Hi!, I'm an American living in Ft.lauderdale, Florida and planning to relocate to Barranquilla, Colombia to reside there with my girlfriend. Is it hard to find employment there for a American? Any feedback on this matter would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Scott.

Gator says on Jul 28, 2006, 07:35: Yes! Too much competition from Colombians. Getting harder and harder to obtain English instruction employment and I understand they have tightened up on work visas unless to you a job offer in hand. toneloc24 says on Jul 28, 2006, 07:35: Dude It's hard for qualified Colombians to find employment in Barranquilla, AND the rest of Colombia. The job market is absolutely nothing like the USA. And the money is nothing like what you'd see here in the USA. "Don't tase me, bro!!!!" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

beachboy45 says on Jul 29, 2006, 07:05: Thanks everyone for your good feedback and advice on this matter I've been to Barranquilla three times now and realize the life there is extremely difficult and the wages very low.And of course going there as a visitor and trying to make a living there is two totally different situations!I'm afraid just being a sales person, I will wind up on the unemployment line, just as many of my fellow Colombians! It's a shame!, I love Colombia!,the people are very special there!,would love to live there!, and of course desire very much to be with my girlfriend to share a life together!I will change my focus to still trying to get her here on a student visa, she's graduating in September!, I'm very proud of her! Maybe in the future, with better finances I can think about retiring there. Thanks again everyone!, Scott.

beachboy45 says on Jul 30, 2006, 09:49: attn: muchocafe Hey!, thanks for the info and insight into this! I've not totally ruled out the possibility of living and working in Colombia I'm just trying to be very realistic about the prospects of this big move in my life! I really love this woman and my main goal right now is for us to be together rather it be in Colombia or the states! She's into sales in Barranquilla, makes a good income, but has two boys to provide for. Her money is stretched as far as possible and of course if we do marry I wish to bring some stability to her life and not be just another problem for her! I work for a skin care company here in Ft.lauderdale and I'm investigating the possibility of promoting thier products in Barranquilla.Yes, I would appreciate any other information you would have in this matter! My girlfriend is also always looking for ways to supplement her income and lead her to a better life. My e-mail address is miamivisions at yahoo.com Thanks again and best wishes always, Scott.

corazon en colombia says on Jul 31, 2006, 10:43: Hey, what happened here? Before I remember post after post about how it was relatively easy for a native speaker to find work in Colombia as an English teacher. Now on this thread it seems everyone is saying the opposite. ??? What happened? Colombia = paradiso 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

beachboy45 says on Aug 1, 2006, 10:28: I would love to teach English in Colombia! From the info I've gathered from my research into this is that the wages are of course low,and there still is a demand there, but the big problem now is the tightening of the time you have to stay and work here. Would this change if I get married in Colombia? Any info appreciated, Scott.

elmodefoque says on Aug 1, 2006, 10:38: Being old is not so bad; soon I will retire in curramba and not have to worry about freaking work. With no wife or girlfriend my time will be spent throwing parties every weekend in my brand new apt. During the week I’m taking my ass to Cartagena to hang out with tomtom and his girls. Not a bad way to end my life! I'll get there, when I get there! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
