Dinner out

Ok, so I wanted a good dinner at a good resturant. We go to the best hotel in town and eat there. I had filet mignon and wifie had the baby beef, I also drank two glasses of fresh juice and wifie had one. You didn't need a knife to cut my beef. Wifies would have been better had she not order it well done. Good side dishes and excellent service too. Total bill 39 mil pesos. With 10% tip = total 44 mil or about 22 bucks. Wow! Couldn't do that easily Stateside. I've spent nearly that at Frisby! Those over charging jerks.

Your first post in this thread: In three sentenes needing 5 verbs you missed 4 of them and you forgot to end a question with a question mark.

Your post just now: In three sentences needing 5 verbs you got all 5. And your punctuation was impeccable.

So your English has greatly improved in 45 minutes. At this rate of increase you might win a noble prize for English literature by the weekend.

Nati, Do people in the states really give 15%?

I thought 13% was the mark for good food y service.

By the way, I had a very good time at a place in Ibague. So much so, that the tip may have matched the bill. The waiter then walked us back to our Hotel. I never tipped like that in the US, but I had never had such good food, service y environment, all at the same time.

rocinante says on Dec 27, 2007, 20:55:

Don't mention it Doc. Bartenders and waiters and Maitre'ds can make thousands a week. In the old days it used to be cash money almost tax free, but with stricter laws coming down on restaurant owners recently and credit cards in full force the staff needs to pay more in taxes. But in the larger cities these folks still make stellar money.

Just imagine a restaurant where the average twosome table rings up a tab of $130 bucks. The tip is $25 for the waiter. If he's got 15 tables of this 5 nights a week and tips the bus/bar staff 10% of tips he's got over $1,600.

A buddy of mine works in a flea bag gin mill in Jersey City. He takes home over $500 tax free cash just on Friday nights 6PM - 2AM.

If you are young and can get in at a good restaurant or bar/club in the larger city areas you can make an absolute killing.

my filet was stupendous. when the bartender asked me how i wanted it cooked i told her if the chef needs to know how to cook filet, you got the wrong chef in the kitchen. i told her to leave it to him...it was perfect.

i'll never pay service on a receipt....primarily because, the servers never get it. it is just another way for the club/bar/restaurant owners in colombia to suck more plata from your pocket. i owned a bar/restaurant in llano grande and know whereof i speak. give the money to the server...if you want to. don't give it to the house.

The comments from chorizo in regards to the service industry were cruel, insensitive and uncalled for. After those narrowminded, xenophobic comments you get your undies in a bunch because someone insulted his parents? So, are these posts are the ones that you approve of?

"You people in these service jobs who think you deserve a tip and think yourselves useful. You're not. We can do everything you are doing for us. We don't even need you."

Cheap shot indeed.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Dec 28, 2007, 13:14:

I don't see what's your problem static. Chorizo is not insulting anybody particular, only pointing out how little we actually need these services rendered in service jobs. It has nothing to do with the people who work in these jobs, just the whole idea of paying somebody else for doing the job that you are perfectly able and capable of doing yourself. I believe all tips should be included inthe price for the service and that that tipping should be prohibited by law as a form of bribery.

I also know I'm not the only one having this point of view; here where I live there's very little tipping going on, perhaps just if the service rendered was out of ordinary or the person who performed it went way out of his /her way to get the job done. We don't tip taxi drivers or hairdressers or such at all. At the airports there are no porters; people just get a trolley and off you go with your stuff. I'm raised up thinking that you should do as much as you can yourself, without paying for it or without asking for help. So, there are several ways of thinking about this issue and maybe your way is NOT what the rest of the world think is the best.

static says on Dec 28, 2007, 13:51:

I expect at least some empathy from a moderator. It's no secret the way the world works.

Those of us who have worked in the service industry don't like to be insulted.

Have you ever heard the saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"?
The custom in the United States and Canada is to tip service employees.
You don't have to like it, you don't have to agree with it and nobody will force you to do it.
Don't want to tip? Fine, then don't. One is free to spend their money however they like.

