You used to need a special visa in order to get married in Colombia and that was a bit of a hassle. You don't need it any more - your novia should go to the local notaria and find out what they want from you. They're all different - some will want translations and apostilles while others won't.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

As Long as You Have... all the required paper work there should be no problems. As UCowboy said find the notary you intend to used and find out what he/she will require. Follow his requirements to the letter.

Visit the Colombian consulate or embassy in the UK to get their advice.

You are Thinking Of... a Certificado de "Soltería: You must present a notarized, written statement, executed by a family member or close friend who has known you for more than ten years, stating that you have never been married. If this is not in Spanish, this statement must be translated into Spanish by an official translator and must have an Apostille. As far as I know there is no specific form.

If you are divorced this is not need but a translated copy of the divorce decree with an Apostille will be needed. I would have your novia find the notary you intend to use and be guided by what he advises. If it is a Catholic Church weeding it becomes much more complicated.

Certificado de Soltería I got married 5 years ago in Colombia and I am British, to prove that I was single I went to the local registry office and got a marriage licence this was enough proof. You can see if this still applies, also if you do get married in a Catholic Church you and your novia will probably have an interview. They will want to see proof of everything and I had problems with my baptism documentation because in Colombia unlike England everything is stamped and my baptism certificate was just a card with the date on and that was it. I had to persuade the priest that I was baptised and that the CofE was a bit more relaxed about things like that than Catholic Church in Colombia. Also they keep all the documentation so if you need anything get a copy.

Similar to shopping for a notario/a shopping for a priest can yield a great degree of variation as to what is actually required.

What lpdiver said. Requirements vary. The docs I had to produce:

* Birth certificate issued within the last 3 months
* Certificate of Unmarried State; my local (Canadian) gov't marriage office provides such a certificate for $50. Other Notarios wanted two letters, much as described by Gator. This replaced my divorce papers.
* Photocopy of the picture/personal information page of my passport

All docs must be authenticated in some way. Apostillo applies ONLY to countries that are Hague signatories for a particular regulation about documentation. If the UK has not signed the Hague treaty for this particular regulation, more extensive authentication is required. The Hague thing is confusing; don't assume that the UK signed this documentation clause (Canada has not, though we have signed various other parts of the Hague treaty).

Find a cooperative Notario, and get all that individual's requirements.

If you're both in the UK, why not get married there? Had my fiancee and I been able to marry in Canada, there requirements were much less. You can always have another marriage in Colombia.
