Dating a girl from Colombia

hello everyone my name is Jonathan I am 45 and live in the UK.This site is excellent and its often a little amusing reading some of the replies. Actually I find many replies refreshingly frank and direct !
I know little about Colombia other than what I read and as I dont trust much of what I read anyway its hard to know what is fact or accurate. The papers in the UK are so political these days and the media have far to much power. Anyway I seem to be going off at a tangent here !
My reason for writing is this, I have been in contact for a few months now with a girl who lives in Cali. I first would like to hear about other mens expeiences with dating Colombian girls, especially if they are from the UK. We plan to meet at easter allthough nothing is booked yet. People tell me what your slant is about feeling stuff or a girl you havent met ? I dont think I should be feeling as much without meeting her in person, or maybe its just the internet !! Anyway if things do work out as we both feel they will I would like her to visit the UK and would apperciate any advice on the best way to get a visa for her to visit.
Thanks for you time. Happy new year to everyone !!

One step at a time I am a Norte Americano, met a very beautiful Colombian lady, married her and now live in Colombia. My best friend where I live is from the UK. He found and married one of the many other beautiful Colombian ladies and he also prefers to live in Colombia rather than the UK or the USA.

But as for getting our lady a visa to visit you, my advice is to cross that bridge when you get to it. Actually my friend had his wife (then girlfriend) get a visa for Spain and they met there for a wonderful holiday.

Something to read since your lady is from Cali. This was written in the Cali paper.

Dating a girl from Colombia thanks JMCana for your time. I dont speak Spanish but will try to find if there is a link for an English version for that article. Online translation is very hit and miss.
Thats good advice of course about the visa. We havent met yet but may have a holiday in Cuba if things go well.
May I ask you what you do for a living in Colombia now you are there with your wife ?

Who knows? I am Colombian and have been married to my Texan husband for 10 years. We met in Colombia since he was stationed there with the AAF. One of my friends met a guy living in Denver on-line. She came over on a tourist visa after they had e-mailed and spoken on the phone for a couple of months. They are now married and living in Denver. They are happy but I think that they had some points in their favour:
They are close in age, only 2 to 3 years difference so they enjoy the same things. It worries me that you say "girl" when you are 45 yrs old.
She had lived and studied in the US before and other countries
She is well educated
She wanted to emigrate from Colombia
She had her share of heartbreak and wanted a relationship and a family
They were both ready for a committed relationship (although when it comes to marriage we should say that we are ready to be committed)
They fell in love with time which is a more realistic expectations on how a marriage can survive.
There were no overt economic interests to drive the relationship.

So it is probably not unusual for you to be feeling something but like every relationship it comes down to what are the bases and how committed both people are to make it work. If you are ready to retire then it is not as expensive to live in Cali in c/2 Bogota. As for the rest, some people are able to live under the radar and some are not. It is not entirely safe to live in Colombia if you are obviously not from there and do not speak the language. Colombia also has the highest unemployment rate in Latin America and one of the highest costs of living. Get to know here and see what she wants to do and what is a feasible economic alternative. Good luck.

hi Hi Colombiangirl,
Hope you and your family had a nice new year. Thanks for your insight.
My friend is 31 but of course alot younger than me but generally I think age is relative. I think of myself as a young 45 in fact I am not quite sure how 45 crept up on me ! My friend spent some years in America so I think if she wanted to stay purely on ecconimic grounds she would still be there. We have both been frank reguarding our perspective personal history. I know meeting someone on the internet is a minefield but I do believe there are some genuine people out as well as the players and gold goldiggers ! I am not ready to retire yet, I cant afford it anyway I enjoy working but latter on I would like to retire somewhere with a nice climate as many do here in the UK.
Thanks again for taking the trouble to post a reply.

This should be fun Ask to look at her passport,, be sure and do this after you set the wedding date !!!!!

You need to see it because ??? Ahh,, need it for the "paper work".

If you see:

3 months in spain
3 months in Aruba
3 months in Curazol
3 months in Bon Aire
6 months in Panama

Guess what you're in luck !!!! She is a prostitute and will probably be great in bed !!! That is if you can get past the "worn out" part.

PS:
If Brode can have a "perv carm" (or maybe a cleveage cam ?) then I can sure enough have a "COLA CAM" and it was working overtime yesterday !!! Sometimes I wonder how they can retrieve the cell phone fast enough to answer the call ?

