Just curious if anyone knows if there are any poisonous spiders that I need to look out for here in Cali. Yesterday, I killed something horrible in the back yard. It built a web between the bushes and had a body double the size of a big cucaracha. It was smooth and had a black and white color scheme with a long body. It was also very fast. In the States we have the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow as the main menaces but what about here in Cali. My wife had never seen one like this before. I smashed it with a shovel. Just curious.

Atrevido says on Mar 27, 2006, 12:37: I've never heard of spider bite dangers in Cali but check out pictures of Phoneutria boliviensis on the web. Too bad you didn't get a photo of it before the smashing. There are tarantulas of different sizes but you probobly would have recognized it as such from the hairy body. They're pretty mild mannered unless you try to pick it up. There are scorpians but they too are easy going unless you touch them on the tail. The creatures that concern me the most are the centipedes. I've never been bit but I've seen two different species in my house. They have two fangs on the front of their head they use for injecting venom into prey. I've read that the venom is extremely painfull and doesn't respond to most pain killers. There was one death reported in Colombia last year attributed to a centipede bite. Don't confuse them with millipedes which are mostly innocuous. They have no fangs or way to bite you but some will exude an acid if you pick them up which can give skin a light burn and be nasty if you got it in your eye.

Cartagena Hooker says on Mar 27, 2006, 15:39: No Joke A friend of mine was bitten here in Cartagena in his sleep. It is unknown exactly which variety, but he passed out the next day and was in a coma on a respirator for four days. His arm turned black and was swollen like a baloon. You could see the bite marks on his hand where he was bitten. It happened in his apartment in front of the Plaza Bolivar.

poco says on Mar 28, 2006, 21:25: Be careful, be VERY careful. Spiders are rampant in Colombia and they inhabit every house, unless of course the house is sealed,, and that is NOT LIKELY in Colombia.
