Death Entertainment

yesturday i walking down 7th,
as i was crossing 20 street i noticed a large crowd gathered near some cars in the center streach of the road.
so natuarally i thought i would go and see what the hell they were looking at.
it was a decent sized crowd, so i couldn't get a good look,
so i asked, "¿hay un cuerpo o que?"

i thought it was kind off strange, that so many people wanted to see the dead guy, eventually i got a look, it wasn't pretty, definatly something that i wouldn't want my kids to see.
even still there were two mothers with babies pushing into the crowd to get a look at the bloody mangled corpse of some poor old guy trying to get to the other side of the road.
maybe its normal to want to see bloody corpses.... just general curiosity i suppose.
but it was a little surreal, how there was so many people trying to get look.
quality entertainment.

Maybe good to show your kids - a graphic illustration of the dangers inherent in our car culture in general, and crossing the street in particular.

I'm surprised it didn't set off a chain reaction wherin 500 more people were killed by speeding taxis.

Rubber neckers Why do you think the cars all slow down on the opposite side of the freeway in the States when there is a wreck?

EVERYONE wants to see those blood and guts.

Only difference is here, the rubber neckers are on foot hahahaha

Very true BAQ. Nothing bad happens in the US though. Like the poor 16 year old kid shot to death this week in my city for a stupid cell phone. Or the woman also in my area who cut a baby out of another woman's belly. That stuff only happens in third world countries doesn't it?

Interesting point AFAIK there has NEVER been a school shooting or somebody going postal and offing a bunch of his or her co-workers or anything of the sort in Colombia. Perhaps while there is a lot more blood and guts in Colombia, it is also more easily explainable?

Accidents in Bogotá I had a similar experience a couple of months ago, one that really affected me. A little boy around five or six was killed on Crr 4 and 4th street by a collectivo on its way to San Blas. We heard the screams from inside the building and then saw large crowd gather around the boy. The woman who cleans the building went out to inspect the scene and came back to report what she had seen with graphic detail. I couldn't bear to go outside, so I stayed inside the building clear away from the crowd and the child. A police truck which had been driving directly behind the collectivo picked up the boy and placed him in the bed of the truck along with the aunt with whom he had been traveling. Though i tried to visually avoid the situation, the truck drove right by me and the boy and the crying aunt passed through my field of vision. Seconds later a uniformed man who cleans the area began to nonchalantly sweep around the puddle of blood that remained.

I'm not sure why, but I cried and cried all afternoon thinking about the little boy, his mother and family. After that incident, I became MUCH more careful as a commuter. I'm actually a bit surprised there aren't more deadly accidents in the city, given the craziness of public transportation, the hopping on and off buses in the middle of the street, and having some drivers increase their speed when they see pedestrians crossing in front of them!

I guess it's a question of degree "AFAIK there has NEVER been a school shooting or somebody going postal and offing a bunch of his or her co-workers or anything of the sort in Colombia."

Dude, people shoot canister bombs at churches here. They cut people from stem to stern with chainsaws. Street kids are shot down like dogs in some neighborhoods, just for being unsightly. Crazy people toss grenades into bars and the "national liberation army" and the "revolutionary army" plant landmines around soccer fields and school yards. Then there are the sweethearts who blow up little kids they've paid to ride a bike bomb over to the police station.

Why do you need "postal" when you've got that.

GIB That pulling the head up to show the motorist came from a book called the Choir Boys, written by Joseph Wombach, who was a cop with LAPD. If you can find a copy (Was origionally printed back in the late 70's or early 80's,) read it, it's a great book.

Mr.Hollywood,
i presume you are a gringo,
(i use the term gringo becuase apparently its not accepted to call people from the U.S.A "americans" cos that would be symbolic of thrid world submission to imperialism, as the colombian people are also american??? anyway i'm not trying to offend you.)
so i have been living in colombia for a while now,
i've never heard of such things as
"Then there are the sweethearts who blow up little kids they've paid to ride a bike bomb over to the police station."
please back up this information with some facts, becuase i find it hard to believe.

You find it hard to believe? Because it is so barbaric? Anyone who follows Colombian news as I do will recall the FARC attack on a police checkpoint by using a remote controlled bomb they had rigged to a child's bicycle. They then gave the kid some small treat in return for riding over to the checkpoint where they detonated the bomb. They have also used animals for the same purpose. We are talking about human scum here.

well... it seems i may be proving my ignorance,
do you have any links for these incidents?

i thought i had a good idea of what goes on, espieacally in bogota.
i know there's a lot of ugly shit, unfortunatly i've been witness to myself.

is it not possible some of these stories are pure propaganda,
first off all, the FARC don't go out there way to blow up police stations, and it's certainatly not part of their agenda to blow up kids.

MY NEW PROJECT im going to do some research.
this story reaks of propaganda.
i don't sympathize with the FARC, but i can't stand propaganda.
im not saying that a boy didn't die.
i'll conduct this research with total respect.

in colombia there's always an alternate story.

possible accident?? "According to the Colombian authorities a 10-year-old boy used by the FARC to deliver a bomb was killed on 17 April 2003 after the bicycle he rode up to a military checkpoint exploded."
-maybe an accident?????

i guess its not really important if it was an accident or not.
its the fact they used a 10 year old boy.
however after reading the article,
the colombian government is not much better in regards to using children.
thanks for the links.

el gringo en bogota. well, you couldn't be even more wrong im afraid.
i've been living in south america since 1995.
i'm actually puro latino, casi chibchombian.

well as i said, i know a lot about what goes on,
i read the papers daily,
since i work with liturature all the time, its a big part of my proffesion, being marketing director of gatopardo.

the FMLN, FSLN, Zapatistas, Shining Path, etc were apart of my life long ago, in the sense i really believed that they were going to socail injustice.

the FARC have not always been criminals, and they have never been such the "evil" that people depict nowadays.
i think its difficult for you to comprehend how strong the propaganda machine is in colombia.
unless you have first hand experience.
i know more journalists than you have friends.
its incredible how much spin they are pressured to use.
i'm going to put some links to stories that are widely known to be false, demonizing the FARC is part of the state agenda.
if you can say such nonsense about me sympathizing with the FARC, i dont imagine that this will interest you.
you must understand that people deserve to hear the truth,
feeding people lies, results in having to deal with people like you.

i almost forgot,
you quoted me saying, "the farc dont go out of their way blowing up police stations"
show me where a single article where the farc has been responsible for blowing up a police station.
perhaps you didnt understand the point i was making,
the point was, that Policia Nacional are not targets,
ofcourse there are incidents with police(policemen)here and there,
but very rarely,
becuase in red zones there are no police, would be the first point,
due to the fact that the military are the acting police.
POINT MADE?