María Elvira Bonilla is really on a tear! in that article in El Pais, JMCana.
I think she may have a point, but reading the direct translation is funny. You think she is one of those Neo Nazi Feminists (someone here occasionally refers to)? Or, is she just trying to bring some balance back into something that has become extreme?

and, thank you.

jonny45 says on Jan 1, 2007, 10:32:

er lol do you speak from personal experience Poco ??

JMCana says on Jan 2, 2007, 07:03:

Answer for Jonny45 To answer your question of what I do in Colombia, I am a writer which pretty much allows me to live anywhere.

About your comment of meeting someone on the internet is a minefield. You also need to look at it from the lady's perspective. A few years ago I researched and wrote an article on Internet international dating. The management of one of the major sites gave me the following information. 50% of the men are already married. 15% are old and looking for someone to take care of them. 30% have mental problems. Only 5% are actually legit and searching for true love. Do not despair, many of the people I interviewed for the article have kept in touch with me over the years and many have reported excellent success stories about finding the love of their life. There has also been communication from those where the marriage did not work out. I am trying now to put together a writing of what makes the relationships successful despite cultural differences. Honesty in and about everything seems to be the thing mentioned the most. Some have said that if you catch the other person in even one lie then it is time to walk away.

Now about your comment of going to Cuba. I would recommend to stay in Colombia. The country has many many beautiful and safe places. I am still discovering many of them. But have found all of them better than the small area of Cuba that is really good for tourists. The people on this blog site can probably recommend many wonderful places in Colombia and I will be glad to tell you of the few I have enjoyed.

gringolondinense says on Jan 2, 2007, 07:06:

poco how on earth did you see that cell phone? its very well embedded in her pompis. You must have good observational skills. Why not start your own cell phone holder website, with a subsection for building materials?

Thats funny! "3 months in spain

You forgot Costa Rica. Some of Colombia's best looking working girls are outside Colombia.

jonny45 says on Jan 3, 2007, 08:34:

thanks JMCana I think you raise a good point about the pitfalls running both ways. Thanks for the advice about Cuba, also works out much cheaper.
What sort of stuff do you write ?

JMCana says on Jan 3, 2007, 10:44:

Slice-of-life jonny45 - I write slice-of-life stuff, the things that happen in life for a brief amount of time. Like the loose bull chasing the boys around the parque principal, the job of the garbage collectors, what it is like to try and get a telephone in a small town in Colombia, the joy of a first Christmas present ever for a 9 year-old girl in Colombia.

I avoid the political arena, that stuff will kill you. :-)

Invest in a high quality inflatable doll: www.realdoll.com In the long run they are cheaper and more satisfying. The Monica Belluci model that I've got has impeccable workmanship and she never has a headache. I'm saving up for a Salma Hayek model and maybe a Penelope Cruz model if I can afford it.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Many times I see them talking and putting it back in the holder.

I'm trying to get a photo of a girl riding a moto, grabbing her holder to answer a call. I've seen this a few times but couldn't deploy the camera fast enough.

Thought this fad had died out but it is stronger than ever,, that,, or someone put the word out I was sad to see it finished,, Colombians are that way,, when they see someone sad they try to cheer them up.

Oh,, the latest fad seems to be TOE NAIL painting,, yep,, little designs,, I'll need to ask for the photos,, then again,, maybe not.

Hell! I thought you were the one manufacturing them! Can we get a 'custom-made model' to look just like our lady, while we are 'in waiting'??

and, thank you.

All of the "real dolls" are custom made to order. Check out the site and send them your requirements.

A Colombiana
... a special young paisita (non-pro) convinced me to come out of my shell. At Thaico, in Parque Lleras, she gave me a pep talk. She was born in Medellin and raised in Texas. She noticed that I understood spanish well and convinced me to become more of a part of the conversation. I told her that despite, two years of spanish and three years of latin in high school and countless relationships with many latinas, I just did not feel comfortable attempting to speak spanish. She persuaded me to try. I did & it worked. I made a few more friends. I even had the chance to see how jealous a Columbiana can be. You see, we met a group at Thaico & I befriended a gorgeous 'mona' that went to the University of Medellin. We talked, me in broken spanish and her in broken english. My boys & her girls decided to go to another club. I dont remember the name of it, but it was around the corner from Folio.... Anyway, once inside we were separated. And like a little kid, I decided to play with my new toy & started talking to another beautiful paisa. Not even ten minutes into my new conversation, the mona from Thaico was leading me away by the arm & she was not happy. I've been cursed-out in spanish before, I wish it was unfamiliar territory.
