Defendant gets death in rape, slaying of teen

BY SUSANNAH NESMITH

Circuit Judge William Thomas sentenced Victor Caraballo to death Thursday for the 2002 murder of 18-year-old Ana Maria Angel.
Caraballo confessed that he, his brother and three friends kidnapped and robbed Angel and her boyfriend, Nelson Portobanco. The couple, high school sweethearts, were snatched from a Miami Beach street corner after they had taken a midnight stroll on the beach.

Caraballo and the other four men drove the couple north on Interstate 95, taking turns raping Angel while Portobanco crouched on the floor of the truck.

The men stabbed Portobanco and left him for dead by the side of the highway. Portobanco survived and was able to make his way to the road and flag down a passing motorist. Though he was critically injured, he immediately alerted authorities that Angel was in danger.

Police mounted a massive search, but they were too late. Angel was found by the side of the road with a gunshot to the back of the head. Her hands were clasped in prayer.

A Miami-Dade jury found Caraballo guilty of kidnapping, robbery, rape, murder and attempted murder and recommended by a vote of 9-3 that Caraballo be sentenced to death.

I remeber this when It happened..Very Sad.... Shot in the back of the head just like the family from Texas where they found both parents and the two kids all shot in the back of the head on the Florida Turnpike...

Panthdave, That family who was shot on the Interstate was a real tradgedy. The Innocent Victime were the Young Kids but the Parents(mom and Dad) were heavily involved in the drug trade after the truth finally came out here in south florida. Nice to see those PuertoRicans who killed the Colombian Girl are getting their just rewards,,,

I think you'll find that the "death penalty" for certain crimes, down here, doesn't exist officially because it doesn't need to, in the same way it didn't exist in Sicily in the 1950s.

Rapist? They send him to a nice Colombian jail, where he's one dead HP in about, oh, forty-eight hours tops.

Death penalty sounds like justice to me.Some people are just a waist of skin. For certain crimes i think its appropriate.

My quarrel with the death penalty is how can you be 100% certain you've got the right guy? We had so many miscarriages of justice in the UK in the 1970s, that I'd be chary of sentencing anyone to death.

Emotionally though, I'd like to see filth like Victor Caraballo boiled alive.

"Simon you fool, the death penalty is ILLEGAL in Colombia. I'm beginning to wonder if you even know your own country's Constitution... or maybe you conveniently skipped the part that said 'no habra pena de muerte'"

Rubito, I agree with the death penalty. There are just some people among us who do not deserve to be members of the human race! I hope they do implement it in Colombia one day, it's sorely needed.

They should be skinned alive first, then killed......AND the whole death penalty process for them should be filmed, put on DVD to music, and sold for profit as well as piped into the cable TV system of all the prisons. The profit should go to the victims family, and to a Victims of Violence Fund.....Got Justice???

Just my opinion...

Cartadeangel is correct on this one. I live in a small barrio in Medellin. I know of 3 murders just outside of my barrio. Quick justice! I asked one time, "did they get the guys who did it?" The question I should have asked was, "what did this person do?" Apparently, people here don't care much about getting the culprits. They are more concerned about what this person had done! For example, one man in his 30's ended up having sex with two young girls in their early teens(sisters). One thing led to another and the father found out. This guy was found outside of our little barrio with a bag over his head and a bullet in it. No waiting around for endless trials and so on. While they don't have the death "penalty" here on the books it sure does exist.

There really is another justice system here that is kind of in the background.

i like how they used to do it back in the day...... when the people took care of the business. anyway, as a Catholic myself, I am kind of against the death penalty but moreso because I think that person should spend a life of penance in misery. Now to me, that would be justice!!! Why end his pain on earth with what he has done? put him in a jail cell with lifers who will gangbang him and make them their slave. The family members have to suffer with their loss until they pass, so should that guy.

First the Death Penalty in the States Costs Taxpayers. I hope somebody ends there life in Jail quick like in Colombia..I personally think they should be sent to San Quinten West Block and will be over for them in a week or so...with the costs maybe to drag there bodies to a morgue and thats it..

First:Won't have to spend all that money on jail and legal paperwork and the billable time to get these guys killed..Its amazing how much it costs to bring justice to somebody in the States..

But at least justice has been served.....

SQ is pretty tame these days, the place to do hard time where inmates take care of these types of people is Corcoran or Pelican Bay. those are the hard core prisons. SQ ain't what it used to be.
