Easter in Cartagena

We are going to Cartagena for 2 weeks between
March 14 and 28 - Easter time. We wonder if people
in Cartagena observe this holiday in a special way.
For example in catholic countries in Europe before
Christmas you weren't supposed to go partying.
It has changed since then. In latin countries Semana
Santa is the biggest religious holiday and for example there is travel advisory for example for Dominican Republic of no availability of water sports during Easter week. Not that we care about this...
Would appreciate any comments.

easter Don't know for sure, but travel is very popular during Easter week because most people are off work. Last year, my girlfried was upset during semana santa. Her family did not have enough dinero to travel to the beach, but many of her friends were going.

I was in Cartagena for Semana Santa last year and it was nothing special. There are a few religious preocessions throught the old town, but nothing very eloborate. Basically, they just get a bump in national tourism for their beach resorts.

From what Im told, Mompox and Popayan are the places to be in colombia to see special Semana Santa observances.

Cartagena will be packed Easter Cartagena Easter, nothing special. Not exactly correct. Easter is a HUGE holiday for Colombians,, I think half the entire population is in either Cartagena or Buga !!!! It will be difficult to find a place to stay in Buga.

Everyone heads back to work after Easter.

Prefer less people on the beach.

Easter in Cartagena Thanks for your reply Poco

Where exactly is Buga. I just found one official site on the Web.
Do the Colombians get whole week off for Easter holiday or just for
assume Good Friday and Monday as in Europe. My background is polish.

Buga The Basilica of Senor de los Milagros is located in Buga.

Buga is a medium sized town about an hours bus ride North of Cali, maybe 75 km.

Monday a holiday?? I remember NO,, but that might not be correct.

Easter is celebrated everywhere and there will be large numbers of people at any church waving palm leaves and listening to a service that will more than likely be outside to accommodate the numbers.

Sleeping with someone a few days before and after Easter when you are NOT married COULD be a problem. Some kind of custom? Maybe I should say when you are NOT married to them? Never researched this.

Easter no-nos The only day you're not supposed to eat meat is Good Friday (Viernes Santo). You're not supposed to take a bath on that day either or on Jueves Santo, because you might turn into a fish.

La Saeta Another popular song that people like to listen at Easter is La Saeta by Joan Manuel Serrat, based on a poem by the Spanish poet Antonio Machado.
" LA SAETA

¿ Quién me presta una escalera
para subir al madero,
para quitarle los clavos
a Jesús el Nazareno?

Saeta popular

¡Oh, la saeta, el cantar
al Cristo de los gitanos,
siempre con sangre en las manos,
siempre por desenclavar!
¡Cantar del pueblo andaluz,
que todas las primaveras
anda pidiendo escaleras
para subir a la cruz!
¡Cantar de la tierra mía,
que echa flores
al Jesús de la agonía,
y es la fe de mis mayores!
¡Oh, no eres tú mi cantar!
¡No puedo cantar, ni quiero
a ese Jesús del madero,
sino al que anduvo en el mar!"

Cheers,
Desi

Easter is a huge holiday everywhere in Latin America, and sure everyone goes to the beach. But the question was about special observances, and no, they really dont do anything too elaborate in Cartagena.

Four Easters In Colombia I do notice a few more church based activities, but have not noticed any other differance in the largr Cities, probably differant in the Countryside.

Ctg is the third busiest time of the year for tourism.

Easter or Holy Week The big holiday is starting the Saturday before and going through Holy Friday and Easter Sunday. Easter Monday everybody is back to work and school. So it depends what you call Easter. If I am not wrong Holidays is most of North Europe is the week after Easter Sunday, we are off like Southern Europe for the week before or what we call Holy Week. I do not remember when the US is off on those days.

A body massage is a Must do In the United States “The dawns early light” reminds you of the Star Spangled Banner, Easter in Cartagena it is when the clubs close.

After a shot of coffee check out the beach. I’m sure there will be a sand sculpture. This is a typical Colombian entrepreneur in action. Sure he got permission to set this up because he did not directly ask for “donations”. There will be a bucket where you can make donations. Especially if you sit on one of the “benches” to take a picture.

There will be a lot of “street vendors”,, even the Colombians don’t like them but it is Easter, a huge holiday and they do need to make a living. Don’t buy a time share.

I’d recommend paying one of the girls on the beach for a “sun tan oil” rub down. Something that is a MUST experience. (Hey,, not just any girl,, one that is “selling” rubdowns).
