dollar dropping or peso rising?

is it that the dollar is going down and the US is getting worse, or is Colombia getting better and it's peso is getting stronger?

The US dollar has been weak, and in the recent past the Colombian peso was one of, if not the, strongest currencies in the world. The British Pound was at a 30 year high against the dollar, and the Euro was at an all-time high against the dollar. But, most people who know a lot more about it than I ever will, expect the peso to crash eventually, or at least weaken significantly.

it's all based on speculation, right now Colombia is the darling of emerging markets, but nothing has really changed here in Colombia, the fundamentals are still the same, it's speculative, perception........

The Canadian economy is doing fairly well. The Colombian peso has stayed roughly the same in Canadian dollars, the US dollar is dropping. So both. The Economist Big Mac Index to me shows the folly of judging a nation by its currency.

China has been low? I think you meant it is maintained low, they do not have a free floating currency, it is pegged to a basket of currencies and not allowed to move much from there.

I don`t care weather the Dollar is down or the cp Peaso is up all I know is that it now costs me $25.00 to $28.00 more than it did to withdraw cp 500.000 from the ATM.

Bufalo, to be true this is definitely not the best site for financial information. They only see what they want to see, and that is Colombia down the drain. For what reason? Beats me, I have been around this site for a few years and still the same people are always calling for doom and gloom. For the time being it seems that the peso has stabilized at hovering just under the 2000 mark, most financial forecasts in the country expect to stay there until the end of the year.

Just and example on what has been advised around here:

"under my crude calculations the COP should be around 2550 or so against the dollar as other currencies in the world have seen at least a 10% correction against the dollar. The COP did not? Still holding at the bottom end. Just like a rubber band you can only pull back so far before it snaps. If it does snap you won't see a COP/$ retracement to 2600 but to 3100 in my opinion which isn't worth a lot I have to admit."

manjar says on Jul 24, 2007, 14:06:

When I went to Colombia for the first time in 97 the peso was 1200 to the dollar. It was almost 3,000 when I was there in March of 2005 and 2300 in May of 2006. There is talk of a new Canadian, Mexican and American currency called the AMERO like the Euro. King Bush seems to be a player in this. The Republicans in the US are selling the country while the Democrats want to give it away. We are awash in illegal immigrants callled cheap labor while our US factories has been shut down and sent south and east. I don't like any of it but I see trouble for the US long term. This Amero thing or one single currency for Canada, US and Mexico does not seem so odd when El Salvador, Ecuador and Panama already use the Yankee greenback......stay tuned for more to come...

GIB, maybe you could tell us why if you knew that the government wanted a strong peso were you actually saying that the peso would reach even 3100 two years ago? Were you misinformed back then, if so how do you know you are not misinformed now.

Brians says on Jul 24, 2007, 16:35:

A lot the inflows creating this strong peso is really tied to the vast global liquidity. I have been waiting for this to reverse. I thought it was happening in Feb then again last month. Now look only at $250 bilion in LBO money coming to the market in the next few weeks with no buyers. The Junk Bond market is seeing an earthquake on the level of a 8.0 as Bill Gross said today. These thigs are all tied together. Believe me when this liquidity reverses so will the Peso. I beleive we may be seeing it again but if not I will keep waiting. Credit created from credit always ends horribly. I still love Colombia long term but over the coming months I do not see how the level of Peso buying can or will continue. Too many issues worldwide that will start to effect it's rise.

BAQ says on Jul 24, 2007, 17:16:

I will repeat what I said a few months ago in another post. I remember PRESIDENT ARIBE saying back in 2004 when the peso was at 2800 to 1 USD that HE, repeat HE, the president of Colombia thought this exchange rate was CORRECT FOR THE COLOMBIAN ECONOMY and BUSH did his famous YEP, I AGREE thing.

So my question to the great President Aribe and the great President Bush is WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS DOING besides standing there with stupid smiley faces while you give each other hand jobs !

You are screwing with BOTH economies and neither of you knows what the hell you are doing.

Semper Fidelis !

Man Tequila says on Jul 24, 2007, 21:46:

There has been zero talk of the Amero in Canada. The people here would never accept it.

Bueno_Pues - That's because you live in Texas, home of wide open spaces and very little zoning. Everyone knows that Texas housing didn't appreciate nearly as rapidly as most places in the U.S. It appreciated like it should - along the lines of income and population growth.

Re the Amero - There's been zero talk in the U.S., too. I Googled the word and all the references are from the organization(s) promoting the idea. Not gonna happen.
