ATM cards work great -- Just watch out for the fees Bank of America charges a 3% fee on all international transactions. For security reasons, it may sound strange, i prefer to bring cash back and use my atm card on occasion.

ATM machines get broken into then the back informs you that your card will no longer work, then you have to order a new card and get a relative to send it to you. Fedex can be quite expensive.

Then when it comes time to pay your bills its a pain in the but to run to the atm machine every time.

I consider myself lucky since my job requires me to show my face in the usa every couple months, so bringing a little cash back to pay my bills is no big deal.

I have noticed a difference in the money exchanges in different cities. so no matter what the paper says its really the money exchanges you need to pay attention to.

US Dollars for pesos usually varies between 2,200 and 2,300 pesos per dollar. I have found that the shops in the centro commercial Hacienda Santa Barbara offer a good competition with each other.

**one note keep your bills crisp because on occaision some houses dont want to accept bills in poor quality. if this happens you can usually trade those bills at cash houses for a lower rate (usually not much of a difference)...just walk 10 feet to the next one.

If you put money into a colombian bank account the government may ask you to prove you already paid taxes on this money, and if you cant you can be forced to pay taxes here.
