Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude shakes central Colombia

BOGOTA, July 3 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake of moderate intensity shook central Colombia early Friday morning, with no reports of casualties or damage, said the National Seismological Network of Colombia (NSNC).

The NSNC said the epicenter of the earthquake, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, was located in the municipality of Chaparral in the central department of Tolima, at a depth of 30 kilometers, which was considered superficial.

"Most cities in central Tolima, the southwestern departments of Valle del Cauca and Huila, and the mid-western departments of Risaralda and Quindio felt relatively strong shakes when the earthquake took place at local time 5:04 a.m. (1004 GMT)," said a spokesman of the NSNC.

The earthquake caused some panic among the local people. "Some people were scared and ran to the streets," the spokesman said. "But they soon calmed down as the quake was very short."

Once when i was a little kid in Cali, we had a pretty big quake and it jammed the front door and we couldn't get out of the house, but then an aftershock came and shaked it loose.

Thanks God I didn't feel it coz I went to bed at 2:40 am (studying for two final exams)so I was in the fifth dream... But everybody else felt it in my house! I just remember the horrible earthquake on January 25th 1999(Armenia, Quindío). I'll be traumatized for the rest of my days... Whatever little shake just freaks me out!

I was taking a shower with my toddlers in Cali when there was a major shake...it was the evening and the lights went out and it was pitch black, I was alone with the kids, wet and scared, somehow got the kids out of the door into the fenced front yard into my neighbour's arms and ran back in the shaking house to get dressed! (They ain't gonna find me NAKED in the ruins of my home) things people think when panicked.

(This was a long time ago...probably the same shake BillyB remembered as a kid)

jaja, I missed Desi streaking, but if it is the same one I remember, the quake jammed our front door shut and we couldn't get out, then an aftershock unjammed it.

About a year ago felt my first shake in Pereira 13 floors up in my mates penthouse the Colombian guy with us shit himself to be honest I thought I would be too but no.The other was about 2 years ago 4 in the morning the bedwas rocking allover the place (yes I no what your thinking) the door was banging like F**k the dogs were going ape shit this was the day I went back to England for 4months the f**k me when I got back to England the same day we had one in Kent (very rare )as we don't have them in England ,must have been following me.
