Uribe manipulated the masses to get reelected, ( changed the law when in power ) a second term 8 years, a third term borders on dictatorship or manipulation of the masses, but I suppose it must be dificult to think straight when looney Bush is pulling the strings and has his hand so far up your arse it hurts to blink. OIL OIL OIL OIL, mock Chavez but he looks after the life blood of his country, ok he might antagonize loads of people !! so why is he so popular, helping the normal everyday folk, the farmers that work the land to feed the rich city fat cats, you tell me, you gotta admit he has a reasuring relaxed way about him infront of the media, if my voice sounds muffled its because my heads up my arse looking for the logic I thought I had !

Thatcher and Uribe, there's a combination for you. Throw in one of the Bushes and good ole Ronnie and you'd have the Four Horsemen of the Neo-Liberal Apocalypse!

Uribe won a second term with damn near 70% of the vote! I'm seeing graphitti around Medellin wanting Uribe for a third term. The Colombian people are getting a taste of prosperity. Sure, there is a long way to go but with Uribe, the country is heading in the right direction. Chavez speaks some truth but he is using that truth twisted with propaganda to further his agenda. Chavez is fighting a losing battle with Colombia. Colombia will win.

Bush is pulling the strings? So I guess the Congress and the Senate of the United States have no jurisdiction? I suggest you study government a little before you make "Chavez" statements. Chavez poplular? So is Castro, if you want to live. So was Saddam and he was reelected with 100% of the vote. His beloved people wasted no time in hanging the bastard.

Stay tuned....this is gonna get good.......

I read Kruschev had a pretty big lead when he was elected. Kim son Dill in NKorea won by 100% too. It takes more than a President Carter endorsement for me to believe "the people" want a Chavez watching after them. Why has anybody with the means, emigrated from Venezuela to other countries like the US, Spain, etc? Damn near identical to what happened in Cuba in the early Castro years.

If Hugo was so concerned about the normal everyday folk, he would do things that would foster economic growth. Even with the oil revenue that Castro doesn't have, subsidies can only go so far.

Ecuador election could be *this* year:

"Correa, 44, in office little more than a year, has won praise from Ecuadoreans before early elections that must be held later this year if, as widely expected, a new constitution is approved in a referendum in the second half of 2008."

This just isn't true anymore. Almost all of his social programs have been a disaster. The economy is so messed up right now there isn't any food for the poor people to eat. Why do you think he's suddenly losing elections?

Based on some of the things coming out of Correa's mouth at the moment it would be easy to suggest it's doubtful he's capable of strategizing, but that would a cheap shot so I won't mention this possibility. It does seem to me that this support will have been an unintended consequence of his pandering to Chavez. Undoubtedly, he'll maintain this posture if it indeed proves helpful in generating support for his other domestic aims.

Chavez' popularity is going down the drain, his approval ratings are now in the 30s. Some of you guys need to update your reading material. Then again, some haven't had a lucid moment since the Thatcher admin.

Correa is tripping, seriously. He's acting like a total chick who was just dumped by her ex and is making such a big spectacle of what happened just like a kid in school. But he will soon come down to face reality and then he will show who he truly is, a kiss ass. Remember how popular Bush was right after 9/11? Then it only took a few years for him to show his true colors. But then the majority of US citizens got sick with the stupid flu and re-elected him. And look how we are now.

Hey I voted for the other guy. =D
