Diamon Rings In Colombia:

Let me ask you guys a question. I purchased a diamond ring to give to a young Colombiana - and I am wondering - it is approximately 3 carats (1.5 center surrounded by to .75 side stones) - has anyone here ever brought a big diamond ring through customs. And if so, is there ever a problem?

Thanks.

Go to a local store that sells costume jewelry and buy a ring for 10 bucks. then toss it and take the receipt with you just in case you have to show it. Don't bring the ring box with you. That would be the dead give a way. You can buy one in Colombia.

Not trying to rain on your parade but why the fok are you buying a 3.0 carat ring? For a barrio girl or for an educated professional? Either way, take it back and buy her a .25 or at most a .50 carat ring. She will still love you just as much as if you would have bought her a 3.0 carat ring.

Gringo Spy ... LOL - True that - this girl has never seen a diamond. Whether she is a barrio girl? That she is not.

Tinto - true that as well. I am going to insure that here - and if anything goes wrong - well someone broke into my car in down town.

I am a llittle worried someone might cut off her finger - and she through the years has had an incredible nack for losing valuable items (well like cell phones and sht like that). But whatever you live once. And if you are going to buy a diamond do it right. Right? ANd I can swing it.

Also it is not 3 K. It is a 1.5 center surrounded by to .75.k three diamond engagement.

ColombianoGringo says on Aug 12, 2008, 08:06:

Sounds like you paid retail. You should never pay even close to retail on a ring.

In any case, I wouldn't worry about customs. The idea to stick it in your change pocket will work.

A lot of people freaked out when I asked about insuring my wife's engagement ring. There were dire predictions of every evil that would befall her if she wore an expensive ring in Colombia. Obviously, she will want to be careful where she wears it. A lot depends on where she lives, but if she is discreet, she should be fine.

On that note, it appears to be very difficult to insure a ring in Colombia unless she or her family has property insurance already. I tried to get insurance for a ring with an appraised value in the neighborhood of yours and would have only been able to do it through my relatives in Bogota. I opted against this since my debit card offers a year of loss or theft prevention.

My husband and I went to Platería Ramírez in Cali to get our wedding bands. I made the big, big, big mistake of saying "honey, let me get a simple 18k white gold wedding band to wear in Colombia so it doesn't get stolen, and once we're in the US we can get the diamond one".

Yeah.. we did get the simple band and today I'm stuck with this sucker since the diamond one looks more like a dream now. =~(

nbenjamin says on Aug 12, 2008, 10:36:

$ 15,000 - retail? No, I did not go to Macy or tiffany's or something like that. I went to downtown Los Angeles - and bought the actual diamonds separate from the ring. The diamonds went for about $ 12,400. Then I put together the ring at a different spot for about $ 2,000.

You could not buy this ring for $ 5,000. Maybe, you could get the thing for, $ 10,500 - if you knew people and the doode making the ring was doing you a favor and the doode selling the diamonds was doing you a favor.

Go find a 1.5 carat ring surrounded by two .75 carats (also color is all D, cut all "ideal", and clarity SI) for $ 5,000 and I will give you $1,000.

15000 - it is not the amount that is important - it is all relative - if I was a struggling waiter than maybe a $ 2,000 ring would be great if I was a millionaire maybe 100,000 would be appropriate - but I gotta hook my girl up.

Downtown Los Angeles. Good man. That is where I got the main diamond for my wife's ring. I have family in the jewelry business so they helped me with finding a good deal. Like I said, only suckers pay retail for diamonds.

She wanted a heart shaped cut. These are relatively rare and very expensive. Luckily, a place in downtown LA got it for me with a 1.2 Carats, D color and SI clarity center stone for right at about Rappaport(wholesale) price. Any retail jewelry store would have charged double what it cost me if they could even get me something comparable.

I also had the ring custom made. One thing to note is that white gold and platinum seem fairly uncommon in Colombia so a lot of people mistake them for silver. That should help draw less attention.

Thanks for all the advice - so I think I will just walk it through the medal detector and hope nothing goes wrong.

C-Gringo - Yeah - no question the only way to buy a ring is downtown los angeles. Is that the diamond capital of the world? Or I wonder if NY would provide better deals when getting diamonds. I had no connections I just went down there dealt with a few different people and went with the people I liked.

One Last question. In medellin you have to walk through a medal detector - Is there a medal detector walking through at Bogota - I cannot remember?

Thanks again for everyones help.

