Darien Gap - Books??

Hey anybody have any good books they can recommend on the Darien Gap (other than the Cloud Garden)? Let me know. Oh, English please and thanks :)

If a movie will do, Art of Travel is about a crossing of the Darien Gap. Not sure if there was a book.

Jonny, as makopp5 says there is no highway, but you can easily hop down the east coast via boats (and walking in some places) between Panama and Colombia. It's a great alternative route to enter or exit Colombia.

Cheers,
Terry

This book has interesting stuff on the Darien Gap, especially liked the description of where the Panamericana finnishes and restarts: in football fields!

The Panamericana: On the Road Through Mexico and Central America (Trails of the Unexpected) [Illustrated] (Paperback)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panamericana-Through-Central-America-Unexpecte...

Crossing the Darien Gap: A Daring Journey Through a Forbidding and Enchanting and Roadless Jungle That Is the Only Link by Land Between North America and South America

The Darien Gap: Travels in the Rainforest of Panama

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Darien-Gap-Travels-Rainforest-Panama/dp/155017...

Remember, the Scots tried to start an Empire out there! Too hot for most of them, they're all walking around in tshirts with 15 degrees.

Caledonia's Last Stand: In Search of the Lost Scots of Darien (Paperback)

Cool cool! Thanks so much people! There's another one I read, a journal of a guy's crossing and encounters with the indigenous, but I can't remember the name right now. I'll have to dig it out.

If you want to read online, go to http://www.advrider.com and search for Darien Gap.

That's an adventure motorcycle forum with people who ride just about everywhere -- including the Darien Gap.

I was asking in Bogota today about the Darien Gap and was told by a military officer that this is FARC territory. Let me know how you make out if you get through without becoming a hostage.

It's actually against Panamanian law to be in certain zones inside the Darien-this you will learn once you visit.

How many miles is this fascinating GAP between the end of the PanAmerican Highway in Panama and the start of the highway in another continent, in Colombia? I used to think about driving from the US all the way to the southern tip of South America. At that point, I thought the only stumbling block was making it out of Colombia alive, but later, after getting to know Colombia, and therefore realizing that was not big a deal, I found there was this one area that was not drivable. What a disappointment. Will there be a highway through there someday?

This is the one I read. I thought it was interesting if you're in to hearing about this guy's life and adventures. A bit slow at times though.

Ya, reading a couple comments posted above, I don't know if they're directed at me, I'm not looking to cross the Darien hahaha. I'm looking for reading material. I'm fascinated by the area.

makopp..." a friend of mine got kidnapped"

Serious? What happened? Would you share?

christo-dawg: I wondered the exact same thing..."will there be a highway through there at some point". I don't know if that's a highway I would want to take though. I can't imagine it being all that safe and wouldn't it just create easier access to Panama etc... for criminals?

and this is not about the Darien, however is a fantastic read about an Israeli and others who got lost in the jungle in the 70's. Great book - I think they are making a movie out of it.

I have but YEARS ago, on their And Justice for All tour. This should be good. I checked their set list so far and they seem to be mixing it up with old stuff.
