Just curious if anyone knows if there are any poisonous spiders that I need to look out for here in Cali. Yesterday, I killed something horrible in the back yard. It built a web between the bushes and had a body double the size of a big cucaracha. It was smooth and had a black and white color scheme with a long body. It was also very fast. In the States we have the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow as the main menaces but what about here in Cali. My wife had never seen one like this before. I smashed it with a shovel. Just curious.

I dont remember spiders like you mention in Cali at all. I remember all kind of insects some days after raining time. Just take a look for eggs or more spiders with an specialist.

Oh My God!!! That is a Colombian Death Spider-it is as deadly as the Copper Headed Water Rattler in the southern USA.

If this spider misses you on the first shot or you run it will follow you home then nail you when you come back out side. The say the death is like passing a hundred kidney stones the size of a walnut.

I've never heard of spider bite dangers in Cali but check out pictures of Phoneutria boliviensis on the web. Too bad you didn't get a photo of it before the smashing. There are tarantulas of different sizes but you probobly would have recognized it as such from the hairy body. They're pretty mild mannered unless you try to pick it up. There are scorpians but they too are easy going unless you touch them on the tail. The creatures that concern me the most are the centipedes. I've never been bit but I've seen two different species in my house. They have two fangs on the front of their head they use for injecting venom into prey. I've read that the venom is extremely painfull and doesn't respond to most pain killers. There was one death reported in Colombia last year attributed to a centipede bite. Don't confuse them with millipedes which are mostly innocuous. They have no fangs or way to bite you but some will exude an acid if you pick them up which can give skin a light burn and be nasty if you got it in your eye.

Colombia-in-the-tropics Why not contact the Zoo in Cali to ask them?

As any other place in the tropics, I know Colombia has it's share of creatures, both delightful and nasty (the place is one of the most biodiverse in the world after all).

If fear of a spider or snake or scorpion or poisonous frog keeps anyone from Colombia, then they may as well scratch off most other tropical locales from their travel list. For the record I have had close encounter with a nasty snake in Colombia...that is until someone hacked it up.

You missed the whole point of my rant... Dude clear the cob-webs from your brain. Start thinking with an extra dimension.. Stop assuming we are all from Winsconsin..(back to the whole dimension thing)

Hey Caligul-ass Are you from Wisconsin? What dimensions are you thinking of? I have a dimension for your mouth.

Posted on March 27, 2006

Thanks Gringo!!!! I am going to try to look it up. Is that really what the name is. If I find another one, I am going to send it to Caligul-ass so he can see if his rectal dimensions are big enough to provide a home for the White tail.

Be careful, be VERY careful. Spiders are rampant in Colombia and they inhabit every house, unless of course the house is sealed,, and that is NOT LIKELY in Colombia.

Ever see a pretty hard shelled spider?

I own my life to staying alert and spotting this menace before he got me.

Suggest wearing a condom to bed, unless you're curious about the amount of swelling that might occure.

This problem is prevalent in 3 world countries. Suggest NEVER letting the sheet TOUCH THE FLOOR,, keep it on top the bed. In the middle east this is a common practice, not only do they keep it on top of the bed but they wear it on their heads,, thus the name ??sheet heads?.

Thanks Poco "Sheetheads" are the only thing that make me angrier than D-heads(The PBH Nazi's that think they are Gods gift to all third world countries when the truth is that they are lame asses) like Caligulass. Maybe we can get together and fire him off to Saudi Arabia. I took a picture of the son of a bich that I killed. I will try to post it so that you can see what is left of it. How do I put pics on here?

That spider or a very similar one to that in the fuzzy photograph is quite common here in Florida, beautiful creatures. I had a pet green lynx spider but my wife squished it.
