Danger in Yopal?

Well I think it is spelled Yopal. That's the way it sounds anyway.

My wife owns a finca in Yopal and her mother is coming from Spain to meet her there.

At first she said I could go but then she talked to her aunt and she asked her if she wanted to be a widow.

Is Yopal really notorious for being dangerous? I've never heard of the place. All I know about it is that it takes about 6 hours by bus to get there from Bogota.

to be honest You shouldnt have any problem , alot of foreigners go there and work there ,with BP and the security is very good because of these people working there. So I dont understand why they would tell her that.

Yopal es Super Rico I have visited my girlfriend's family in Yopal 3 times over the last two years. Granted, I am always with her or her family, but we have never had any problems and I have not heard of any incidents there during this time. Downtown Yopal is quite safe and has a good police and military presence these days.

It's true they don't get many tourists there. As a gringo, I do get quite a few stares. When I'm walking around town, the girls in the shops stare and whisper alot. Actually, it makes you feel like a minor celebrity or something.

As for precautions, they apply more to travelling than being in Yopal. Do the obvious: when travelling, stay with those you know well, and (like any part of Colombia away from a big city) try not to travel too much outside of town in rural areas or away from the major routes. If you can afford it, fly on Aires (I think it's $250 RT, and only a 40 minute flight). But if you must take the bus, travel during the day. You'll feel more secure. Once you're there, the town itself is quite safe and the locals are friendly and casual and like to have a good time.

So, all in all, it's a wonderful town. Find some good Llano music (El Cholo!), eat some chiguiro, and go swimming in the river.

the foreigner that live there the foreigners that live there are in a secure compound, they are not allowed to wonder around yopal, there is strong present of the guerrilla and paras, my brother in law used to live there with my sister, he was drinking with a mate in one of "poshes places in yopal" in downtown where he was allowed sometimes and got kidnnaped, 15 month in the jungle he spent! I would not recommend to stay in a farm there, I wouldn't.
And my sister had an encounter with the paras at there, not a pleasant one.
The road from Villavicencio to Yopal it's an excellent road but it is dangerous, maybe some are lucky, Calipro you maybe lucky.who knows

At last, a voice of reason returns to PBH.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.
