I know it is a custom in Colombia for some people to date their cousins. I have an uncle married to a 1st cousin (they even have a child together) and I know 2 more uncles who have dated cousins in the past. I want to have your opinion on that and/or what your experience dating a cousin has been like?
Thanks. Jimmy. ;)

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jan 21, 2005, 16:05: really, colx? "A la prima se le arrima, a la hermana con mas gana" is a popular saying in Colombia. One of the girls I studied with in college in Colombia was married to her uncle. Not good, not healthy, but it happens. RecochanBoy says on Jan 21, 2005, 18:43: Not a custom but not unusual Hey ColX, I agree with you in that is not a "custom" but I would say it's not that unusual. I know of a couple cases within my own family tree where cousins dated, married and now have normal children. I point this out because of the old belief that breeding between cousins may produce birth defects in offspring (due to the mixing of closely-related genes or whatever) but in both of my relatives' cases, their children were born perfectly healthy. I personally think this belief is all about preventing close relatives to breed because genetic variety increases the survival odds of future populations.

Jojo says on Jan 23, 2005, 14:06: Cousins My grandparents were cousins. met when they were 15 and 17 and married 3 years later. Together till my grandfathers death when he was in his 70's. I have dated a cousin, wouldn't recommend it as it is embarrassing when you split up as you can't avoid them. It isn't jusy colombians... isn't Greta Satchi married to her cousin?