Take that foking ring back and buy her a Cubic Z or at most a .25 or .50 center stone diamond ring with a few tiny ones on the sides. Listen to all of the great advice given here on PBH. If nothing else you must think of her safety! She will never be able to wear that 3.0 ring in public because THEY WILL cut her finger off to get it! Anyone who buys a ring like that for a Colombian woman is suffering from an inferiority complex and is using the status of the BIG diamond to make himself bigger than he really is... IMHO of course

I seriously don't mean to piss in your corn flakes but get a grip man and smell the coffee! Oh, BTW I speak from experience on this subject. My qualifications are not something I'm proud of... I did something similar although she wasn't from Colombia, she was a Gringa, and I bought her a $36k ring. Still have it in the box in a drawer as I can't see selling it for half of what I paid for it so it sits there and reminds me of my foolishness and stupidity.

Money is relative. If 15k is really not that much. Here, a condo in a decent neighborhood is 600k.

In Los Angeles or New York or cities like these - a ring of that Magnitude is nice but it is far from excessive. In the Westside of Los Angeles, (specifically, Santa Monica) that ring will be common - and is a requirement so that she does not feel left out. So the ring will not make her a target. Furthermore, it will be insured - so I am not worried.

"I'm not sure what's enjoying about being $15,000 in the hole and in the same place you started otherwise." - I will tell you what is enjoying how happy she will be. Nothing more. It is worth it to me.

What planet do you live on? I know lots of women with much more expensive rings in the US and they never get bothered. The center stone on my mother's ring is 3 carat and she never takes it off. I don't know where you live in the US, but in the nice areas around here, nobody is getting mugged.

My wife wore her ring in Colombia for a long time and was never bothered. In fact, she had her cell phone stolen once and the thieves didn't even look twice at the ring. Obviously, you have to be somewhat discreet, but lots of women in my family in Colombia have expensive jewelry and nobody has had any fingers cut off.

I have a graduate degree. She has a decent job. I have a really good job - one that would allow me to purchase a 15k ring without thinking it was the end of the world or a ton of money. You guys act like I bought her the two door Bentley.

Listen if the standard was two months salary I would spend 30k on the ring. I did not spend that. Jesus - I understand that we all come from different backgrounds - but lay off. If I made 1.2 million a year I would spend 50k plus on a ring. If I made 50k I would spend 2k. All relative. Relax. I am not telling you you have to spend that.

These people are the rookies acting like 15k is some incredible amount of money - everyone on this blog showed their cards right there - acting like 15k is crazy change. I make that in a month. Thats it. Not 3 months not 4 months one f-ing month. Imagine this - if you (all of you) could pull that down in a month what would you do? Well - I do it - because I make it.

There is no saving up - that is credit card change. So I am unclear on what you are calling bullshit on. Let me make something clear - you live in LA - you are under 30 - and you make over 180k a year (I realize that is not crazy money but it is very solid money) no chick is out of your league and you are not rolling with nasty chicks either. nothing but the plushest of plush.

I dont have to lie it is what it is. Not crazy money - but everyone here knows that that is solid money for a doode under 30 - and very few people can compete at this age. I would guess it is in the top 98 percentile for my age. My chick - she is probably an "LA 9" to an LA 10.

I am a first-will be second year (in about a month) lawyer at an international law firm. First year starting salary at big firms is 160k plus bonus (bonus ranges between 15-50k and up to 150k if you are in NY, but 15-50 in LA). The salary is the same at every major commercial litigation firm.

You guys are acting as if 15k is this huge amount of money. I tried my hardest to be cool and say hey money all depends on where you come from. But you guys keep pushing it. So I had to clarify to me 15k is not an enormous amount of money it is about 1 months salary. An I will advertise all I want. I live in LA. This money is solid for LA - but anybody who has lived in LA knows that this money is not spectacular here and willl not get me robbed or kidnapped.

Finally - if I was going to lie:

1st I would choose a better profession if I were to lie. I mean lawyer - that is just a normal solid profession. I got lucky through hardwork and got a great job out of law school

2nd I would choose a hire salary.

Also if you want to fact check - find out what some of the largest Commercial litigation firms are. Here is a list of some of the more prestigious firms in the US - http://www.vault.com/nr/lawrankings.jsp?law2009=1&ch_id=242

Call and ask what starting salary is - it is 160k plus bonus.

And yes lawyers use terms like doode and are normal people when f--ing around on a blog

AND DAMN ALL I WANTED TO KNOW IS WHETHER I WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM THROUGH CUSTOMS - I did not know you kids would get all out of shape.

Go ahead and give it to her, I'm sure she will love it and in time you will forget about her along with the $15,000 USD you paid for it when she dumps your sorry ass after she gets her green card.

