don't mean to be soggy toast, but dear ingrid is starting to put a bad taste in my mouth.........

all this rubbish about france. fine, she has the sentiments of the people and the political powers that be, but not one 'frog' hand nor finger was raised to save her sweet, suffering ass.

personally...and i mean this....there's one huge apology forthcoming that's due to colombia, and the u.s (in part) for her rescue. most specially, all of colombia who prayed for her during her captivity and put their lives on the line for her's and the other captives release.

she just might have closed the door on her welcome in colombia for this inconscienable action of hers. we'll have to wait and see.

Yea, I am concerned with her behavior in France too. I happen to speak French too, so I have been following her statements as closely as possible, and though she HAS often mentioned her gratitude on numerous occasions to Colombia and its Colombian army “heroes (while in Paris), we will still have to wait to see what she says and does further. I believe she may be returning to Colombia for the 20th of July festivities. It has been particularly sad for me to witness how wacked some of the statements of their family have been over time, even her own son Lorenzo said to France 24 (their equivalent of CNN) that he did not “…believe that the FARC are torturing my Mom. Boy, you should have seen my commentary to that TV-station back then.

On RCN last night she made the statement, on landing and standing on the runway in Paris, "France is my home and you (the French people) are my family." Such statements will not and do not support her politically in Colombia.

She also thanked the French people/government for saving her life. Gee, I though it was members of the Colombian military. She can NEVER give enough thanks to the Colombian military. After all, it was not 100 French solders armed with day-old baguettes or pain Parisian who freed her. Oh well, what do I know.

Married? No, divorce about /910 years ago-husband is French and they met while she was in college or shortly after she was graduated in France.

It's always been like this with Ingrid. You either hate her or love her, there's no grey zone there. I thought her critics would be pleased to know how much the guerrilla disliked her because in all those years of captivity, being chained, very ill, losing her will even to live NEVER played their game. They could not break her will. I have no idea why people hate her so much and yet adore and worship another strong-willed politician, like Uribe. Wrong...Colombians seem to be changing their mind about Ingrid, her popularity rate was 70% as she stepped out of the helicopter, fresh as a morning glory, with words of praise and gratitude for COLOMBIA, the Colombian army and soldiers and President Uribe.

She's a remarkable woman whose reputation has meticulously been worked on by the Uribista supporters, the Colombian media to make her look like a fool, "una irresponsable", almost a criminal to remove any responsibilty from the shoulders or the Beloved Messiah for her kidnapping. Yet, she was a Senator with the highest voting account ever in Colombia, her party and her work was just getting started and even if she was not loved by everybody she had enough support and recognition to move ahead as a politician.

Interesting article on Ingrid Betancourt.
-----------

Ingrid Betancourt: What Fearless Is
The news Wednesday that Ingrid Betancourt and other hostages had been freed in Colombia made me think of my meetings over the years with her. Talking with her was inspiring, and also a bit scary. She was so determined to combat wrongdoing, and so heedless of the consequences of doing so, that you almost knew something bad was going to happen. But she survived it (that's not a surprise, either) and now she's out and her friends rejoice.

I first met Ingrid in December 1999 at my office at the Washington Post. She wanted to talk about the rampant corruption that was destroying political life in her home country of Colombia. She brought along a stack of documents, and we spent several hours going over them and preparing a memo that I could share with my Post colleagues in Latin America, who might be able to pursue the story.

As we talked that day nearly a decade ago, Ingrid began to share her personal story. She had grown up in Paris as the daughter of Colombia's ambassador to France. After university (where her friends included Dominique de Villepin, later France's prime minister, who was the person who had sent her my way) she had married a French diplomat. She could have returned to an easy life of power and wealth in Bogota -- if she had been willing to make her peace with the corrupt politicians who ruled the country.

But Ingrid doesn't do compromise. She began a political career back home as a reformer, and after she was elected to the Colombian House of Representatives in 1994, she began asking questions about an arms deal that had involved big commission payments to prominent political figures. Then she began investigating whether Colombia's drug lords had financed the campaign of President Ernesto Samper, who was ruling the country at the time. Samper was eventually charged and tried by the Colombian congress. (Colombia's Chamber of Deputies later cleared the charges.)

Ingrid began receiving death threats in 1996, as she was pursuing her campaign against Samper. One arrived in a crude letter in June 1996, with a warning that her family would pay a price for her actions. Inside the envelope was graphic documentation of what that threat might mean.

"There was a Polaroid of the body of a child, torn apart," she told me in one of our conversations. I asked if she meant that the photo had been torn apart. "No," she said. "The child was torn apart."

She evacuated her children from Colombia the day after she received that letter. But she didn't stop her campaign against the drug mafias and corrupt politicians. She kept talking to journalists about the corruption that afflicted her country. And she wrote a book, "La Rage Au Coeur," which became a bestseller in France when it was published in 2001. (It was translated into English in 2002 as "Until Death Do Us Part: My Struggle to Reclaim Colombia.")

Ingrid's friends worried that she was taunting people who were killers, and warned her to be careful. But as I said, she was not a person who was capable of compromise. I remember talking with her in Paris in 2001, when she was promoting her book. She brushed tears out of her eyes as she remembered that horrific threat to dismember her children, but she said she wouldn't think of easing her crusade.

