Hi guys,
I am going to Colombia at the end of February and need to know if I need a return ticket when entering the country on tourist visa. What was your own experience???
I am using a tourist visa only for the beginning but want to stay one year applying for student visa once I am there so, buying a return ticket is not really convenient for me.
I appreciate your help :-)

durito says on Jan 13, 2008, 16:06: It really just depends. Usually it's the airline that will check (though most don't), I've never heard of DAS asking at the airport (but they usually do when you extend it, though i've gotten an extentsion without one) I came in on tuesday on a one way ticket without any problem (COPA). I have flown with them before where they made sure I had a ticket out.

Robert Jorge says on Jan 13, 2008, 19:37: I never had them ask or check for return tickets at the airport. Though, if you get visa extensions like a poster said above, a requirement is copies of your return flight tickets. So, to get in and stay for less than 60 days, generally speaking and with a bit of luck, "no", you do not need return tickets. I emphasize the word luck and am just saying "probably". RAAAY says on Jan 13, 2008, 20:39: I've come in on a one way ticket with a tourist visa about six times in the past year..................never been asked for a return ticket..............Avianca said they required it so I always made an online reservation and then let it time out.............you can make the reservation without paying.........good for three days.............. .........Its useless to argue with ignorance 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Robert Jorge says on Jan 15, 2008, 20:27: That is strange elkfarmer, because showing return tickets for the tourist stamp extensions is a requirement by DAS. He who farts in church, sits in his own pew. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

mranderson says on Jan 16, 2008, 06:33: Continental airlines wouldn't let me buy a ticket without a return ticket unless I had a visa. Also DAS told me they required a copy of a return ticket to extend a tourist visa.

Robert Jorge says on Jan 16, 2008, 10:22: RAAAY illustrates a good point. It is Colombia, so the rules change dependant on which person you talk to, on what day, at what location, etc. He who farts in church, sits in his own pew. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

elkfarmer says on Feb 22, 2008, 07:22: When I enterented Colombia last October, I did not have to show my return ticket. I had a non refundable ticket ($700 USD) that was never used. Do not know if I would have been denied entry if I did not have it. I also did not need to show a ticket at DAS when renewing tourist visa. Have done so twice now at DAS.

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 22, 2008, 08:47: I don't know that the official rules are, but I have been to Colombia so many times I couldn't possibly keep count and I have NEVER been asked to show a return ticket. Granted, I am Colombian(dual citizen), but I always enter Colombia with US passport so technically enter as a tourist. Besides, most people travel with paperless e-tickets these days, so wouldn't be able to show a return ticket if asked.

tomtom33 says on Feb 22, 2008, 10:05: When I got an extension to my tourist VISA in Cartagena in 2003, I had to provide 2 copies of my return ticket to DAS among other things to get my 30-day extension. Like everything in life, that may now have changed.

tejasmarcos says on Feb 22, 2008, 16:47: the issue is with the airlines in the usa. they are on the hook for the immigration threat and can be heavily fined. therefore, they are the ones that require the return ticket. there are some loopholes strategies/solutions, but i have never tried. trying to walk a straight line on sour mash and cheap wine... 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

mranderson says on Feb 23, 2008, 11:14: Last year I had to give copies of my return e-ticket to das. Guess it has changed though...I don't know.
