Defenition of "Gringo"?

So, what is the exact defenition of gringo? american born?! Caucasian?! or simple fluent english accent speaker?!!

I would like to know what I would be called in Colombia: My parents are both Chinese; I was born in Panama ( till i was 8 ); moved to Canada where I lived for 20+ years and finish all my education. Spanish was probably my first language i learned in which now I have almost all forgotten. I am also fluent in speaking Chinese but not with literature. As for English, I am fluent both with speaking, reading and writting. So what do that make me?!

if you look Chinese you would be called a "chino" in Colombia but don't think you would be called a gringo

Comes from theSpanish word griego for a Greek. Someone speaking a language that cannot be understood. ¨It is Greek tö me.¨ I am called gringo all the time and it is not an insult. <

Tio Gator is right.

Chinos born in Panama will still be considered "chinos" in Colombia. No matter if they spoke English. Colombians are not uptight about these things; they call it as they see it, according to what they've been exposed to. You won't experience any racial discrimination in Colombia for being Oriental.

BTW, is caslug still around? He 'd be able to tell exactly how Colombians refer to Orientals and if there is any racial discrimination. I'm always told that I can't know for sure for being whitey European myself.

haha, I guess i might have been too spoiled living in toronto where there is alot of oritental communities. But I dont see any complications of me adopting to any society. However, has anyone life in medellin. And if so, had any of you found much of asian community near centro? Here in Toronto where I live, walking down to downtown in 15 minutes, I would at least see 20 orientals. Is that the case in Medellin downtown?

Isn't referring to a person or people as "Oriental" considered insulting? I thought the correct term was "Asian". Or is it just us hung-up, up-tight US gringos that get too P.C. and worry about that crap?

But, agreeing with above posters - if a person is obviously of Asian descent, in Colombia, they are referred to as "Chinos." It doesn't matter if they are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tai, etc. Just like if a person is obviously Caucasian, they will be called a gringo. As far as I know, there is no malice or ill-intent from the use of the word chino in Colombia.
