Does Foto Japon upload photos?

When I go to Colombia next month to visit family I want to give them a digital camera, in part so I can hopefully see photos of my nieces and nephews throughout the year when I can't be there. However, my family is not very computer savy. Does anyone know if Foto Japon (or any other places), will upload photos to the web for people? I know foto japon prints photos, and will make CDs, but not sure about uploading... I wish/hope there is a place where they can just go in with the camera and for a small fee get the photos uploaded to the web. Anyone know of such a place or have any ideas? Thanks much!

Just one
Just one computer friendly user in your family will do the job fine, there is just a little investment on you part, by registering a domain name and hosting, the using one of many tools, open source software where if you like the product you can donate.

You can hold the admin status and assign accounts to different family member so they upload their pictures.

Here a couple of samples.

But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am

But you are computer savy. Sure it is simple as dragging and dropping files when using an ftp program, but even that might be too much.

Then of course to conserve space and bandwidth a bit of jpeg compression and resampling should be applied. So there is a bit more computer knowledge needed.

what i do is.. when i want to upload fotos for me friends in the states to see, i take my flash card out of my digital camera and take the card reader(USB port) to ANY internet cafe, they should have one or two computer w/ USB port. Just plug the sucker in and you can see the flashcard as "another drive" on my computer. From that point, just upload the foto like you would normally from a PC.

No need to goto a foto shop, they won't upload for you, but they will save it on a CD if you want.

Thanks, now for a decent cafe... Thanks for the suggestions. Getting a USB card reader to make uploading at an internet cafe easy is a good idea. Also, like someone said I only need one person to learn how to upload. Resizing I think would be a bit much since only two people have ever used a computer and they just learned how to email a few months ago, but I could probably teach them how to use an easy site like MSN spaces that does the resizing for you. However, where they live (about 1.5 hours north of Bogotá) the internet speed sucks in all the cafes, I can barely stand to use it for emailing and can't imagine how trying to upload photos would be. But I could tell them to come to a internet cafe in Bogotá for uploading.

Are all the internet cafes in Bogotá about the same? In the Chico neighborhood in Bogotá (which is where I stay my first and last night to be closer to the airport) does anyone recommend a good internet cafe? That would have USB, decent speed, helpful people, economico, etc?

www.fotozoom.com This is a very good website where you can upload pictures and order the prints, they will delivery them to anyplace in Colombia. The size of the pictures don't matter just upload 10 at the time and you will not have any problem, you will be able to see them too from anywhere in the world.

Be careful some of the USB card readers require a USB mass storage driver, most Internet Cafes will already have this driver as part of the OS but very occasionally they won't.

If you want a nice JPEG file reducer look for an older version of a shareware program called JPEG Optimizer. The program is so small it fits on a floppy and it does not write anything to the PC registry, which means it can be run from the floppy drive. I will be glad to send you a copy by E-mail if you like. Just PM me.

It is super simple to use, you open the program, drag the jpeg file to the desktop of the program and it will open the photo along with a second pane showing the compressed photo, there is a slider at the top of the screen and you simply drag the slider to the left to compress more. The whole thing is in real time and you can see if it is too compressed, so simply drag the slider a bit to the right and then save the file.