It would be much better if employees in North America would be paid a fair wage and tipping was not necessary, but they are not, they won't be and none of us set up the system or can change it. It is what it is. Your actions will not change anything, so don't worry.

Besides, the Internal Revenue Service doesn't care what we think: they tax the waiters and bartenders on expected income from tips whether or not you patronize the place.

There are several ways of thinking about this issue and maybe your way is NOT the best.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Dec 28, 2007, 14:05:

Empathy? I've not been accused for the lack of it before, but I guess we all have our faults. I've worked in service jobs while and in between (waitress, cleaning, receptionist) studies and real jobs and I didn't feel insulted by chorizo's post. A little abrasive, perhaps, but not directed at anybody particular. I didn't make any value judgement on different lifestyles, just that you shouldn't take it for granted that everybody should share your values and priorities in lifestyle issues.

But I agree with Chorizo - I don't need a waiter, I can get the food myself, I can clean the table myself and cook the food myself. Actually the whole idea of being served in a restaurant is just plain old silly. I think I'll just stay home and have my servant who makes COP$7.000 a day cook for me and serve me. I'll even throw in an extra thousand pesos - but it's not a tip - just a salary increase.

Lowell - thanks for posting the restaurant info. I would have gotten out of this thread earlier!

My bottom line with this is that tipping is a custom in certain areas of the globe. Do the right thing and follow the customs of the culture you are in - not only is it respectful but also it's common decency. Belittling a society's customs only makes one look ignorant and uneducated.

Roci... I generally respect your observations and comments, but... sometimes, the customs are themselves quite ignorant and lack any thought process.

and, thank you.

billyb says on Dec 28, 2007, 22:31:

customs, almost by definition, usually lack a thought process. People just follow them because that's how it's always been done, no thought process necessary.

The statement "The Dollar is at a 5 year low against the pound, and a 10 year low against the
peso."

9 years ago low 1293
8 years ago low 1525
7 years ago low 1873

So another bozo statement as the peso has been over COP2000 since Nov 2nd and the year low this year is COP1882(6/12).

BUT

I don't think Chorizo means that the Peso was .75 to the dollar. I think he's talking about "worth" as in buying power. For example if I buy a loaf of bread in the US at 1USD and convert my 1USD to, say COP600 pesos and the same loaf of bread cost COP600 pesos in Colombia than we are at equal worth - as far as bread is concerned.

The exchange rate doesn't always mean as much as it seems on the surface when you go back in time and if you are comparing two countries with dynamic economies. Yes the peso was hundreds. I know in 1991 the peso was about 500COP to the dollar. However the "buying power" of your converted dollar is the real meaning of "worth". Inflation needs to be taken into account.

If I am getting COP$5,000 to USD$1 and a Pilsen costs COP$10,000 the rate looks good on the charts but.... I'll take 1,800 - 1 and pay 1,000 for the beer any day.

byoung says on Dec 29, 2007, 05:04:

