dog attacks

I was curious about what the law says if attacked by a dog in colombia. For example in the u.s. If I'm attacked by a dog then I have every right to kill that dog in order to stop the attack. Is it the same in colombia?

Also in the u.s. dog owners are responsible for their dog if it attacks or bites a person. Is that also true in colombia?

Uhmm... I don't think so. I was attacked by a freaking monkey that was chained to a tree and nobody did anything about it. Like nothing had happened.

Of course I have to admit I was throwing bottle caps at the poor thing but still. You would think my parents would've raised hell about it, or at least take me to a doctor.

Nope, nobody even flinched.

Even if you kill the attack dog in Colombia, the owner of the dog will most likely put a bullet in you. Colombians are like that.

Like Vic mentioned, the laws are almost the same... The administering of them is more laid back I'm sure...

Article 108-L. If a potentially dangerous dog attacks another dog, the owner shall be punished by the competent municipal authority with a fine of up to two (2) times the minimum monthly wage and will be obliged to pay for all the damage to the mascot (dog). If the dog has rabies will proceed to euthanasia confiscation and slaughter of animals by the authorities that the town councils designated for that purpose.

Article 108-M. If a potentially dangerous dog attacks a person inflicting permanent injuries of any kind, we will proceed to euthanasia confiscation and slaughter of animals by the authorities that the town councils designated for that purpose.

I had the misfortune that My dog was walking with some friends on our road.. A man who was afraid of dogs came up the other way. I suggested that he wait with me for a few minutes. He declined, picked up some stones and went up towards Wrinkles. My "little" baby does not accept aggresion at all. Zero tolerence. When the other person started to throw the stones Wrink caught his hand and bit his wrist. Sort of a preemptive strike.
We subsequently had a inspection from an authority at the local health department, we had a visit from a representitive of the police department, we them had to appear at a municipal office to give a deposition, then returned to find the outcome. We had to pay for the man being unable to work for 11 days (60,000) that settled the matter.

I was wondering because yesterday I was on a nature hike with some friends and my wife when 3 dogs surrounded me and my wife on the verge of attack. The owner was running after the dogs yelling for them to stop so I just stood there real stil with my wife while the man was trying to get his dogs under control. Still, one of the dogs managed a bite at my wife's leg. It didn't cut her but ripped her pants open.

I think if I would have had a knife or machete with me I would have taken a stab at the dog that bit her during that moment. Even though the owner was basically right there.

This is hilarious. Colombians in general don't seem to give a shit about any laws. The laws apply to the other guy, not them.

mranderson says on Mar 25, 2008, 10:38:

vic- yea a stick is a good idea too. In fact my friend told me I should grab one in case of dogs but I honestly couldn't find one anywhere. The forest was picked clean. The only thing I could find were twigs or branches that were just too big to carry. I didn't think it was really that much of a threat since none of my friends grabbed any sticks either.

The dogs were not dobermans, german sheppards, or pitbulls but they looked pretty dangerous to me.. Especially with 3 of them.

If not living here, you can be a wuss of a man and run away but if you live here and have property and assets, you will pay.

mranderson says on Mar 25, 2008, 11:06:

what do you think an owner of a dog would do if I killed his dog that was attacking me right in front of him. Even though he was trying to stop the dog?

Bill Turley says on Mar 25, 2008, 11:31:

If you ever see a mature Bull Mastiff that is upset with you, forget a stick, forget pepper spray, a machete would leave an injury to him but provoke an all out attack ( Bad News). My baby can ignore pain. I have seen him jump through a 3 strand electric fence, willing to take the shock in order to get to the other side. With a stick he would grab it and either take it away from you, throw you to the ground or crunch it in two. Remember this baby is 200 lb all muscle, he can clear 5 ft if he tries to. However he loves people, try to make friends and he will be your buddy.

I would take out a dog just for looking funny.

Why wait for the dog to bite you, your wife, or child 'cause the owner is irresponsible?

I HATE IRRESPONSIBLE dog owners 'cause they think everyone should love their dog.... especially in the states.

This one time... I was jogging down the street minding my own business and this dog came running up to me, snapping at my leg, I stopped running kicked him across the street as the onwer came running up. He started screaming at me because I kicked his dog, and I told him if you would have CHAINED YOUR F'ING DOG UP, I NEVER WOULD HAVE KICKED HIM!!!

Hope the wife is okay.

Medellin
I respect your feelings.
I would however caution you not to try to kick a mature bullmastiff. My little friend would probably dodge the kick and grab the back of your ankle. Remember he is a skinny 210lbs. He can jump more than 5 ft vertical, in the heat of a dog fight I have seen him clear 6'4". These are very fast, agile and strong animals. They more resemble a Mountain Lion than most other dogs. He is not a noisey yapping type of dog, if he plans on an attack you would not have much warning. I do have him behind a chain link fence and a 3 strand electric fence.

Colombian dogs understand the meaning of a rock. Any time you are approached by an aggressive dog just pick up a stone, or fake picking up a stone. The dog will usually run away. My Colombian fiance taught me this.

It even works in Costa Rica. While traveling alone in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica,I was attacked by a dog. I just faked picking up a rock and the dog scrambled to get away.

I guess it's a Latin thing.

Bill Turley says on Mar 25, 2008, 16:29:

Don't try to get into my car without my OK. By the way he is my constant copmpanion.

Tomtom, have you considered your novia applying for a passport instead of a cedula to speed up the process?

My gf managed to get a passport while waiting for a lost cedula to be replaced. The Colombian passport number is set up to be identical to the recipient's cedula number. I'm sure this would serve as valid ID for the bank, and it's issued on the spot or within a couple of days at most.

pedro says on Mar 25, 2008, 19:05:

Speaking of cedula hassles. During the last election, my gf was issued a convocation to work at a local polling station. She ended up being one of the most important officials that certifies everything for that location.

In spite of that responsibility, she didn't have the right to cast a vote herself. Reason being, her cedula was lost. It's been 9 months so far and I don't think she's received the new one yet.

All the street dogs I encountered in Villavo were very skitish. I think they were just in survival mode - and knew at any given time a taxi driver might try and run them over.

Bull mastiffs are cool. You can wrestle with them and really be physical, and not have to worry about hurting them. They are very good natured and extremely intellegent. The two reasons I wouldn't own one are: I can't afford the food, and I don't like the slobber. They also have a life expectency of about 10 years, maybe less .... and it is pretty hard to lose a dog you love. I had a German Shepard for 13 years. I had to put him down 2 years ago, and it still bothers me.

I have a blue heeler now (Australian Cattle Dog). Beavis is pretty smart, great personality. He's a great catter too! Here is a picture of him posing very serious.

An additional comment from Somondoco on this topic. The comment about Bull Mastiffs eating a lot, not true. My baby eats about 14 kilos a month, with food available all the time. Extreamly intellegent is no joke. He listens to conversations between my wife and I and reacts to them. If I as her if she is ready, Wrinkles thinks we are ready to GO and he is. Another word he reacts to is coming he runs to look and see who is coming
