Leaving for my first visit to Colombia soon, is it safe to drink the tap water in Manizales?

One of my students is the head of the Chemical Engineering Dept. at Andes University and he can't understand why so many people drink bottles water in Colombia (or anywhere). jaramillo says on Jan 12, 2008, 05:46: Generally speaking, the quality of the water depends on altitude. Safe in Manizales, deadly in Barranquilla. However, even in the Andes amoeba can be an issue. You can drink safely from municipal sources (the water is treated) but I would avoid water from an apparently pristine mountain stream.

la campiña says on Jan 12, 2008, 16:52: self presevation, I live in cali and the water is ok to drink, however after living here for 5 years and a little common sense, regardless of how good the water is your body needs to adapt to diferent chemicals and additives, introduce slowly, and buy lots of toilet paper

Robert Jorge says on Jan 12, 2008, 21:03: In Villavo, the rule was brushing your teeth with tap water was fine. But don't swallow. I never saw anybody drink tap water in Villavo. In the past I had people totally disagree with me about drinking water in Villavo (here on PBH). I just did as the locals did. If they didn't drink tap water, I didn't drink tap water. For me it's a moot point anyway. I don't like water. Why drink water when you can drink cold beer? BEWARE of gold diggers. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

ellbee2 says on Jan 14, 2008, 16:11: Ok, Ok.... sheesh. I should have said Bogota water . Excuse for my "sweeping" comment. Also I prefer my water with a hint of Scotch, or more correctly I prefer my Scotch with a hint of water.
