"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink
I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think
about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes
and dreams . If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out
of work and their dreams would be shattered.
Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their
dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

Robert Jorge says on Oct 6, 2006, 01:40: I was just going to say ... Colombian wine? It is horrible. To get a real bottle of wine here is a quest, and costs a pretty penny. If you drink halfway decent wine in Colombia, it isn't Colombian. It is probably Chilean or whatever. I have been here, though it's cowboy territory, for 4 months, and I have not had one sip of wine. Aguardiente, rum, beer, yes ... but no wine. I just lied. I had a sip of Colombian wine at a birthday party. It was served in those tiny plastic shot glasses, and was bright red, sweet, and tasted like cough medicine. Horrible! BEWARE of gold diggers. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

shawnnn says on Oct 6, 2006, 03:21: Drinking wine in Cartagena I love to drink wine. I was having dinner at a nice place across the street from the Hotel Toledo and I asked the waiter for a glass of wine. He actually ran down to the nearest store to buy me a bottle of decent wine. They say few drink wine in Colombia. The waiter was great but the choice of good wine if minimum.

kat1 (Moderator) says on Oct 6, 2006, 05:04: Robert Jorge in Villavicencio if you like white one the only ones I would recomende is Ernest and julio Gallo and Casillero del diablo you can get then in el exito they are about 30.000cop a bottle, now if you want a good one then there is a licorera in town center it won't look like the place you will buy an expensive wine and you won't see the best one on the shelves they are in the back I think because many people won't spend that amount of money in a wine, tell them to show the best one they have and they will take you. some can Set you back at to 70.000.ooCOP.

kat1 (Moderator) says on Oct 6, 2006, 05:08: Mario if you find a good "licorera" then yes you can find excellent wines in Colombia only that the price are very high, that why I said a decent wine and not to expensive are the ones I mention above and you can find it in any supermarket, well In Villavo only Exito and maybe now in Unicentro shopping center.

kat1 (Moderator) says on Oct 6, 2006, 05:35: I agree Mario in the north of Bogota you can get more varieties, I personally dont' buy Red wine not because I don't like it it's because it goes straight onto my head!! so I avoided at all cost. but if you put me to choose I rather have a merlot that a shiraz I find shiraz to sharp for my taste.

Bluesdude says on Oct 6, 2006, 18:27: Wine? The wine is so expensive because the Colombian govt. places outrageous tarifs on imports (and don't forget the IVA). I pay $6 in the US for Castillero Del Diablo, and here in CTG, it's 32-35000 (about $15). There are a couple that I like that are not too expensive - Santa Rita "120" cab or merlot will run you about 19-22000 pesos per bottle; Gato Negro makes a killer Carmenere for about 24-26000 per bottle, and the Argentine Bianchi cheaper label Cabernet or Malbec will run you about 11000. LDW says on Oct 6, 2006, 21:39: Colombian wine I have had occasion to sample some Colombian wines made in el Valle Del Cauca. In La Union, there are some wines made by the Grajales, and I have tasted some other wines made in smaller artesenal wineries in el Valle del Cauca. Even wines that are described as seco (dry) are sweet by our standards. I would characterize them as dessert wines (like Dubonnet, port wine, or sherry) rather than table wines for meals. Fundamentally, I think the problem is that the grape is not a tropical fruit. Grapes are best grown in more temperate climates. Most good table wines in this world result from grapes grown in more temperate climates.
