Depends Where are you going to visit? Are you arriving from the USA and not another country?

from.... gator....i'm going to mainly be in bogota, but am taking weekend trips to cartagena, boyaca, and villa leyva (i think those are the only other places i'm going...my boyfriend is organizing it all so i'm not too sure). as for where i'm coming from, i live in the middle east so i won't be coming in from the US. why do you ask, does it make a difference?

Vaccines If you plan to go to the following regions you should get vaccinated against Malaria:

Department of Cesar (Capital Valledupar)
Cali (there´s been some cases brought from small towns to the local hospitals)

If you plan to go to Leticia (amazon region) you should get a yellow fever innoculation.

For the other regions of the country you don´t need inoculations.

Malaria in Cali There's a few cases of malaria in Cali, true, but the persons have not been infected in Cali but rather in Buenventura and surrounding areas on the Pacific coast. But do watch out fot those nasty mosquitos: not only malaria but they also carry dengue, and even if it's not life-threatening for a healthy young adult it'll spoil your holiday for a tenday or so.

yes and no http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Heroes/Manuel_Patarroyo.html

There's a vaccine against malaria, but I don't know if it is produced commercially. What's recommended is malaria prophylaxis.

"An update from the University of Oxford in Drug Safety 8(4) 1993 stated that a careful risk-benefit analysis is required to balance the risk of acquiring potentially serious malaria against the risk of harm from the prophylactic agent. Chloroquine and Proguanil) have an excellent safety record in the recommended dosages. Recent publicity has been given to side effects of Mefloquine which is used extensively in areas of resistance to Chloroquine and Proguanil.(Luzzi.GA Peto TE), Chloroquine-150mgs(base)-2 tablets/week."

"The development of resistance to familiar anti-malarials has created confusion both for Doctors and travellers as to what is the best and most effective anti-malarial to take and which areas of the World require special precautions. Further difficulties are created by the serious side-effects encountered on using the newer drugs. This review will endeavour to elucidate current areas of resistance and recommendations for prophylaxis and treatment. Great stress is given to the warning that no prophylaxis is foolproof and failures arise most commonly from not taking the drugs as prescribed. In particular they must be started 1 week before departure and continued for 4-6 weeks after leaving the malaria area. Any fever up to 12-18months after leaving a malaria area should arouse suspicion of malaria and be investigated accordingly. Appropriate advice must be sought prior to departure from a reputable travel advice centre"

I was thinking about the same, exactly, and have forwarded the question to another forum where I post regularly; these people are Colombians abroad and some of them pretty up to date on these things,

Malaria Vaccine and poster Teppar Not available yet-still being tested. The prophylactic is almost an area tyoe thing because it will depend upon the region you plan to visit. Two different types are recommended. The other catch is they usually require you to take several weeks before anticipated exposure.

One plus. Don't worry if you are only visting areas abouve 800 mts. like Bogotá or Medellin, there will be no exposure. Yellow fever is needed for certain areas. Because I have been to Leticia and Santa Marta east I keep current with my Yellow Fever vac. DD is right I have had Dengue twice and it was no fun. Not really life threatening but like a bad case of the flu.

TEPPAR, The reason I asked where you were coming from was not that Colombia would not allow entry but there are a fair number of middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and others that require a vaccination to ENTER the country if you have BEEN TO a country (Colombia) where Yellow Fever is present. The really bad news is that there is no specific treatment for yellow fever. The good news from your post is you will not be travelling where either one is present.

malaria vaccine Some links for those still interested knowing what happened to Dr. Patarroyo and his malaria vaccine:

(the links cortesia de mis buenos amigos colombianos en el exterior)

Basically, the further testing of the vaccine in Gambia and Thailand did not confirm the fairly good success in Colombia. The Hospital San Juan de Dios in Bogotá where he was developing the vaccine went bankrupt and was invaded by the employees who hadn't received their salaries. Dr. Patarroyo is currently in Spain, but continues to work on his vaccine plus furthers research on uterine cancer, Aids, and other diseases.
