does bad credit effect getting your visa?

My fiance just found out that he has a debt of 1500 dollars from singing for a cellphone for his ex's mom. She never paid it, so it is on his name. We are applying for the fiance visa. do you think this effects him getting the visa even though its not his fault?

and,... no.
at least to my inquiries.
But, I wouldn't be sending notice to the institution or person to whom the money is owed, that he/she was planning to leave the country. Know what I mean?
I have heard that, for example, if you owed someone money, and they wanted to file some sort of lawsuit... then possibly that would mean detention. The lawsuit, that is. But, I think, if not a lawsuit or something similar.... not problem. The embassy isn't that concerned about the person's finances, but are concerned about criminal or civil matter.
Likely, some of the veterans here can further expound.

Where do we go from here?

No, a minor debt, which this is, will have no effect as long as the required visa financial support requirements are met.

FYI-the USA does NOT have debtor prison system and you do NOT go to prison for failure to pay a debt. If it was a bankruptcy filing and the court ordered the individual not to flee the court's jurisdiction than that is a horse of a different color.

Um Gator one small exception to your debtor prison system statement. Don't pay your child support and you may well find yourself in "debtors prison" .
