I was reading a newspaper article in the Houston Chronicle tonight about the release of a Texas man and a Monterrey man who had been kidnapped from a hunting ranch near Nuevo Laredo. Buried in the article was this interesting tidbit: "In the past two years, 58 Americans have been kidnapped in the Nuevo Laredo area, and 24 remain missing." I wonder how many Americans are aware of this fact? If there were 24 Americans missing in Colombia I'd think we'd be hearing about it pretty much non stop. Colombians certainly raise a good point when they complain that their country is not treated by the media the same as other countries. How would Mexican tourism be affected if these kinds of kidnapping statistics were widely publicized in the US? It makes me wonder how many kidnappings there are in all of Mexico if this is just the Nuevo Laredo area, scene of a cartel drug war right now.

I've been contemplating a move back to Texas the last year but all the trouble in Mexico lately gives me second thoughts. It is nice to live in U.S. but also be close to another country. UC, just in the last month I've seen a HUGE New York Times story about violence and kidnapping in Mexico and the Los Angeles Times did a big piece about rich Mexicans fleeing Tijuana and moving to San Diego because of the massive kidnapping problem there.

In Guadalajara, many Americans still move there daily and no reports from Americans being harassed or sequestered from friends who currently reside in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Petty crime exists but thats normal for any big city! Look at Miami where I live ! LOL That word from folks on the streets daily BTW... "Wait a minute. What did you just say?
