Day Trips From Cali

For those like TripleAAA who would like to find (safe) things to do outside Cali contact Konny at Fundacion Eco-Aventura www.ecoaventuras.org/ [Correction, it's www.eco-aventura.org] They have day outings every weekend and three day trips further out on "puentes". Most involve some hiking and often swimming in a river but there is also para-gliding off the mountains bordering the city and scuba diving at Isla Gorgona. We've been to a number of cool destinations with them including El Nevado De Ruiz outside Manizales. Another group that does essentially the same thing with maybe more simple hiking is Picodeloro. Don't have their website handy but we did a nice rafting trip with them on Rio La Vieja in Quindio department.

El Nevado De Ruiz I understand that have been problems with rebels in this area plus increased sesmic activity around Nevado del Ruiz. Don't forget. When this baby cut lose in 1985 there were 25,000 people killed. Though I will say the surrounding countryside is some the most beautiful in Colombia.

Lago Calima is worth a trip as is Popayan and the Volcán Puracé in Parque Nacional Puracé, east of Popayán. Lots of lakes and hot springs at Pilimbalá, and the jumping off place for climbing the volcano. Also in that area is San Augustín archaeological site, which I found fascinating.

There are... regular tourist bus trips from Manizales to the Nevado. I haven't heard of guerrilla movements creating any problems but maybe there is something very recent I missed. In fact I've heard there are more problems with Parque Nacional Purace but I hope to visit.