Joel y Luza says on Aug 12, 2008, 20:51:

ok.. so lets say you actually are going to spend $15K on a ring and try to work your way through customs; let me point this little fact out for you... You are required to declare any CASH over $10k.. Even though the ring, obviously, isn't cash, the customs "doode" has very right to ask for a valuation, IF HE IS SUSPICIOUS THAT YOU ARE TRANSPORTING SAID RING IN AN ATTEMPT AT LAUNDERING MONEY. The theory is you buy it here, in the good ol' US OF A, for cash, transport it to COLOMBIA and then sell it in COLOMBIA for cash, and pay Pablo, the narco trafficker cartel cashier. This is seen every day in Customs.

What recourse do they have? confiscate the ring until a value is assigned, and be a BIG pain in your A$$. Can they keep it? If they can show it is purchased with ill gotten funds, (illegal sources, human trafficking, or tax evasion), if they want and can prove your intention to decieve and avoid declaring cash , but the burden of proof falls on your lap, TO PROVE THAT IT IS NOT!..Remember the Patriot ACT? All this stuff became prima facie evidence.

Now sell the damned thing, buy CZ, at half the carat wt, to stay off the Govt's radar.,Then buy yourself a little sumthin' sumthin' for at least part of the night...

I can tell you this, unless your chica is from estrato 6 and well traveled, she will never know the difference in rings, and she can care less. Doing something for her mamacita carries more wieght than a ring will any day,,

J & L - MEDILLIN - that is not how you spell Medellin -. People make typos all the time on a blog.

DN - you do not deal with lawyers of my caliber - believe me. I dont care what you say - If you are not making well over 200k you cannot afford a decent lawyer in Los Angeles.

But I go back to my first point - which is this.

When you leave the airport at customs you go through a metal (properly spelled for cry babies) detector when in Medillin (improperly spelled to dis J & L). In bogota do you go through the detectors.

Worry about U.S. customs - hey dumb ass I am the lawyer not you. As long any item you leave the country with and return with - such as a 15k ring does not need to be declared unless you have done something to increase the value of that ring - such as add an additional diamond.

so.. you are claiming to be an attorney and then make a statement that another isn't? Now, how can you be so sure???? I think you have a load of something in your "legal briefs" ...and it is pretty stinky....

Nope, not an attorney, just a dumb ass accountant that spent many years following the money, investigating money laundering, dude... a $15K ring is as good as currency... If they think you are transporting it, even if you are not, for payment of goods and services to another country, and said goods and services are illegal in the states, (think coca and Colombia in the same thought, dumb ass), AND YOU ARE TRYING, or it appears that you are trying, TO SKIRT THE DECLARATION OF CASH AS YOU LEAVE THE COUNTRY, (Now think fraud and financial crimes in the same thought), consider your ring in temporary custody until YOU PROVE, (think prima facie evidence, first year of law school), those funds came from a legal source. If you can't prove it, beyond a reasonable doubt, color your ring gone.

I think, what people are trying to tell you is it is a huge risk, with really no purpose, in the eyes of Colombianas, to be buying and transporting a $15k ring. NOT TOO MANY COLOMBIAN CHICAS CAN PHATHOM THE VALUE...

My wife is from a very well healed Colombian family, and she blushed at the thought of a diamond ring, and refused it. She wanted an 18 kt gold band... Part of it was safety of wearing an expensive ring on the streets of Bogota..The other was that it was pretentious...

you an attorney? You are no more of an attorney than they guy who cleaned my pool this morning..Your demeanor gives you away, let alone your spelling. No attorney I work with, nor hired in my life, would carry on like a 2 year old, on a web community, bragging about their wealth and fawning over a $15k ring you are gifting to a Colombian muchacha..In fact, if they did, I would have fired them instantly.

This is hilarious. For those who are jealous of this bloke benjamin, get a life. Pretend he isn't what he says he is, a rich lawyer. His rather poor demonstration of spelling will allow you to suspend your belief and you can stop being jealous by believing he's a quack. If he really isn't a rich lawyer and just wants attention, well, you are giving him exactly what he wants.

Benjamin, if people are jealous of you, who cares? Ignore the useless comments and take with you the useful advice from this website. I should think that the amount of trouble you have at customs depends on which entry point you use. If you enter Colombia by bus through Venezuela or Ecuador, beware. If you enter by plane, just declare the damn thing at customs and pay the duties, you can afford it, so no worries.

As for the Colombianas taking him to the cleaners, if this comes to pass, a good life lesson. 15 grand ain't the end of the world, especially for someone who can afford it.
