Dress Code for Colombia

Hey,

This may sound like a stupid question, however im returning to Colombia at the end of this month for a bit of travelling.

What do you guys think to wearing "army coloured" shorts and pants. Do you think it would pose a problem with locals or with the military?

Your thoughts are much appreciated!

Gracias
Duncan

If you are gay... Well in latinamerica, only gay guys wear shorts unless you are on the beach. Wearing shorts screams tourist or gay. It can be 200 degrees but most males will wear long pants unless on the sand or by the pool.

hahahahah hahahah really?

I was not aware of that. Theres nothing wrong with shorts, growing up in Australia thats all we wear!, Shorts, thongs and a "wife beater" singlet....

Hmmm oh, and if i was to wear shorts, they wouldnt be tight ones, they would be baggy enough to be comfortable, i dont like my shorts to be cutting off the circulation to my "boys"

army color clothing is no problem in Colombia. shorts look funny, especially at night. you're better off wearing pants even when its hot, unless you are at the beach. every since i have been travelling to Latin America, i have stopped wearing shorts. after all these years, i realize how funny they look.

That photo Hey Morphis,

If i wear shorts its usually with thongs, so i scale a little higher up the "cool" ladder...

How about army coloured long pants??? Yes or no?

hmmmm I'm not sure...as a safety rule I would stay well clear of wearing anything that is army coloured...you don't want to be mistakenly thought of as a guerilla type.....other than that wear what the hell you like...shorts included.

Better to avoid army coloured, especially if you're going to be travelling around. Maybe on an occasion or two in the city it would be fine, though it would scream TOURIST.

Shorts Ditto on the shorts comments. Although I disagree that you will be thought of as gay, you will look like a tourist. In Bucaramanga, only young kids wear shorts...it is rare to see an adult male wearing shorts except on the tennis courts or at the club:)

One of my brothers-in-law sometimes wears shorts. Maybe I've been a bad influence on him.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Yeah, Elmo I don't feel out of place wearing shorts in Cartagena. Of course I live on the beach. And I don't really care what anyone may think of my shorts.

I do wear long pants when I hit Centro on a Friday or Saturday night. But I don't party at night much.

wierd ass thread.... what to wear? for GOD'S sake mate, wear what you fuckin want, what you're comfortable in, what you're used to. i wouldn't suggest shorts in the alta plano...it's bloody cold. anywhere else in colombia--if it's not too cold--wear shorts.

last time i returned, i had a beard like santa clause...mind you, i hate beards. however, i hate shaving more. that said, i was wearing desert cammo and my buddies in llano grande nearly slit my throat to get those threads from me. they literally fought over who was gonna get to get them from me. it was fun. they always love it when we come back, 'cause we always have tons (literally) of 'out there' gringo stuff...clothes, antiques, wierd, etc.

so, friend, with out wandering farther from the mark of your question, give a crap what others think...it aint important. be you and enjoy yourself. if you're being a looser, it wont be because you're wearin cammo or safari gear.

enjoy the motherland.

Entiende I understand what your saying dwmte, but i thought that perhaps with the high military and FARC action goin on, if i was to wear army coloured clothing it would make me stand out (more than the blonde hair, tattoos and stretched lobes do)

i understand... i don't wear camo normally... and i've never worn jungle camo with the exception of my military time. it's understandable that one wouldn't want to be seen as a military, para, guerilla, etc. so for myself, i'd avoid it. as for other's, the choice is theirs. my point is that if your comfortable in shorts, wear em.

i did, do and will. i guess no body pays a mind to me for my age. i don't look the 'young man' because i'm not ( don't really know what difference it makes) i just wear what temperature dictates as comfortable and functional. the last time living in llano grande, i can't recall anyone noting the fact that i wore burmudas...when it was hot, i did. when not, i didn't; that simple. i never found colombians to be of such short wit as to make unimportant things important. they're a wonderfully practical and pragmatic people and do what feels right. in the cities, sure, mode dictates a lot of what they think and do. pity. but they in the cities are torn from their roots and try to be/do what style or social convention dictates. again pity. get outta the cities and 'colombia' prevails and the folks are relaxed and natural and dont give a tinker's damn what you do within the bounds of civility.

so, jebediah, just make yourself comfortable and don't offend folks on real issues and you're gonna be fine.

The official Colombiana wardrobe is low slung jeans and a halter top.
I never see them dress any other way. I was looking in my girlfriend's closet and jeez, that's all she has. And a mountain of shoes, of course.
Not that I'm complaining but whatever happened to dresses and slacks?

Jebediah says on Jan 7, 2006, 15:20:

Slacks? Does anyone actually call them slacks anymore?

of course, jebediah.... they're what you wear when all your dresses are dirty...

boy...if hairy legs were a no no.... what would you do with all the lovely colombian ladies who don't shave their legs. one of my wife's sisters, now about 38 still hasn't shaved her legs and she's a doll.

my wife was about the same age--here in the u.s.--before she started. so, don't worry about the hairy legs. actually, if this were really some 'hangin' taboo, they'ld have done away with me years ago.

come on i wore my camo shorts the whole time i was there, and thats pretty much all i wore, shorts and flip flops, no need for shirts. i also sport a mohawk. So i stuck out...no biggie. if anything people were interested in me as opposed to trying to take advantage of me.

one thing i did notice, i think my belt is considered female since i saw alot of them in the salon windows, but it has a nice sized skull belt buckle so i wasnt sure what exactly everyone was looking at. i know the buckle was a hit because people were always trying to trade me crap for it.

dwmte says on Jan 10, 2006, 16:55:

...quite a handle you got there, st33lr4t... know what you mean about the folks wanting to trade you for your clothes. when i got back and was living in the mountains, i wore my desert camo pants, shirt and jacket a lot. it got so bad amongst my friends, i thought two of them were gonna 'fist a cuffs' over who got to trade me outta them. i was in the driver seat...i got to name the deal; however, it was clear that if i didn't make a deal with one of them, i was gonna die! just kidding...

Camo is in..... Just saw it this morning on Muy Buenos Dias. During the fashon show which is a daily feature there it was. A hot chica wearing a Camo Print skirt. So I guess it's official now and in any case it made me remember this thread.

I still try to wear shorts every day but I am still refused admission to many govt offices. Was refused admission to the radio station's offices to set up our new radio ads the other day even! 3 cheers to the manager of the disco Canalon in Sabaneta. When they wouldn't let me in the other night I asked for the manager. I guess he could tell when shorts had 'deep pockets' and he let me in.
