Cyclists from 12 countries to compete in "Great Caracol Trail" of Medellin

BOGOTA, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- World and Olympic champions will be among the 70 cyclists from 12 countries to compete in the "Great Caracol Trail" during this weekend in Medellin, Colombia.

The competition will take place between Thursday and Saturday in the Martin Emilio Cochise Rodriguez velodrome of Medellin, capital of the province of Antioquia, 220km northwest from Bogota.

According to the organizers, the tournament will feature cyclist from Australia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Spain, Italy, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, the United States and "others that surely will arrive at last time".

Among the best is Argentine Walter Perez, who won a gold medal during the Beijing Olympic Games. He admitted he was not to be in good shape, but will try to be at the first places.

Also will compete is Argentine Juan Curuchet, winner of the Madison event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Other experts to compete are Jose Antonio Escuredo, Sergei Escobar and Oscar Sevilla from Spain. Sevilla has many months racing in Colombia so he affirmed that the altitude will not affect him.

Italians Roberto Chiappa and Vera Carrara, Australian Rochelle Gilmore, Venezuelans Angie Gonzalez and Karelia Machado, Colombians Santiago Botero, former individual world champion, Olympic medalist Maria Luisa Calle and under 23 champion Fabio Duarte who few days ago won the Varese World Cup in Italy, will also compete.

The "Great Caracol Trail" starts on Thursday.

Trial or Trail? imho with the topography Colombia would be a great place for a long race, but it sounds like this is confined to a velodrome? How boring!