My first post on pbh was asking for help from you guys, the post is still up ,but no help came ,
After losing my bank cards ,and no one at home to help me ,I walked for 2 weeks into Bogota,
My bank back in NYC tells me could be up to two months for a new card to get to me.3 night's sleeping in the park ,
I log into phb again ,to find chorizo has offered to help,I turn up at his apartment to be greeted by the maid who had
Dinner ready for me,I have my own room ,own bathroom,
After a great hot shower ,first in 3 weeks ,I find the maid had already put my things in the washer,
The phone and Internet were there for me to use,and chorizo had his driver on stand by if I wanted to go any where,
At 9pm ,chorizo had to meet friends ,he invited me along,we went to a restaurant I'm not sure where ,but its called carbon de pollo
I think ,as the car pulled up the doorman came running over ,as we went in the place is huge ,bar on the left ,every thing being cook in the open on the right ,
Must be more than 100 tables here, the staff all were coming over to say hello, the place looked full but we were lead to a table right by the stage, the band playing even said hello,
I never heard him order but within minutes the table was filling up with all kinds of food, 2 bottles of wine,4 waiters we had round the table,
The friends arrived ,as more food was being served ,another 2 bottles of wine,it was my best meal in Colombia ,
After an hour or so ,they handed me a menu,I thought every thing on the table already was the meal ,it was only the starters,
When my side of beef came it was the biggest and widest I have had ,it filled the plate, and boy was it good, trays of veg came ,even more food on the table ,
It just kept coming,
Then all the lights went out ,and all the staff were around our table singing,
2 more bottles of wine ,chorizo told his driver he could have one glass,I was absolutely pigged out ,
When a trolly came along with desert as much as I would have like to try I was done ,could not eat another thing.
2 of the chefs even came to the table, which seemed to have the same amount of food still on it as when we started.
Coffee and my first Colombian aguardiente, that stuff is hot, then they came gave chorizo 3 boxes ,it was every thing that was left on the table ,you take it home ,he gave it to his driver.the bill I saw was 520.000,I cant say have much tip chorizo gave ,but as we were leaving ,the wine water got a 20 ,the girl that had seated us got a 20,I think it was the manager he got 20,and the porter outside he got 20,back at the apartment the maid bought in coffee and shortbread from Scotland,
More Colombian aguardiente ,and my first good nights sleep in weeks, this morning I came out the room ,the maid had eggs bacon beans bread coffee juice ,all ready ,and she gave me my washing that was already pressed and ironed , chorizo is not here ,I cant wait to thank him ,I feel like a new man I can tell you.
I'm here at the computer looking out over Bogota from this penthouse, the maid keeps passing by ,would I like coffee, and just yesterday I never had the money to buy coffee.
Chorizo is a life saver, and am I glad I put my post on pbh. I think I'm beginning to like colombia.tiding to all pbh for the new year.

Two of my friends lost their wallets in colombia, both had new visa and debit cards hand delivered within 2 days. (One american bank, one canadian). Which bank can't replace a card

BYOUNG you can't wait to thank him, CHORIZO? He posted three different phone numbers here for you in the "your hardship post"(http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/looking-for-workvolunteer-in-bog...). One minute he's a man the next he's a woman, he rants about tipping ruining society and the next you're saying he tossing 20,000K to everyone?

You say you bought in a $70,000 USD plotter but you are travelling with only one bank card and/or only have one account? And no one, no where, no how can money be wired to you - even from yourself from the same bank or another bank with a simple LOA fax?

CHORIZO, BYOUNG & THEGROWER all signed in here within days.... going to turn into a circus, a three ring circus.

Not to be petty, billyb, but I spelled "thought" correctly in the previous post about the glass house which you also quoted. That I made a typo in the previous post, is a totally different animal. I make a lot of typos because I'm too lazy to proofread but I know how to conjugate the verb think in the past tense and you didn't because to write "thunk" is NOT a typo.

As far as the rules are concerned if you have a Letter Of Authorization on file with them you can fax in wire instructions from anywhere to anywhere. The only way to get rejected is if you or the recipient are on the OFAC list. Of course if you are wiring millions to Afganastan or something equally as shady (Colombia?) you will have to answer questions - but 5 10 grand not a problem.

Mr InBogota, I have so many back ups of bank cards it would make your head spin. I know how you feel!

Byoung was walking in Bogota for two weeks? Slept outside for two days? Helluva story. Why was his plotter post (really you, according to you) posted before he got to your "place" in Bogota? Why did you say you are female but he's saying you are male?

Maybe ,just maybe ,I'm Chorizo too ,as you can see I'm doning the double spaced comma thing.

By the way ,thanks for the big dinner ,and taking me off the street ,and leaving me in your house with your maid while you were backpacking somehere. Really ,I put the post about tipping ,it wasn't you as byoung -really me and you - said that we were tipping like crazy ,throwing around 20K bills like water.