"There is always a difficult question of why we do things in life, especially things that are dangerous and difficult," she told me. But it wasn't in her to stop, or pull back.

She decided to run for president of Colombia in 2002, as a way of taking her crusade for justice to the country as a whole. During the campaign, she decided that she would go to a demilitarized zone in the jungle and try to meet with the FARC guerrillas, who had been waging an insurgency that was devastating the country. That was typical of her--to meet the scariest of people, face to face, in the belief that by her raw courage, she could transform the situation. Many in Colombia warned her not to go, but she wouldn't listen. She was kidnapped by the FARC on Feb. 23, 2002.

Now she has been freed, and returned to what we like to call "normal life." But anyone who thinks she won't keep battling for justice -- anyone who thinks that the years in captivity have somehow softened her, or blunted her spirit -- doesn't know Ingrid Betancourt. These are the people who change history -- the ones who refuse to bend, and instead make events bend around them. We should watch for the next chapters in the story of this remarkable woman, who with luck will be a political force in Latin America for many years to come.

Aztec, she was on her way to a political rally amongst her supporters in FARC-controlled territory. There was a point she tried to prove, but got herself kidnapped instead. She has NEVER had any FARC sympathies but she was not going to let them intimidate her from joining with her constituents in Caguán. It was her inexperience and her pride that put her in that situation.

Simon....that would be very unfair and one-dimensional of me. I aknowledge and give credit to Uribe for having pulled off this rescue with such flying colors. See, it didn't hurt one litle bit!

What I just said about NOT having that much problem with Mr. Uribe himself, but mostly with his supporters...

It has been pretty mainstream Colombian thing to bash Ingrid, just because that's what everybody else has been doing too. You hear it on TV, as Uribe's popularity grew and he himself put the blame on Ingrid only for her predicament how all this muttering about Ingrid just got louder and louder. She has been blamed of everything possible, of being secretely in cahoots with the FARC, of having a secret FARC lover, the gossip had her reputation lower than dirt....

but such are the hearts and souls of Colombian people, she steps out of that helicopter in total control of her emotions with words of gratitude and relief and thanking her GOD and the VIRGIN first of all, Uribe and the military next...and suddenly she is loved by everybody.

She flies to France to reunite with her children and thank Sarkozy and the French people of NEVER LETTING ANYBODY FORGET her captivity, for putting on pressure on the FARC, or their relentless efforts for trying to get her free and tongues start to wag again....now it's bad Ingrid again, not patriotic enough, not grateful enough.

Gods....people, walk that proverbial mile in her shoes before you start putting her down again.

I think Gator's comment spells it out quite clearly, especially with the capitalization of the word "never." She could spend the rest of her life giving thanks to Uribe/the Colombian military/and the US and certain people on this site would still complain that she is not appreciative enough.

And the logic that we have to kill all of our "enemies" is both naive and dangerous. You know the one you hate, you look more like him every day! Funny that the hate one feels for the enemy often causes him/her to act in a manner that is equally despicable.

Good thread to read guys. Again, I am only an observer and for now take an undecided position. So far, she sounds like she is a driven individual. It would be interesting to see how she emotionally copes with returning to Colombia.

In regards to anyone who has been through what she has been through, I really would not expect any of her actions or words to be in "synch" (sp) with what would be considered appropriate. She has been cut off from the flow for a long enough time now - where she will more than likely step on some sensitive toes. She may still be attempting to grasp the whole idea that this is real! It is not uncommon for a person to go through what she did to feel as if they are in a dream like state and just going through the motions.
Add all the media and politics - S**t!! I'd be taking Ativan, Valium and Xanax! jejeje...

Kitty is curious if this traumatic experience will make her more callous or more sensitive....hmmm

Either way, until she recovers, I plan on not taking anything she does with more than a grain of sand, cause she is not thinking clearly and will not be for a long time to come. I hope she takes at least a one year break from media.

Never heard of that song or lyrics, I simply disagree with all that mumbo jumbo nonsense. I hope she recovers from all the trauma she went through.

I do not think it is any stretch to say that certain people on this post hate the FARC. Not a real shocker, and the FARC have done a lot to deserve such sentiment.

huskie unfortunately assumed that I was talking about her feelings for Ingrid, when in actuality I was making a general statement about the situation with the FARC and the methods used to deal with them (something that Ingrid was involved in, dialog/negotiation, and has been criticized for). Sorry for the confusion, and sorry if anyone was offended or felt like I was targeting them with the comment.

Click on blocked and that will take care of you seeing my posts or comments. I strongly encourage you to do that, and maybe we can stop being at each other's throat.

" I strongly encourage you to do that, and maybe ?we? can stop being at each other's throat"???????!!!!!!

You can put me on ignore dear, because you are delusional!

Aztec, you are right, if you read alot of real stories of interest here on PBH and weed through the garbage, you notice that alot of members are delusional, sarcastic, and egotistical in their opinions, as if their opinions and statements are the only ones that are correct. Most good, real life members are not allowed to disagree, without getting their a$$ chewed off
