Did you meet someone that is a Gorrero? Is that part of a culture or it depends on the person?

For me a Goterero is a mixed wild race that is in the middle of tacaño (stingy) and, gorrero. Never spend a coin on anything for him or for others and making the things worst... lives using others to get what they want. For example that smoker that always smokes others cigarrettes, one that always eat dinner outside but inside his friends dinning room. At first you handle that but with the time is a pain... What do you think guys?

No more open door policies....

I worked with a woman liked that. Two times we had lunch and both times on the way to the restaurant she said, "Oh darn, I forgot to stop off at the bank and get some cash." The third time she tried pulling that stunt I asked her where her bank was and I would drive her there. She got totally flustered and stammered somthing about needing to make sure she had money with her.

What a twit.

That was the last time we had lunch. I personally can't stand people who can't pull their own financial weight.

Hi Lila,

I agree that if you ask a woman on a date you should pay. I would consider that a traditionally accepted social norm. However, we were just co-workers and I was as attracted to her as Superman is attracted to Kriptonite. In that case, it's pretty clear-cut that it's a Dutch lunch.

I think sometimes people like to play dumb, like this woman did, because they think it's a clever, manipulative ploy, but it just invites resentment.

When I go to Colombia and invite a couple out, we pay because we invited them. However, on subsequent social forays I would expect them to pay or each couple pays on their own.

That's one thing I love about my wife's family. When we took the bus to the finca that we stayed at the first week of our trip, her mom and sister insisted on paying their own way. We paid for the rental of the ranch and they wanted to demonstrate that they were willing to help too. Those kinds of things really impress me. It becomes very uncomfortable, and stifling, when people just expect you to pay because you are a foreignor. It should be a shared load, which makes everyone responsible to some degree.

JS, I think you misunderstood the post. I don't think that Lila was saying that being a freeloader is part of colombian culture... hell no. what I understood she was saying is that the gorrero and the goterero are two recurring characters in colombian folklore and we are going into a profound analysis of the differences between the two.

Well you know we, latin people, use gestures to comunicate like italian people, argentinian (jejeje they believe they are italian) in a way, so if you see people on the streets talking, you can guess what they are talking about, bc of their gestures . That´s why we use different gestures, the elbows slapping is kind of saying, when someone is going to give you something they have to extend the arm, and we do that is bc that person has a tied elbow, so they cannot extend their arms to give anything to anyone. Here we say that person is tacaño and we he is sleeping and dreaming about he is drinking a cup of coffee, he wake up very fast, bc he doesn´t want to pay for that coffee!!! ejejej Todo al gratin!!!

UGH I hate gorreros...honestly. I recently had a bad experience with an old friend who came to visit and well "credit card doesn't work in the UK" yet it gave her 20 pounds and nothing else...go figure.
My best friend in Colombia pulled the same crap on occasion and the problem was she has a very expensive taste and likes to be seen where all beautiful people are...I have no problem with that, I love nice places myself, but when she eats like a pig, orders drinks, desert etc and then "sorry i dont have enough money and still need to pay for parking" then well...it starts bothering me. Thank god she found a bf who pays for all her shit though...I hate gorreros. I am not stingy myself, and I seldom carry cash on me because cash is dirty and full of germs but if I know a certain place doesnt take cards then I freaking go out of my way and find an ATM, so I have no sympathy for the cashless...
