Medellin Traveler says on Oct 19, 2007, 18:55:

I STONGLY suggest you not stay at her place. You need to book a hotel room in an area that is the "safest" part of town.

You are "in love" and cannot trust your own actions and decisions at the moment.

Do some research on Bogota before you fly into town.

Trust others opinions and advice before your own.

Oh yeah, you are not dating a Colombian woman, at least not the one living in Colombia.

Good luck!

dave_travels says on Oct 19, 2007, 19:08:

She could be a good girl or she could be bad. Since you are new to travelling outside of North America, it will be easy for you to fall for this girl. Stay in a hotel until you get your feet wet. If you find yourself buying her girlfriend's dinner also on the first date...be aware!

A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. If you heart and mind say do it then do it and don't ask others for advice. It's your life. I also live in Bogotá now, before that Cali and a long time resident and am very happily married to Mrs. Gator who is a Caleña.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT RENT A CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! vERY EXPENSIVE AND IF YOU HAVE NOT DRIVING IN COLOMBIA YOU WILL HAVE AND EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE. iF YOU EVERY WONDERED WHERE THE PHRASE "TAKE NO PRISONERS" CAME FROM YOU WILL FIND OUT.

Taxis, public transport ion and buses are cheap and go every where..

I agree with the above , "Dont rent a car" Taxis are very cheap. Driving in Colombia is crazy. Nieve in some place is no big deal, Nieve in Colombia can get you killed. Don't go into this Nieve. your going to get some good advise on here, listen to alot of it.

Is the neighborhood she lives in El Virrey? Could be in the Chapinero are on the north end
The Mercado de las Flores (flower market) in the Parque El Virrey, just off calle 87.

Both good areas and upper middle class for the most part.

I think you going down there to meet her and spend time with her is wise - not crazy. The renting of the car, now that's crazy. I won't beat a dead horse on that issue, but like the above guys said, DON'T rent a car.

Before you go, I advise get a couple of small gifts for the family. Nothing fancy or expensive. Maybe some body lotion for mom, a little Tshirt for the son, a bottle of Scotch whisky for an adult male is always appreciated.

When you go with this lady to dinner, a big red flag is: If it is clear that it is a "date" for just you two, but all of a sudden a friend happens to show up and you are expected to pay for your date AND her friend or cousin (very common), beware. Also, no matter how much you may want to, DO NOT take your girl shopping or buy her anything other than dinner, or a cab fare. If she asks if you can buy her something; when you part ways that night, make that your final night with her. Can you imagine going out with a women in the US, and having her ask you to buy a pair of shoes, or a dress, whatever? Don't do it in Colombia ... it would even be worse.

Culipayaso- You very well might be right. On the chance this is real I hope what little advise I have given helps. On the chance your right the advise I give and the others on here give will be read by others that might be in the same boat but are afraid to ask questions on here because they will get blasted on here on many diffrent levels.

I've been there, done that. Going on 7-1/2 years of marriage to my Colombian wife. No regrets at all.
First visit is the most difficult because everything is new to you. You'll do fine, just trust your own instincts.
As for driving there, everytime I've been there it was a blast. Mind you I've only been to Baq, yet I find it fun to drive there. To me the drivers there are more predictable than locally in Calif.

with my family I have no time for friends......

I met my lovely Paisita on www.latinamericancupid.com and met my novias on www.myspace.com This is FREE, so you can meet as many as you want before heading down to Colombia.

I would say Latin Cupid is a good site with many members. I talked to about 100 girls before finding my lovely Paisita.

A. DO NOT RENT A CAR!

B. Forget about any type of lotion as gifts. To many it's a waste of money. I went to the dollar store and purchased key chains, coffee mugs, and coloring books all for under $18. All gifts where greatly appreciated. DO NOT CONFUSE GIFT GIVING WITH LOVE.

C. Find yourself a guide who speaks English. I believe someone on here posted their services before. I don't understand what you meant by "she decided it was okay for my friend to check out where she lives." YOU ARE A MAN!! YOU ARE THE BOSS! DO NOT act like a pansy American man. Act like a MAN! Treat her with respect but don't let her run the show. You are the one flying to another country to meet HER! Do not spoil her, she is not the most wonderful person in the world. Even though you may think that. We are all special and wonderful.

D. AGAIN, get your own hotel room! This is not an OPTION!

E. YOu have a few months before your planned trip. Get busy with the Espanol lessons. It's time for an all immersion crash course for you.

F. Do not spend every waking moment with her. Get out and explore on your own.

G. Don't forget your camera. Take lots of pictures.

H. TAKE IT SLOW!!

I.Trust your instincts. But make sure you are capable of keeping an open mind, put the "love" to the side."

GOOD LUCK!

well to answer the initial questions: yes you are crazy. and...yes there are some things you should be afraid of.

i'm not seated at the cynics table, but we're all a little crazy and we all do stupid things. I met a girl from Cali and five years of my life have disappeared - i was young, it was crazy and looking back on it, it was stupid...but it was, and continues to be one of the best things I've ever done.

be afraid of a lot of things, but don't be afraid to make a mistake, because life isn't straight forward.

i wish you all the best ;>)
