Dissapointed

Just like to point out how dissapointed I was when travelling back home last summer. A few things I saw that just bemused me (for wany of a better word)...can anyone tell me why we have an Avenue named Roosevelt in Cali?..(what was wrong with Bolivar, Ocampo, Rojas-Pinilla or another national figure?)...now I know that Roosevelt is held in high esteem for the role he played during the 2nd World War but why are we naming Avenues (and pretty big ones in a big city) after American presidents?
Another thing I saw in Pereira really got my blood racing as well....there I was sitting on the bus when the bus passes by a school that was being painted...but what really got my attention was the face they were painting on the mural.....another bleeding American president...this time it was Abe Lincoln that was the offending party..but what really took the biscuit was the fact that Lincoln's mug was about 10 times the size they had given to Bolivar...who suffered the indignancy of being relegated to the background of the mural....and I only knew it was him 'cause I asked the painter why they didn't painted Bolivar instead...then he prompted me to the inconspicous figure of poor Bolivar.....turning in his grave is the least he's doing.....

Exciting Damn,, I'm going back to Pereira just to see if the painting is realistic or more the Botero style.

Both Bush Presidents,, just think of it,, maybe a twin steeple structure.

I'm taking two cameras, just in case.

And unless they define which Roosevelt, they might be honoring the one whose administration assisted the "revolution" that led to the loss of Panama...

In this link Roosevelt is said to have accused the Colombian government of being a bunch of "irresponsible bandits." That "bandits" word again...just what Sr. Uribe calls the illegal groups today. ;-)

Are you kidding me? I mean, look at NYC: a poor copy of Cali.

Cali has the Roosevelt Avenue, so NY had to have a Roosevelt too.
Cali has the Pasoancho, so NY had to have a Broadway.
Cali has the Quinta, so NY had to have 5th Avenue.

Pretty soon, the Hudson river is going to be renamed Pance river.

cockney.... it's a very good question you broach...however, i think you would have greater success (for an answer) to approach the muralist than to voice your disgust here.

i too have some curiosity at monuments in colombia that i've seen, but i don't think i'd get any satisfaction by asking utopia, elmo, me desi or the rest of us as to why.

for the other poster remarking about the u.s.'s stealing of the panama canal.????? better read your canal history again. it's way different than you relate or believe.

sorry mario... they also landed/attacked in 1989. i was there the following week. a real mess.

as i read the history of the canal...it was the french who were building it, then, failing, ultimately the u.s. took over. now that reading goes back to the ice age of my life. so for an old fart, i probably remember it all backwards. i didn't know anything about the coup (was it?). thanks for the info.

cockney_colombian, you can post here at will... I do, and I don't let any commentary faze me; and when called for I may detract-modify my initial stance, as I hold flexibility as the virtue that prevents breakage.

The Roosvelt Ave I alwayst believed was named after Franklin D, not Ted. Franklin D. led the US thru not just WWII, but the depression years, I believe thru 4-terms (16 yrs).

I wish we had had a leader of Franklin's caliber. If you are knowledgable about this man, you would learn to admire his great spirit. Just before the War, he asked the US ambassador to give him a list with the cost of routine staples and groceries; and a list of what a working-man wages were in Germany at the time. From those 2 simple factors he would deduct what he needed to now.

Lincoln I remember for his invitation to ALL Americans to put all strife behind, and conclude the Civil War once and for all, someting we've never been able to do.

I for one, am glad these two great leaders have landmarks dedicated to them in Colombia.

I wouldn't have any religious figure conmmemorated... And this page explains only one of the MANY reasons why religious figures are anathema to civility.

Mommie Dearest; The pope beatifies Mother Teresa, a fanatic, a fundamentalist, and a fraud.

it's rather interesting... ...when you have it in for someone there will be endless ways to undermine them...the beatification has nothing to do with MT in the sense that she's dead and has no say in the matter....actually she would probably have detested the idea....
I just find it galling that a woman whom selflessly gave up her life for the benefit of others, the rejects. the outcasts...the untouchables...this woman gave up for others....she's dead now and you got "sick" people just plain undermining the hard work she done....
let's get 1 thing straight I am anti religion too (nad very anti catholic) but this woman is an exceptional case....my respects go out to you Mother Theresa

i find it amazing that someone would be.... so loose of lip and insulting with a woman like mother theresa. it's usually the sport of those who have done nothing for humanity, often not even their families who speak so derisively of those who lived selfless, humble lives.

i don't put much salt in whomever the church calls a saint, that's GOD'S department, for only HE knows who is/is not a saint.

