PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
Posting on behalf of a Colombian friend of mine. She is going to the US soon (for a few months) and wants to know how she can get a licence to drive there. She has a licence here of course but should she get an international licence here before she goes or can she get a US licence in the States on the basis of her colombian licence? And if she can get the licence sorted here what cost and timeframe are wee talking about.
Cheers...

eywed says on Oct 19, 2007, 13:56: If your friend has a valid driver license from colombia she can drive in the united states on that license. She will need to have here Colombian driver license and valid passport with her when she drives. Thats it. She can not get a driver license in the U.S. but if she has a valid Colombian License she does not need one. Ay Hombe!!!!! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

bradenmiami says on Oct 19, 2007, 14:18: You original question does not have enough information to get an answer - each state operates under different guidelines. However, no matter what, she is not legal to drive without receiving an American Driver's license. The only exception would be under provisions to a Diplomat. The "lovemedellin website" is a piece of crap made by some moron who has only been to Medellin once...you'd be better off reading the Lonely Planet advice from a guy who never even came here! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

She had no problem renewing it but this time it was only renewed for 6 months(max time on her visa) She has NO Security number nor is she a legal resident. "Wait a minute. What did you just say? eywed says on Oct 19, 2007, 17:40: If you have a valid colombian drivers license and enter the U.S. with a valid Visa under a treaty that both the U.S. and Colombia are a part of you may drive in the U.S. . While driving in the U.S. you have to have in your posession your Colombian Driver License and your passport while Driving. Over stay your visa and your visa is no longer valid than you may not drive any longer in the U.S. even if your Colombian Driver License is still valid. It goes both ways by the way. So a U.S. citizen who enters Colombia with a Valid Drivers license and passport with valid visa may drive in Colombia. That is what is enforced in the U.S.. Period! I have that in writing. Now, with NO No Fault Insurance requiered, imagine the disaster here in Florida with 1000s of Drivers with no "No Fault" insurance,,,Under the new law passed last week here in Florida, starting Jan 2008, all Florida Vehicle Owners will be requiered to purchase No Fault PIP Insurance again. |
RAAAY says on Oct 21, 2007, 17:45: NC is the same as every other State....................You can drive in Massachusetts and everywere else with your valid Colombian lic...........An international driving lic is basically a translation and a verification of your home country's lic and SOME rental car companies will insist on one of these also..........It is better to get one of these in Colombia before you leave................however it is your valid Colombian lic is what allows you to drive in the US by both the authorities in EVERY State and the insurance companies........................it is only good for six months .........Its useless to argue with ignorance 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
|
Gator says on Oct 22, 2007, 07:12: Remember is is not a license just a permit (IDP) that is accepted as a valid translation. You must still have a valid Colombian license in possession. "Brevior Sltare Cum Deformibus Mulieribus Est Vita!" . 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Both have gotten tickets and when they were pulled over the police gave them a VERY HARD time about having the colombian license. I would tell your friend to get an international license just incase

eywed says on Nov 13, 2007, 17:06: The problem with the police and people with Driver License from other countries is they have never delt with them. I worked in the Florida Keys and down there we would come across alot of people from other countries and we knew how to deal with them. Once I started to work here in Tampa, Florida I found out that many of the Deputies I worked with did not know how to deal with Driver License from other countries and the requierments to drive in the U.S. . I have not come across a person with a Driver License from another Country iin 10 years. Ay Hombe!!!!! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

eywed says on Nov 14, 2007, 09:27: Most police officers will not give you a problem But should you get a ticket for driving on a Driver license from another country, fight the ticket and go into court with your valid Driver License from what ever country your from and most likely the ticket will be thrown out.
