Donating to Colombia

My mom, God bless her soul, has left behind 14 industrial sewing machines...the ones that are used in factories making clothes, etc. In addition, we have countless threads and an enormous stock of materials (everything from cotton, linen to vinyl and leather). I've had no luck getting rid of it here in Canada. So I was told to send it to a foreign country. Well, Colombia immediately came to mind. So can anyone send me any contact info as to who I can donate all this stuff to? Thanks in advance for any leads.

You don't mind the cost of sending it?

I know a lady in Pereira who would love it...

My mom too has four industrial sewing machines and I cannot give them away here in the US. No one wants them. We even tried to give them to a shop. I did search the internet awhile back and found one organization that took them, but cannot think of the name. I would try that and see if you can find it. We do not want to pay for shipping as these things are very heavy. Good luck, we may end up giving them to Purple Heart or Am-Vets if they will take them.

Well, I was hoping that whoever wanted it would pay for the shipping. I imagine it would be very costly for me to incur the shipping charges. But, then again, I'm desperate to get rid of it all. The longer it sits around, the more it depreciates.

NataliaV, yes pls. let me know the name and I will inform you as well if I find anything out. I'll try Purple Heart or Am-Vets (they are in the States, no?)

La_Mona, can you send me a pm with the location in Pereira so I can price out how much it will cost me to send them all there? Thx.

There are a lot of Training Centers and Universities in Soacha and other areas that would probably be happy to have the sewing machines. My Fiance is a professional seamstress/Artist (she already has three machines) and resides in Soacha. I will speak to her tonight about this. Maybe she knows of a
place that is willing to pay the shipping.

Ps. Nicaragua and El Salvador are places of greater need, and your charity would be greatly appreciated by such a poor people.

Thanks DavidM. I will google the other countries and get some contacts but I would prefer to send all these things through people I can trust and, hopefully, the recipients will utilize these machines for their livelihood. Nevertheless, I'm sure my mom will be watching over her prize possessions wherever they end up in the world.

Maybe if you get a reputable charity that wants them, they could talk to the airlines (shipping cos) to see if they would donate the shipping.

Regarding Colombia Progresa - It is reputable. I don't know if they take items such as sewing machines. However, I am close friends with a board member who leads the efforts in the Washington, D.C. office of Colombia Progresa. I will stand behind this organization.

There is a a group that is supported by some nuns somewhere in Bogota where they teach single moms from displaced families how to sew for industry.

. I'll see what I can find out for you.

GIB - your organization sounds good. Always trust Catholic nuns. Another idea is to contact Catholic Charities.

Nope it's a different group..

The group I know of is the Fundacion Miquelina, that is run by "Las Adoratrices". They've managed to partner with vendor of outdoor sports gear and use the factory as a training ground and starter place for single mothers who don't have employable skills.

It looks like a very well established program.
