This video posted again... This book reveals a good deal and makes some very valid and true points. But there is so much OBVIOUS fiction and exageration in the book that he makes himself seem extremely fulla crap and difficult to take seriously. A shame since much of what he says really rings true. Also he's very full of himself and appears to be a quick buck, cheap author. "Jackals" "The hitmen", puhleeze. He thinks he's James Bond. He even has the seducing gorgeous woman who lures him into all of this. Truly sensationalist.

He should have written this as a documentary reporting type book. Not some ego stroking "Let me sell the screenplay rights".

Also realize that US and other corporations have the technology to implement power grids and refineries. The home countries don't - so the money HAS to go to outside corporations that CAN do the work.

The problem is with the financing afterwards which makes countries indebted to the big UN powers like the US.

Realize that as much as we hate Chávez, and I've said this before, that I admire him for nationalizing oil in Venezuela. He basically said, "We've paid you 20 times over for the refinery that you built for us and you're still sucking 80% of the profits from OUR national resources. Take a fukin' hike." Of course he said it in Spanish.

What he does with the profits is beyond the scope of my comment.

Don't mention it! I didn't get through the whole book as I started to get annoyed and realized that more footnotes and more to the point and less fictional self indulgence would sell less books for him. He's not able to substiantiate a lot. The whole thing could have been written in exposition format in about 60 pages.

Yep - I hate it when I get books like that, got to take it with a grain of salt. If it goes over the top - you just put it down or throw it in the round file

He's actually very credible and what he says is very true and very important. However he presents it like a snake oil salesman and undermines what he says he's trying to accomplish.

It's as if a reporter has evidence as to where Bin Laden was located or wanted to inform the world of an important truth sells the story (for more $ or fame) to the National Inquirer tabloid instead of the Washinton Post. Or he interviews on Gerry Springer instead of 60 Minutes.

My point is instead of making himself this glorified Economic Hitman with all the espionage and hot dames he could have presented this in a more credible fashion, thus helping his cause, the one he so vehemently claims he is trying to garner support for.

I am not familiar with this book, so I am assuming he was the author and his original submission was probably edited. It sounds like maybe he should have taken the time out to have someone else write it for him? I have read books like this before and the author's style was so bothersome I could not complete the book, but the info was useful - always wished they would have simply had someone else interview them and write it more professionally

Mr. Hollywood says on May 18, 2008, 07:44:

I have friends who were deeply involved in some of the historical events Perkins claims to have been a part of. Their response to the book was simply, "Never heard of the guy." If he played the roles he claims they would have known him.

I think his macro critiques of some of the deleterious effects of development aid are valid (though hardly unique to him) but my sense is that a huge portion of the autobiographical details of the book are fudged or totally fictional.

rocinante says on May 18, 2008, 15:25:

Hollywood you hit the nail on the head. And Rubi, yeah I agree the stuff he talks about is real. But hardly unique to him, as per Mr. Hollywood

Perkins blew it with his self indulgent writing style. I think a good deal of what he wrote is just fluff and I don't believe he did everything he said he did. He may have interviewd people who did this sort of thing, but in order to garner credibility he says he did everything he so it must be true. He says if "they" find out he's revealing all this he's going to be killed - oh the drama. He's pretty out in the open if you ask me.

Not too far into the book one gets a sense of bullshit - especially when he is in Panama.