i knew the young jewish gal who was the camera operator on the film 'mother theresa' she spent 3 years, day and night...24/7 within 10 ft of mother theresa, even sleeping in the same quarters as she.

the transforming effect that m.t. had on this young gal was incredible. before the job, she was a rather 'butchish' young feminist, who'ld just as soon casterate ALL men as look at them. after her time with mother theresa, she became a christian...enow!

cockney, the more you speak and the things of which you speak reveals a humane person...the type i've thought myself fortunate to know over the span of this life.

as you well know, the GREAT WORK, is within onself. regime change starts at home.

peace,

I never liked the bitch either! She stands for everything I'm against. Has she put even the smallest dent in poverty and hunger? NO! A mass murderer would have done more to end suffering in the long run (not that i'm advocating that either, it's just by way of comparison.)

Personally I'd like to see the Marquis de Sade, or Aleister Crowley up somewhere. Or even Frank Zappa or Timothy Leary. Or somebody else from the fringes of society who really opened up new ways for us to think, and actually stood for freedom instead of oppression.

now that you post your sympathies.... maybe you could enlighten us on how large a dent you have made on world hunger, suffering, injustice, etc.

it has been my experience in life that the most negatively vociferous are usually (always) the least contributors to the common good of humanity.

too, it as also been my experience that vicious tongues bespeak vicious minds.

This is a little off-topic But I think altruism is a huge pile of shit anyways. If it were my goal to end world hunger and alleviate suffering, I would fail miserably.

I think the only ultimate solution to suffering would be to annihilate the entire universe. Personally I'd rather have the universe.

But that's neither here nor there. Somebody posted a topic on how they were disgusted on seeing FDR featured on a mural, and I posted some people who I would rather see.

i don't know about locking the thread.... i find it quite revealing on the part of those who find their place in life by criticizing the lives of others. not only criticizing them, but belittling and dirtying their image and memory.

is that cause for locking? i'm not sure, it lets me know a bit about the posters on this site...a bit of clarity, if you will, on those who have opinions on many subjects, and more specifically, on other human beings.

Who else would everybody like to see on a mural? Who do you think would be most appropriate for something like that in Colombia? Why?

pleasantly surprised well....my faith in this forum is being slowly restored.
I like the way this thread has prevented itself from degenerating into a free-for -all...i agree some suggestions-the vendors in particular, i wouldn't mind seen some vibrant colours...why not have a traditional fruit bowl but replacing the usual apples, pears and bananas with maracuya, guama, guanabana, mamoncillos, lulo etc....i dunno we could always paint a giant chontaduro with honey trickling from the sides or better yet get Valderrama to pose with a lot of fruit on his barnet a la Carmen Miranda

....rubiazo-thanks for making the thread flow with a very mature suggestion regarding the mural, although my views on altruism contrast yours-your opinion is entitled
Cockney colombian: there's only one cockney colombian in this forum and that's you...I wasn't born in England much less within earshot of The Bow bells...i'm more mockney than cockney. I actually chose the username because an English mate of mine always called me the Colombian Del boy (only fools and horses) and i got kinda used to it....

Douglas...thanks for the comments...i would say there's been a humane side of me which has been rearing to surface for a few years but i have a long way to go in this path (funny but i might be what you get if you were to mix platano and elmo- those are the two people i relate mostly to)...but you hit the nail on the head when you say change comes from within...truer words have not been written on this thread.

rubiazo...try to forgive another deviation.... i know i once again stray wide of the mark by stating the 'to come' but it's merely a note to the cockney or is it colombian or del boy (?) CHRIST, i get lost...the point being, all this and particularly the parts at the end of c.c. last comment brought a memory of one, georges ivanovich guergief--a russian mystic--who pointed out most poignantly...

'...within each man there lives a wolf and a lamb. the secret to a healthy life is knowing how to keep the sheep intact, and the wolf well fed....one does that, by knowing when to give the old dog a bone.' thus he.

now i appreciate--and respect--that altruistic detractions are clearly not your cup of tea. however, i was taught that in every harvest, there is fruit for all.

and now as i leave this thread, i'll do so sharing a line or two from one of my most luminous teachers, that silver tongued british plenapotentiary, thomas vaughn.

'....thus reader have i given thee my best advise, and now it appears that thou shouldst rail at me for it...maybe thou art as one who has a free spirit. however, should that liberality concern not thy credit, i would have thee keep thy spleen to thyself, for i would not have thee spend what thou canst well spare.' thus he.

i exit now this thread and wait while the munitions are prepared and shortly hurled...
